We lost 3 more 12' tall trees over the winter... and a in ground Ficus last week... The litle buggers even started eating the bark all the way around the base... The Raptor people say that a pair of owls with a nest of babies can eat 50lbs of gophers and other rodents per year If they stay here, and dine... I don't care if they crap gopher guts all over the place... LOL fertilizer if you ask me! |

Not enough race fans here to post this in OFF TOPIC forum.... I don't ever miss watching/listening to the INDY 500. Since I was 6 years old,,my father always told me there were two times a year to never miss watching > INDY 500 race, and the World's Series. It was like a religion to him, passed down to me: My pick for today > Juan Montoya, driving for Penske ABC network > 11am ET |

Indy is an event. The Race is a small part of it. I still remember driving and riding in the Viper Pace Cars of '91 and '96. I still have the '91 Pace Car poster on the wall above my computer screen that Shel signed for me when I left the Cincinnati Zone. Got to drive the proposed Stealth pace cars on the track at speed for about 50 total laps during tire testing before the pressure to substitute the Viper. I sat in for Shelby that day! Road in the three '96 Vipers with the Pace Car driver in the rain the day they were delivered to the track. What fun at 140 MPH in the rain! Wonder about Indy, ask Larry Mayes sometime what fun it can be seeing it from the inside. |

Driving 140 on Indy oval, had to be a RUSH,,,,and in the rain > = That outside wall must look intimidating, especially Turn #1, at those speeds. I attended the race in 1968,,,inside track grandstand tickets, about 50-75 yards from the finish line. I truly enjoyed the experience, but figured out that watching on tv with video replays and total track coverage, was the best ticket. I'd give my right testicle to drive the track for 50 laps,,,in any thing that is fast! Thanks for the info ...... |

The bigger rush was riding with Shelby 11 months after his heart transplant. The ride in '96 in the rain was really uneventful until one car ran low on gas and started missing in the corners. The actual pace car driver was a really good driver, much better than Shelby was at that point. When I was driving I really didn't want to leave any yellow stripes on the wall. Going into Turn One at 120 MPH for the first time and having the rear suspension on the four wheel steering take a set about necessitated a change of underwear. After I realized what was happening I was able to run two or three laps sprints with lap averages well over 135 MPH. Thought that I was hot $hit until I realized that the Indy cars were running 85 MPH faster than I was running and 85 MPH is fast. If you ever get the chance, ask Larry Mayes about his impressions regarding our visit to the track and Museum after having breakfast at Charlie Brown's in Speedway. |
