Project prowler Srt-8 6.1 V8 story and blog

I have been a proud prowler owner for over 10 years. I absolutely love the car it's style, the thumbs up and overall design. To this day there isn't another car that I see that looks so good and is so unique.

Being just a weekend car I have always   Wanted to keep the thrill of good looks with the power to match and its the only thing that has fell short to me over time.
Every article says it should have had a v8 but it's still the best.

I added gears, intake, headers and still always wanted a bit more.
After that started drag racing for fun and everyone loved the ride but always fell short on 3rs and 4th gear but still fun

And even did a road course track day at Englishtown raceway in NJ.

The biggest moment was a dyno day in flordia with a car club everyone was so excited about the prowler and even with all my mods only scored 196 hp to the wheels which I felt a bit down vs the other cars everyday cars pushing closer to 300hp,
Prowler dyno video:

Since this time started exploring all options to put power into the Kat from Twin turbos, to superchargers to 4.2 strokers to the dream 5.0. I had a chance to ride with Ed in FL and it changed my view of Prowler power for ever.
Prolwer Pro 5.0 Video http://www.youtube.com/user/Treyb1#p/a/u/1/cf7ZZKykfJ8

Then After many years of review decided to go with the second big boy hemi 6.1 srt V8 conversion with performance innovations.

See the details of number 1 here
http://per4manceinnovations.com/projects/1999-plymouth-prowler-hemi-conver sion-swap-upgrade-6-1-srt/

There is no replacement for displacement the Srt-8 packs
425hp at 6000rpm. 420 ft lb torque at 4800 in car that will be over 1400 lbs lighter than its brother challenger or charger. A big decision that kicked of in october. Rather than keep it a big secret I decided to share the process with my fellow prowler friends.

In the words of one of favorite shows growing up! Autobots transform!! Let the story begin

Just after a few weeks of talking to Brendan from performance innovations out of NC and hearing his passion for the project got on uship.com and scheduled a private hailer to take the Kat from NJ to NC for a long winters nap.

There a thing about trust and taking risk is always there especially when you love your car, it being a low production vehicle, think its special, always had your car with you close by and doing a very customized project. But after talking with so many different people (fellow owners , shops, mechanics, reading articles posts, etc and hearing his personal experience with tons of other and jeep conversions, custom projects, prowler # 1and getting the Trans, electronics and motor in right it was a done deal and decided to pull the trigger.

Car arrives project srt underway

Quote From perf innovations shop blog:
Pictured in the foreground is our newest Plymouth Prowler Hemi conversion project. This is a 1999 Plymouth Prowler from New Jersey, getting a 6.1 SRT8 Hemi crate engine, custom upgraded trans-axle, custom stainless-steel headers and exhaust, custom radiator and wiring harness.

Last picture the car in its current form

Car goes up for inspection and project kick off and prep

Mid Nov 2011 updates
New 6,1 crate hemi engine arrives thanks to the chrysler SRT team for such a great engine! Just looks a bit different that the 3.5!! :-) Mean!!

Prowler V6 is now removed and perf innovations is prepping the car for fitting and getting her ready

A number of parts went up for sale, looks like a number of key items will be headed to Texas and possibly over seas to fellow owners in the UK and Australia.

When is the new baby due? Keep us updated on the progress.
You won't be able to wait for Spring to get here once that baby is completed.

No rush spring is target still have the 69 Camaro to play with when it's nice.
2 more initial benchmark videos.

This is me in the 3.5 V6 prowler with performance gears vs 2 different v-8 6.1 hemi srt-8 Cars. In both cases with the prowlers low weight and aluminum build makes the car 1400 lbs lighter than its peers. Off the line the and short distance prowler can keep up with most cars.

Imagine the same 6.1 srt-8 motor in the
Prowler. The goal is to equalize the delivery across the power band while still being able to enjoy everyday driving since this motor really is a stock high performance engine used in many daily drivers in the line up.

Very cool story Trey, and a great write-up. I'm very interested in this, as I have about run out of things to do to my Cat. I'm almost 138,000 miles on the car, and pushing 55,000 on the 5.0. When the time is right I'll have a new paint job put on it. At that time I'll look at what else I need to do for the next 100,000 miles. I like the idea of a possible hemi in it one day.

Keep us in the loop with your extensive descriptions and pictures. Again, you owe me a ride! Can't wait. Great project Trey...

I personally don't have that need for speed but can appreciate your interest in being a true hot rod enthusiast. Good luck on your project and don't always lift the hood and tell them is is a hot V6.

From what I understand The hemi motor weighs about 80lbs more than the v6. That's like having a young person on the front seat and should operate just fine with the stock suspension.

That's sounds about right as I was told several years ago the weight difference between a Hemi and the stock Prowler V6 with a supercharger kit was less than 20 pounds.

Mr 3.5 v6 prowler engine, you have been a great friend for over 10 years, never let me down and it's been a fun ride.

Your big big brother is on his way in, and you will always be remembered thanks for the great memories!!!

11/17 update
The V6 is all crated up and on its way for a long over seas voyage, sold to a fellow Prowler owner in Austraila.
No turning back now!!
Also picked up a nice new grill from a fellow owner should add a nice touch.

spanish prowler, what is the problem with your PM? I have had problems in the past and usually if you update your browser to the latest one it should fix it. If you are only running one browser try another one. I run about 4 on my computer and every now and then I can't get one to do it's job so I open the webpage in another one. I am currently running Safari 5.1.1 (7534.51.22) you can download it here.

No real rush lets say it's a winter project.
They are all already doing engine drop in's and fittings On the hemi. Will continue to post updates at key milestones.
Also planning on a good amount of road and possible track testing locally in NC before bringing it back north. Still have the 69 Camaro if we get a nice day and need to play around.

Trey

the people doing this, have they done any other Prowlers?

Talked to others that have?

Think they can take care of the issues that others have?

Are they modifiying Transaxle?

This is a mod I would like to have done, maybe someday.

Larry yes to all of the above. They started by doing a good number of hemi jeep conversions, completed another 6.1 srt prowler and have also supplied trans and related parts for other 5.7 prowler conversions done at some other shops. Brendon is pretty knowledable it takes alot of work, time and experience to convert a prowler (electronics, engine, trans and everything else.

Here a website link and prowler #1 feel free to shoot me a pm or give the shop a ring.

Also see the contact and customer rides tabs http://per4manceinnovations.com/projects/1999-plymouth-prowler-hemi-conver sion-swap-upgrade-6-1-srt/
