Jan 2013

Over a year ago had a dream. Took a big risk to do something that has never been done before with a car I loved for over 12 years. If you have been following this blog its has been over 14 months of custom work, testing and tuning which I hope may just come to a close next week.

Since my last post have done a ton or testing and tuning modification and updates to get the hemi cat in top driving condition. Our goal from the start was build a car that wasn't just for car shows and trailers but one that we could actually drive and actually enjoy.

The reality is each part of the build is custom. There is no manual and everything that you change and modify especially in a custom build so major effects a many parts of the cars original design.

There is a reason why this car came with A V6. The power delivery of a hemi is a lot on the car especially the tranny and with such much power and torque on the original Trans no matter what you do it will have its limits.

See tranny story below http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/004650.html

With the 42LE prowler trans we have done everything possible to make it as strong as possible to support the 6.1 Hemi over 430hp and 425 Ft lb. of torque but the reality is no manner what anyone tells you its not made to handle it and the car will be a great car for the street but not a drag track king!

Trans
As share prior we have maxed every available option of the current design including
- 2 upgrade kits, extra clutches, race car hardened internals, completely rebuilt the unit, even switched out the prowler valve body and solenoid packs.

As of this week and over 400 shop road miles with all of the updates and changes the shop did a internal re check and everything still looks as good as new!!

I will personally look to put about 400 miles of personal testing next week to put a stamp on it but everything is looking and feeling great!!!

After a good 14 months of planning, working, testing, tweaking, trial and error with the Performance innovations crew if all goes as planned I will feel a bit like this moment again from Nationals!
Living a dream!

Trey, your car looks great and always has looked really good. Now you have one of the very few, very fast Prowlers in existence.
I hope the drive line holds up for many years and you get tons of enjoyment from the car.
You did take a huge gamble and hopefully it will continue to pay dividends for a long time.
Congrats, it sure looks like a winner.

Sir real I will cruise with you. At this stage I would be more than happy to be able to reliably make a trip down 95 and hang out the with East coast posse. Ed you hit it on the money. You were here in NYC at one of my last events Driving it and one of the first folks to hear of the " crazy concept". It shipped out about 1.5 months later. There is a big difference between show cars and drivers cars, I'm hoping for more of the second but will need to think and plan out things a bit more on what it can and cannot do real world reliably with so many modifications. It's Hard enough to find a good tech for a base prowler better yet a one off custom.

Though most of the parts are brand new oem mopar outside of the hand built stuff its not like we can just pull up to any neighborhood garage with so many unquie things going on!
The simple fact that there is 2 computer plugs (hemi and prowler) under the dash may throw a few people off. :-)

All part of the risk /reward and true hollywood story of such a project.
This one wasn't kept a secret or just a few pretty pictures. It a fun play by play and thanks all for the support.

Cooling the beast 101

For many prowler owners especially those that live in hot areas most know that overheating can even happen in stock cars.

Now take in consideration the engineering challenge of putting a motor double the size that actually runs hotter by design in the same bay.

Every Mod on the hemi prowler is functional and planned. TGF side panels and even the open vertical grill have an air flow purpose.
Yes that big shaker in black that is questioned by some is designed to take and deliver the coldest air possible without restriction to the engine!

The 6.1 hemi engine is designed for a SRT challenger or charger with an engine bay 40-50% larger than a prowler with a huge radiator, air box and long / wide grill design and vent ducks

Hemi challenger bay with AFR shaker

Same motor smaller car see any difference?

The car has been running for over 4-5 months but with every tweak you make it involve try, test, tune modify.

Just to provide some perspective we must have been through 2 or more hand built radiator cores, custom tubing, brackets, a/c condensers (stock/custom) 3-4 different thermostats, 4 or more different fans (size, shape, power) and much more designed to best optimize airflow and cooling with the prowler layout.

I now totally get the name "performance innovations" http://per4manceinnovations.com/blog/

Car ran well but with extended drive testing on hot days temps started to climb into warning zones.

As shared We a have real time performance monitoring system on the car.

Trey, did you ever try running without a grill just to see if there is any difference? I think that grill, even though it has vertical fins may be 20% more restrictive than say a grace grill.

Beachkat all signs from the shop and road testing completed of the upgraded enclosed system design shows we got it covered. I will be back down next week to do some additional long haul highway test miles along the beautiful carolina coast.

Rather than a bunch of words will just show the cooling system evolution and versions. Remember there is no manual you try, test, tune, modify

1.Prowler performance owners have been using larger radiators for years including 5.0s etc. The company that made many of them stopped so the shop built our own

2. The First 6.1 built did not have a/c based on space and flow but wanted to give it a try for mine which increased the complexity of the overall build. From hemi compressor to dash / gage control integration etc. We started with the OEM prowler condenser

stock fan on the back was way too small and not enough room for a hemi

Ended up removing and going with large fan up front pushing air based on space

To try to keep the a/c the team built a custom remote a/c condenser In the grill

Still space was limited and restricted airflow. So removed and kept open. We also came up with a custom t-stat set up that maximizes the flow of Evans coolent.

Worked but on long haul hot days still kept creeping. After alot of research the key needed was to get back to more of an OEM design, but with less space and more powerful fans located on the back of the radiator blowing towards the engine vs the front pushing in which natural air flow could be canceled. we also needed to insure no restriction from the grill to the radiator.

The team went to work and created a brand new system. Including a new thinner core, hand welded to exact specs. It utilizes 2 low profile high powered 10" fans that each push 805 CFM, so combined it will be over 1600cfm, the old fan was 1200cfm on the front.

Everything was designed to fit perfectly as well as we shrouded the back if the core around the fans as shown to create more surface pressure and pull across the entire rear surface.

Here is a quick snap shot of the new unit in development. The net of all of this and much more is the new system that has running great!

Trial, patience, design and engineering.
Just a taste of the work, effort and dedication it takes for a one of custom. Stay tuned for more fun, Real vids and pictures next week.

Feel free to Check in and like at www.facebook.com/hemiprowler for more details will just keep the big milestones and updates on here.

Well over 400 miles and still Hemi Prowling! Early morning cruise to
Southport, NC before flying back to NJ/NYC later!

Real life mpg somewhere around 13-16 mpg avg with mixed highway etc
This is a typical real life reading I was seeing

Real time gage reading typically seen on the hemi prowler
Showing 15.4 mpg, at 1684 rpms,
temps At 204 (on the money and cool)
Soft HP at this time just cruising around town for this pict
But have seen in 350-375 plus range when pushing it!

Hello Trey, really enjoyed your story and I have been to all the you tube videos.

A thought ocured to me on my way to work, would it not be neat for Chrysler to offer a way of upgrading our cars at the Conner plant? What a great way to serve the Prowler community and get great publicity. Maybe you could speak to yur new friend Ralph and mention it?

Happykat Conner ave is packed with vipers right now but you can get one if you have the time, money and patience that it takes to make one. As you can see it took us about 14 months. But my builder http://per4manceinnovations.com/blog/
if you choose to use them after doing 2-3 already and making parts for other cars has the process down well now and could be much easier for the next person if interested.

Few facts: this is a custom car not a kit- many parts are hand built from scratch to make it work. There is a ton of time and effort needed to do it so its an investment both for you and the builder if you choose to do it.
Nothing on the prowler is cheap especially major power upgrades. Do your research make sure your very serious if you want to do it the end product is awesome!!

When the average person goes to a car show or looks at us flying down the road in this custom 6.1 hemi Prowler what they see this

There reality is as you can see from this post its a major build and the majority of the effort and time it took to get this cool, fast and powerful end product looked more like this

Feel free to Pm me and I can share with you much more and the options out there if interested. Thanks again for your comments and support! This post is a true hollywood story and the real deal. At the end its a dream come true and the result is well worth the time, money and wait in gold better yet platinum!!!
