Ok, need some big help here. Over the past year, when I take the prowler for a drive there has been an issue. I can be simply driving along and the cars engine appears to cut out for a split second and then carry on. You can feel and hear it cut and then re start immediately. I took it out about two weeks ago and drove a few hundred yards and it quit and didn't re start. I let it coast to a halt and tried a re start, all normal dash lights came on, the engine turned over but would not fire. I left the car and walked home. I came back to the car about an hour later and tried to start it and it was on the button as if all was well. I drove it home. I looked at the wiring harness under the side panels and relieved the tightness there as per catfish posts. I now find myself with a car that is unreliable to go anywhere. Please help, what can it be, it sounds electrical. Up until recently I had a car that I would trust to take me anywhere, now that has gone. |

That happened to my once. It was my fuel pump. Normally, it just gave hard starts when hot, with an occasional cut out, but the one time it did exactly what yours did. For me it was in a hard rain so there was no getting out and walking. I had gone just a couple blocks and it died and wouldn't start. I called a wrecker and waited. An hour later, I got it going before the wrecker got there. Go with the neon SRT fuel pump rebuild kit for a replacement. Til then, go easy on the gas when driving it if it starts cutting out. I find that helps (some). This message has been edited by idive on 06-04-2013 at 04:33 PM |

Thank you for your input. The car doesn't cough or splutter, simply cuts out. I guess it could be fuel related. WS yours the actual pump itself failing and not a relay etc? I did see a post by John Collins about a pump rebuild. On a seperate note could anyone here supply or send me a pump or kit to the UK? |

Yes mine was the pump. I have 2 97's, so I could swap out relays, etc. to test. Fuel pump relay was fine. ASD relay was fine. Dealer diagnosed it as the fuel pump by further eliminating other possible failures. I'm not a certified mechanic and hope I'm not directing you in the wrong direction. All I can state is what happened in my case. You might see if APE (Auto Performance Engineering in Dallas area 972-530-8729 or toll free 866-383-5786 - may not be toll free from the UK) will send the kit GCA761 to you. If not, I'm sure someone will jump in if needed. It also happened to me another time. Went on a cruise. Ran fine. Stopped to get gas and drove it about 200 feet and it died and wouldn't start. Parked it and finished the cruise as a rider. After the cruise we went back to get my car and it started right up and ran fine all the way home. It was not from getting bad gas. On the way to Tulsa, Dale Beamans car quit I believe right after we stopped for fuel. I thought, why didn't he pee at gas station instead of a portapot on the interstate in a construction zone. Well we unloaded my car from my car hauler, I backed down a very restricted, busy interstate, pulled Dales car up to my trailer and loaded it. Sue drove our car on into Tulsa and Dale and I took his car to dealer in Tulsa. Next day car started fine and they found no issue. He drove it for the entire trip and home without any other problems. We all suspected the fuel pump. Don't remember if he ever changed it when he got home. Didn't happen to buy a silver cat out of Kentucky did you? |

One trick for a fuel pump is to thump the gas tank, sometimes that will make the pump start running again so I am told. How can you do this on a Prowler? |

Thank you for all your replies gentlemen. I don't have a reputable dealer near me. So I have to rely on you and an ace friend who is a mechanic and knows his stuff. My trouble is pinning him down as he is so busy. Ed, I will contact you soon as when my man has had a look I may be calling on you for a delivery to the UK as I know you are THE man where this is concerned. I had to take my Chrysler 300c to the dealer as that decided to show me a TPMS problem on the EVIC. As soon as the engine was started this showed and the engine would cut. It wouldn't start at all for several minutes. The dealer said 11 fault codes showed upon plugging in. They thought it was a chaffed wire under the front bumper. They wanted the car for 3 hours at $130 an hour. They didn't seem too sure so I now have two cars that are unreliable. I feel like leaving them dumped somewhere.....and it happened on the same day, Prowler played up and 300c. |

Well I got the 300c fixed today. I took a punt and bought and fitted two new TPMS receivers. These are located in front of the wheels under the splash guards. All EVIC codes have gone and car starts every time. I have ordered an OBD 11 reader today and hope I can pull a code to see what is up with my prowler. At least I have fallen back in love with my 300c. I now need the mistress back... |

Do a search on the code with Google. You can find what each code means that way. |

Code p1489 High speed fan control circuit. Right new info fellas. I cleared codes. Started car which was cold. Let it idle on the drive. The water temp gauge was on about a third from the bottom. The car simply died. I plugged in the reader and it is now only showing the above code. |

Went out about 5 mins after the engine quit and it started right up. Let it idle. Fan came on with no problems. Let it idle and it quit again. Plugged in the reader and no codes show at all. Just don't know what's the matter. Need to start from scratch again. |

from what you say and the previuos codes you have a bad coolant temp sennsor.replace it,you asked for advise take it.a bad coolant sensor will cause the problem youre having.the engine starts up and gets to not, but the sensor being bad keeps telling the engine its a cold start when its not, change the sensor,is yours a 99 or up or a 97.97 is a easy change ,99 and up much harder to change.a bad coolant temp sensor will not set a code.the temp gauge not going to- not- tells you the sensor is bad.----not is normal operating temp. ------------------ |

Thanks Jan for all your time with me on this. Mine is a 99. I will order a coolant sensor . Do you have a part number for this component at all? I will have to order from the states I guess as the dealers here are hopeless. |

Small news on this topic. Had the friend of mine look at the car today. Fuel pump is working great and holds pressure. He narrowed it down to the ASD relay. Swapped it over with the horn relay and took it for a drive with all being ok. He isn't sure the relay is the issue though. Has told me to make a fly lead with a fuse from the battery post to the coil. He said if it did stop again, this would get me home. He suspects an issue in the loom from the relay box to the coil packs. If it does happen again we may need to look through that loom on the bulkhead. So my question is has anyone else had issues with their relays? This message has been edited by Dave Haggas on 07-05-2013 at 03:10 PM |

no relay issues that i know of.wire loom problems yes many.ck complete loom from where it comes out of firewall, possible cut or squashed wire,or wires.in many places wire loom is wire tied to tight against body.cut the old ties loose,ck. loom and retie loosely,a problem with loom will cause many diff.codes and codes that dont exist.ck wires going to computer behind rt side panel also.there in a bind there also. ------------------ This message has been edited by catfish on 07-05-2013 at 03:51 PM |

Thanks Jan. I will have another good look soon. At the very least it has been narrowed down now. I did as you said behind each side panel and yes the loom was very tight against the frame but no visible cuts. The loom that sits along the firewall that is behind the engine has a big multi plug. This is a suspect area also, ie any small corrosion etc. I will be disconnecting and looking closely. Also will warm with a hair dryer in case of dampness. Perfect summer weather here for that also. I also need a part number for said relay. Would you know if all those relays in a line are the same part number? |

I'm having similar problem. My car cuts out for a split second, then back to normal. I pulled the codes. Do any of these codes look like we have the same problem, or is mine totally different? It started out doing it once a trip or so, but it got more frequent yesterday. No problem starting - hot or cold. Only the cut-outs when I'm rolling. Codes from website http://www.allpar.com/fix/computer-codes.html : P0174 Fuel Trim System Lean Bank 2 P1494 Leak Detection Pump Switch or Mechanical Fault P0303 Cylinder misfire detected P1243 Injector Circuit Cylinder 8 Intermittent P1289 There's a problem in the manifold tuning valve solenoid control circuit. |
