Thumping on the tank reminds me of the time I owned a Jaguar XK120 and the fuel pump was under the floor on the passenger side. When the pump quit, I bumped the floor board and continued my journey. Points would stick.

I have owned 7 XK120 & XK140s MC type Roadsters, fixed head coupes, my most favorite & fun cars I've owned besides my Prowlers. I was buying them up in the late 60s & 70s for almost nothing, boy do I wish I had them now. the 140s were a much stronger car than the 120s.

It was a common occurrence in Ford Crown Vics for the fuel pump to stick and they would thump on the gas tank to "fix" it.

Got the car back from RPM on Friday. They found a loose fitting: "The technician found a fitting to be loose at the EGR tube to the back of the intake manifold"

They tightened it up and smoke tested the system - no leaks. They drove the car. No misses.

I drove it for about 3 hours after pickup. One small, quick miss, and that was it. Drove it later in the evening for another 2-3 hours. No misses.

Drove it yesterday, and it started missing more frequently. Driving in traffic, it cut-out dramatically a few times while accelerating. (Never did it this as often, and in such quick succession, before. I decided to take it home.

Codes from website http://www.allpar.com/fix/computer-codes.html:

P0340 Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor Circuit (FIRST TIME FOR THIS CODE)

P0174 Fuel Trim System Lean Bank 2

P1494 Leak Detection Pump Switch or Mechanical Fault

P0303 Cylinder misfire detected

P1243 Injector Circuit Cylinder 8 Intermittent

P1289 There's a problem in the manifold tuning valve solenoid control circuit.

It is not bad gas. Again, only happens when driving. Never has stalled. Always starts instantly hot or cold. Back to the drawing board.

Ed
I had a similar problem and it was the cam position sensor.
Their are two of them and can be replaced very easily. They are not very expensive; but use only the OEM ones. I tried non OEM ones and they do not last. It's worth a try and you can do it yourself. I would replace the front one first.

Gas problem is a one in a million situation, but does happen. More likely since the introduction of ethanol blend.

Familiar with the terminal situation with Exxon in the Baton Rouge market. Major topic at an Exxon distributor council meeting I was at in New Orleans 4/22 & 4/23.

I put a new front sensor in it Randy, and it ran PERFECTLY for about four hours. Then, it started missing even more radically than before. Still working on the problem. Thanks for the feedback.

Start your engine and do a tap test around the plenum & the trottle body, it can be very interesting..

Update. I got my PCM back. They can't repair it. I put it back into my Cat.

Just before I pulled it to have it diagnosed, something new happened. I turned the key on to start it, but NOTHING happened. No sound. Nothing.

After I reinstalled it yesterday to check it out, the same thing happens. EVERYTHING works normal when I turn the key to the on position. Battery is fully charged. All instruments, lights, etc., fire up and look normal. If I turn the key to START, nothing happens. I checked the fuses by the driver side door. They are all OK, as I suspected.

Is this just the final step of a failing PCM? Or, is there something else going on? I hope it is the PCM, as I will at least know where the problem is. Ideas???
