Can they flash the PCM without my Prowler in the shop?

WELL...it goes into Chrysler dealer on Wednesday afternoon the 9th of Sept.
The service guy wants to diagnose it before I hand over $750.00 for a new PCM.
I'm 99% sure it's the PCM, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to check it out.
It will take about 2-3 days to have the new PCM shipped to the dealer.
They won't let me purchase it on my own.
They also said they can't flash it on the bench and let me reinstall it in my garage.
It all has to be done at the dealership.

The PCM is dying a SLOW death!...lol.
Check out the RPM fluctuation at idle.

Also, the engine RPM doesn't coincide with the cars speed anymore.
At 70 MPH the RPM was approximately 2,200 now it's about 2,800.

Tach fluctuation

The 97 Engine Crank signal is used a little different than the 99-newer Prowlers.
The tach is operated by the BCM which receives a message on the Communication Bus from the PCM telling it what the engine RPM needs to be displayed.

The engine RPM can also be read from the PCM and also the TCM. In 97 both PCM and TCM use the engine Crank Position Sensor. ( not so in 1999 on )

I'd suggest the mechanic reads engine RPM live data from TCM and PCM before swapping PCM. This may help diagnose the problem.

Now - we did have a 97 that also would stutter and/or quit when driving. Replacing PCM appeared to fix it.

Tony, I'm sure you got quite an education when you put the HEMI in your yellow Prowler.

The way I see it things fall into two categories.

1. The physical fit.

2. The electrical and electronic part, making things communicate.

This RPM fluctuation just recently started happening, after a sizeable engine cough/stutter.

I will pass on this info to the mechanic on Wednesday.

Thanks once again Tony for your priceless feedback.

WELL...the PCM is bad.

($750.00 for a new one + $150.00 to install/flash)

Now I have to find the time to bring it back in to have it replaced.
It'll take only a few days to have it shipped to the dealership.
I have replaced EVERY sensor that the PCM looks at, so I knew that's what it had to be.
It's good to know for sure what it is.

I found them to be extremely helpful.
MORE customer friendly than one of the other NH Chrysler dealerships, who I will leave nameless.

Good to know. The one near my house I would not bring my Reliant K.
