A couple things; 1. I also noticed the under cut....but that MAY facilitate a larger retaining collar to keep the ball in the joint...more surface area. 2. What is the name of the metal that original is made of? The silver/whitish look mimics aluminum but I know it isn’t...obviously a rustproof treatment? 3. The new ball appears to be a different metal ...maybe harder so it won’t “break”....will it rust? 4. Was the snap-ring installed ? This message has been edited by mslc10 on 10-02-2018 at 09:06 PM |

The snap ring was NOT installed and I don't know why. I will ask that question tomorrow. Glen also wants to know about that, to determine if they will continue to furnish them in the kit. I have no idea about the rest of your questions. Also, they did not measure how much force was needed to install the new ball joint. They were using hand tools so I have no idea how you measure how much force. |

The snap ring prevents the ball joint from pushing back out of the arm in the event it would loosen. Strange that got left off. |

Years ago when the original BJ's started failing it wasn't because of week stems. It was because of boot failures that allowed outside atmosphere(road dirt), inside the boot and created an abrasive atmosphere. The ball on the end of the stem rotating within the housing under a strained condition along with our aggressive suspension finally got so strained, metal fatigue set in and finally snapped at the weakest point,......the ball. Yes, they made the stem bigger on the recall BJ's but that didn't correct the original problem which was boot failure. As more time went by we've seen the recall BJ's fail. Not sure how many of those had torn boots that might have contributed to failures but there's been several that have had the stem pull right out of the housing(without torn boots), due to clearance that the ball has pounded into the retaining portion of the housing. And it would make sense that there's some kind of metal to metal contact that starts this grinding process leading to failures. Hopefully these replacements will end these problems. Not going to correct our aggressive suspension and how it effects our ride but we have two things so far the should make a huge difference. Being able to grease them and have boot material that won't break down like the originals. |

Talked to Ernie, he said they decided the snap ring probably would not fit due to the way something was machined and I THINK he said the rubber boot would be rolling over, but I am not positive as to that is what he meant. He was swamped and I didn't want to keep him. I am just thankful we have a viable option if the front wheel falls off. You can now buy a part. Thanks again Cat-a-Tonic for spearheading this. Great job and thanks to Rare Parts. Now I don't worry about having a piece of art in my garage. |

Thanks Ed!! Now I'm a slight bit confused regarding the installation. You said the snap ring was not used. The snap ring was to hold the boot on right? If not used then what's securing the boot in place? Or was it determined that the pressure of it once torqued in place was all that was needed? And did the snap ring not work because of the outside tab holes for the snap ring wrench once in place, would have interfered with the sides of the a-arm hole being pulled into the a-arm from the bottom? The washer provided was supposed to go under the castle nut so when applying torque to the castle nut you wouldn't be tightening the steel nut into the aluminum surface of the knuckle. Let me know if you think some clarification from Glen is needed. Want to make sure were all on the same page from the git go and not assuming something that might be incorrect. |

They installed the regular washer. They did not install the snap washer. From the top down. Castle nut with cotter pin through it. Next is the regular washer. Next is the spindle(?). I THINK that is the name of that large part. Then the boot, then the a-arm with the ball joint being on the bottom, other than the grease fitting. The boot is between two very large parts so it will not go up or down. It could rip, of course. I hope that clears it up somewhat. Let me know if it doesn't. It is hard to get a good pic that is in focus. I will try to get some in the next few days but I am playing golf both days so I don't know how that will work out.

Observation, The old nut was a poly lock. McMaster Carr has Poly Locks in fine thread stainless steel 10 for $10. I'm guessing its 1/2"-20 thread? |

OK......couple of items. The snap ring is not necessary. It was included just in case it might have been. When Rare Parts has these available for us the snap ring won't be included. The Boot!!...The boot does not need a retaining ring to stay in place. In pushes on and fits into a groove on the housing. Once it's compressed, not going anywhere. Greasing the ball joint. This won't be something that will have to be done very often. It's not an environment you want to keep filling and wait until it's squirting out the sides of the boot or any place else. One must keep in mind that your filling a TINY cavity so a couple of pumps(maybe less) is all that will probably ever be needed. |

MDProwler.......Poly locks will no longer be used in this application. What we can do is cover the castle nut with that chrome cap that was posted some time back. |

Okay, you can now Pre-order for a 25 % discount until the end of the month. It might be a good idea to order a set to set aside for the future. "As Ed’s pictures show, these are a really straight forward install. The only loose components with the ball joint will be the washer, grease fitting, castle nut and cotter pin. We are expecting to get some of these out of production hopefully mid to end of the month. You can email me directly, Glen@rareparts.com to get on the back order. I need name, address, phone number, and forum name. The special we talked about will be good until 10/31/18 at $67.46/each which is a 25% off savings from our online pricing. After that time we will release the product to our vendors to list up online. Thank you for contacting me regarding this need and giving Rare Parts the opportunity to build the lower ball joints to keep Prowlers on the road!! We would also appreciate any posts of your cars and/or installs to our Facebook (rareparts) and/or to Instagram @rarepartsinc" |

I sent my info in yesterday using Ed’s last post. This morning I received a reply from Glen. I ordered two pairs. As soon as I receive them I plan on having the the ones in the car now replaced. I had them checked last week when I had my oil changed and everything was good. I just hope and pray the ones in there right now hold up until I get back from the event in Tennessee. Jer |

I just submitted an order through e-mail and followed up with a phone call to give credit card payment information. I did get voice mail but am expecting a return call to process payment. As many have already said, Thank You to all involved in getting this project developed through completion. Update: Glen assured me that Rare Parts retains the information in their files when they make a part so that they can make the part available as needed in the future. I ordered three pairs of lower ball joints. One pair for the car, one pair for my spare front suspension, and one set to have on hand for someday or someone in need. I got two more sets today, just for insurance against a failure. So they are shipping. Don't forget the discount ends a week from tomorrow. Order a spare set for peace of mind. I am not getting a kickback. I have no monetary interest in all of this. I did get a free set as the test mule, but paid for installation. |
