Took out prowler today for first time in a while. Everything was working fine. Stopped somewhere for a quick beer and when I got back into the car the only gauge that worked was the voltage and the air bag warning light was on. Any ideas? I'm hoping just a fuse. |

Did you shut if off and restart it again? Make sure your battery terminals are tight also. |

What does your odometer and gear selection screen read? |

It doesn't read. Only two of the possible lights show up |

My 97 had the same symptoms. A capacitor on the cluster circuit board had leaked and failed. Replaced it, all is well. There's a thread on here about that, but I can't find the dern thing. |

Thanks. I just got back from where I have the car stored. Started it up and everythi g worked fine. I told my wife about it and she actually said it happened to her too but forgot to tell me. I wonder if just a bad connection. Did your work intermittently or just never work? |

Mine never worked until I replaced the capacitor. Doesn't sound like you have that problem. |

Both my 99s are doing the same thing. Started off as intermittent, but eventually it will stay like it is now. I swapped clusters with a known working cluster, replaced batteries, checked and cleaned all grounds, checked all fuses and relays, unplugged and replugged all harness connectors. I still need to take it to the dealer to check the BCM, I believe that is the problem. The only other thing it may be is the ignition, as I get different garbage on the readout most times when I turn the key on and off. |

Thanks. I was worried the BCM could be the culprit. I sure that is a cheap fix... If anyone else has run into this and the BCM was the problem please let me know. |

I wonder if this is what was causing my issue of gauges dancing up and down. I couldn't find any ground issues which was suggested. Where exactly is this capacitor? Do you pull the dash out and it's in plain sight or do I need to pull both the dash and the instrument cluster to get behind the cluster? |

noted in this thread ... All the instruments quit working on my 1999 Prowler except the volt meter and the tach, also the airbag light is on. All my research led me to believe it was the body control module. I just replaced the BCM and still have the same issue. I guess I just wasted $700. I need some technical help from you guys, I'm frustrated. Car only has 15,400 miles on it.

There is a self diagnostic instrument cluster test in the shop manual. My manual is for a 1999 and starts on 8E-4. Does anyone ever read the manual. lol Good luck. |

Just a heads up to read things carefully before you spend unnecessary money. Here is a good thread . |

Robin, thank you - you are the best! I will look through these and see if I can identify what my issue is. Thanks for the info!

quote: Yes, I do have a manual, and yes, I did read my manual, and the self test is unresponsive. I did want to chase down any other issues before taking it in to the dealer, since the first thing they told me was they were going to replace the instrument cluster, (I already did that). Next they would point to the BCM. The next set of diagnostic tests need to be completed with the scan tool. There are many other things it could have been that would have masked itself as a BCM problem that I chose to run down myself, knowing that the dealer would not have taken the time to do that. I wanted to make sure that there was not a simple problem that I could fix myself, and in past experiences with these cars and dealers that are no longer familiar with them, I wanted to narrow down the focus before they started throwing my money at a problem that they were not sure on how to correct. I had hoped to have one in the shop to be diagnosed way before this, but it keeps getting pushed downward on my "List of Things to do Today". |

What you are seeing is the instrument cluster self test. l page 8J-2 states 'Initiate cluster test by depressing the trip reset button WHILE turning the key to the RUN/START position.' |

I had that problem when the car was new. It was a bad ground under the dash. Look in the manual and you will see where the grounds are. Clean the grounds, they are probably corroded. |
