Finally had some time to work on the Prowlers. It has been a long time since I did that.

The Purple has not been driven since the instrument cluster failed, and I just never had the time to really work on it. The gas had gone stale, even with Stabil, it looked and smelled pretty bad. I did not want to start it or even turn on they key and power up the fuel pump with that old gas. The only way to get it out is to remove the fuel pump ring and siphon it from the top of the tank opening. You cannot siphon from the filler neck.
I emptied the tank completely with a hand pump, then reinstalled the fuel pump ring and filled the car back up with fresh fuel. Other than the gas looking very dark, the tank was surprisingly clean inside. She started right up afterwards with no hesitation and ran perfectly.

My next task is to remove the instrument cluster again and replace it with a test unit I borrowed. If this unit works, then there is a place in New Jersey that claims specifically that he can and will repair the Prowler Instrument Cluster. If the test does not work, then I need to start tracing grounds, since at times some of the odometer screen shows up. So maybe it is a voltage/ground issue.

Both 1999's are doing the same thing, and the 2001 is not, so I will post once I figure this one out. I think I finally have some time to finish this project and get these back on the road.

The test instrument cluster failed and showed the same symptoms as the original, garbage on the screen, no gauges other than the voltage, and an Air Bag light. The garbage changes characters most of the time when I turn the key on and off.

Traced all the grounds today, and cleaned them, even though they all looked good. Also unplugged all plugs and fuses and relays and replaced, with no change.

Only thing left is the BCM or ignition, so it will head to the Dealer at some point for diagnostics.

The car runs and drives great, no other issues other than the cluster. Everything else operates correctly.

I had exactly the same problem on my '97 with the cluster. Turned out that a capacitor had leaked out it's electrolyte. Replaced capacitor, all works fine now!

Was the capacitor on the cluster board or where?

Yep, it was on the cluster circuit board. It was pretty easy to find, it made a very noticeable black glob where it had leaked.

I don't have any pictures. I think it was the one right above the beige ribbon cable at the bottom of the main board. It has a resistor right next to it. See the pictures on the attached link above.

Is this the one? Bad capacitors like these little can type go bad and the top is suppose to be flat, if it is domed it is bad.

That is on point about the clusters. C9 capacitor is bad on about 80% of the ones that I have seen. Easy fix if you're able. Just make sure that pads and traces aren't damaged and solder a new one in there.
