Here's article...

Driving with the tops down, four siblings and other family members rolled down the Dixie Highway last month in a convoy of Plymouth Prowlers. They were bringing their father’s ashes on one last trip, continuing a family tradition he had started in the years before his death in March.

Ed Wasik bought his first Prowler about 10 years ago so it could stand out as he rode in the annual Drivin’ the Dixie historic tour that June.

Wasik soon bought another Prowler, for his wife, in a matching purple.

“We thought that’s cute, they got his and hers,” said their daughter, Karen Jackson of Homewood.

The Prowler is a retro-style vehicle manufactured by Plymouth and later Chrysler in the 1990s and early 2000s. Some used models today are valued around $25,000, according to Kelley Blue Book.

Jackson said her father surprised the family when he unveiled a third Prowler in 2013. He had hidden it in a pole barn he owned in Crete.

“No one knew about it until it showed up in the driveway,” Jackson said.

In 2014, Wasik bought an orange Prowler and in 2015 he asked his daughter what color she would like to drive in the Drivin’ the Dixie.

She figured there were only the three purple ones and one orange one, but he asked, “Aren’t you going to drive the red one?”

More than an obsession with collecting Prowlers, it became clear Wasik was buying one for each of his children, who were spread throughout the south suburbs, Indiana and North Carolina, so they could all come together every year as a family for the Drivin’ the Dixie.

Jackson said her father got lucky with the vanity license plates, with each one reading “Prwlrr” along with the numbers 1 through 5.

“When driving them we all had to drive in order,” she said.

Dave Wasik, Ed’s son, said the vehicles make a statement.

“It’s kind of neat. People enjoy seeing them,” he said. “He liked (the Prowler) because it’s a roadster type vehicle. It was different. It didn’t look like anything else out there. It’s not like a Model T.”

Several antique Model T Ford vehicles, along with dozens of other vintage cars, typically participate in the annual Drivin’ the Dixie event.

Drivin’ the Dixie, which started in 2002, takes place around Father’s Day and features 100 to 200 antique, vintage and modern vehicles driving a 40-mile stretch of Dixie Highway from Blue Island to Momence.

As president of the Homewood Historical Society Elaine Egdorf had been tasked with creating an event celebrating the Dixie Highway, which was built in 1915 and is the state’s second oldest route.

She called organizers and historians in several Southland towns, such as Posen, Markham and Chicago Heights to create stops for the cruisers and the Drivin’ the Dixie was born. Each stop highlights a town’s history and heritage from an 1876 hardware store in Blue Island to a 1950s roller rink in Markham.

Egdorf had come to know the Wasik family over the years but she didn’t know how sick Ed was.

After his wife died of cancer in 2015, Ed Wasik was diagnosed with cancer in 2016. He died in March at age 80. Egdorf placed a Drivin’ the Dixie keychain in his casket.

Despite his absence, Wasik’s children gathered once again in June to cruise down Dixie Highway in the Prowlers.

They all wore shirts reading “Ed’s Prowler Club.” Dave Wasik said his niece drove their dad’s car.

“It was bittersweet,” he said.

Dave Wasik said the family is already looking forward to next year’s event.

“As long as we have the Prowlers we’ll keep doing the Dixie,” he said.

He put his heart in his Prowler aka the CONQUEROO which was like none other.

I know George is now reunited with his beloved son William who passed away two years ago.

The photo below is the last one I have of George with Jay (YELLER CAT) when we ran into him a couple of years ago near our home in FL.

RIP George

http://youtu.be/WM7-PYtXtJM < > Stevie Nicks - LANDSLIDE
.

Lyrics
I took my love and I took it down
I climbed a mountain and I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills
And the landslide brought me down

Oh, mirror in the sky
What is love ?

Can the child within my heart rise above
Can I sail thought the changing ocean tides
Can I handle the seasons of my life

Well, I've been afraid of changing
'Cause I built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And I'm getting older, too

Take my love and take it down
Climb a mountain and turn around
And if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well the landslide brought me down

And if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well maybe the landslide will bring you down
