wildcat you make some good points.... but still... wheels flaking without ever being out of the box..... wheels with less than 3000 miles, that were well taken care of, going bad. someone should take responsibility for the problem and make it right... if you bought the cheapest car on the market and after 3000 miles the paint started peeling off the body ...the mfg would fix the problem, they would have to, or consumers would have their butt or the bad rep would force them out of business. this problem is still a problem because it affects so few people. American should stand behind their product... i'm sure if this issue concerned the Corvette, it would have been resolved long ago. Its hard to accept that we are insignificant. 2 more pennies for the pot |

Larry--I must be missing your point? They put out a defective product and should stand by what they sell. Are you saying that we should take the blame for their product failure? What about the poorly designed center caps? They couldn't get a grill chromed? What about the plastic trim that gets chromed---how do they manage that? The chrome front end was probably a safety concern, or not cost effective. Gary got it done just fine. Maybe they need better and more dedicated engineers( Or less engineers and more hot rod people that could have handled some of the details of the project)to get the job done right, or maybe the handwriting was on the wall for DB to take over and they figured "let them take care of it", or they were so busy with the merger that the wheel question seemed like small potatoes. Whatever, I have a low mileage car that's out of warranty with bad rims and caps. I'm not happy about it. |

I have 4 rims that look like crap on a near perfect, very low mileage car... they say you get what you pay for....news flash !! new rims with full warranty would please me.... $2000 to buy something other than American Racing Wheels would get me down right giddy petition ? publicity ? |

I had the same problem. Lsat year I went to the Dealer and asked to have them replaced. They replaced all 4 off them and the new set have been on for over a year still in perfect condition. Maybe they fixed the problem on the new rims. |

quote: I like Jim's ideas. Would a petition get DC off their cans and take care of our rims even though some Cats, like my 97, is out of warranty? Common sense and of course reading all the replys tells you that the inside barrel portion of the rim was NOT properly prepped. Brian |

My chrome wheels look great and are holding up very well (date of car manufacture 11/98). There is what feels and looks to be some tiny "weld spatter" BB's on the inside of the rears that got chrome plated, but that's about it. No bubbles..no flaking. It does suck that folks are having problems with wheels that were a $1,000 "option" that were standard on the car. I'm curious what it looks like. Could some folks please post example photos of the problems? Chromer |

My chrome rims are peeling on the outside lip. Looks like cr@p I need to have them rechromed. I don't know if it was curb rash or a bad tire mounting or ??? Its the way I bought it. ....next years winter project... |

I wonder if we could all get a deal on replacements from a mfg like Boyd Coddington if we bought in bulk... there has to be a few hundred of us unhappy about our Kellogs editions... Boyds Harm style ones look very sporty.... i wonder if American Racing Wheels subed out the Prowler rims to a korean company.... cheapest set of aftermarkets i could find was about 2000.00 for 4 of course "cheapest" probably got us in this situation |

Holy Crap. I guess I haven't seen the problem before just reading about it I didn't realize how bad it was. My 2002 Candy looks fine. The only thing I see is a small weld bead between the inside and outside. Does this look right or am I going to end up with same problem? Randy. |

jim C. There was a big deal a few years ago regarding stainless steel fittings that came from china... to make a long story short, the pulp and paper industry were purchasing mostly Italian made fittings for their plants. Then a company quoted fittings made from China at 1/3 the cost... pulp companies gave out all the orders to the cheap crap and our quality fittings sat on the self gathering dust.... our QC department ran some tests and refused to allow us to buy any Asian fittings because of liability issues.... 2 years later someone got killed because of failure.... testing showed major quality issues with the cheap o's... our company picked up the blanket PO supplying quality Italian fittings for the next 5 years....God bless our QC dept. Shame on American Racing Wheels for compromising quality just to turn a buck.... i guess it was a long story after all... |

Did you just jinx yourself with that comment? I hope not. Actually - let me throw myself under that bus also. Has anyone with a 2002 had any problems? (Or perhaps did they get their act together by then). |

The chrome has to be totally stripped and re-prepped and costs is prohibitive, as I recall. Check back, there will be more replies to your question. Or you can do a search and check out old replies to confirm what I said (which may not be accurate.) Here is one old thread. http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/012139.html This message has been edited by ed monahan on 02-20-2005 at 12:20 AM |
