As I posted below elsewhere, this approach is based upon an exchange program which will require some "seed" donations. This is the case whether we go the welded approach or threaded/Loctite approach (do-it-yourself).

Please PM me if anyone has some spare original pins to donate to the cause.

Thanks.

First of all, TGF should be supplying the new pins on request, no questions asked, to any prior purchaser. We're certainly not getting the service and support we had become accustomed to from TGF. Yes, it is a definite design defect. Although I haven't had any problem with mine loosening (put them in tight with Loctite), one of them is literally holding on with only one thread and it's just a matter of time.

However, if we want to solve the problem at a reasonable price, I see at least 3 possible easy ways:

1. Has anyone talked to Art Stoner? Looking at his J-hooks with the precision weld, it should be an easy matter for him to modify the pins by cutting off the threaded portion and welding on a longer threaded piece (and adding a nut as well if a hex-section is desired). I would think this would be equal (or even less expensive) than the J-hooks since there's no custom pices.

2. Lacking the above, when mine finally goes, I just go down to Home Depot, but a couple of hex threaded-rod couplers (or maybe one, cutting it in half) and extend the threaded rod using permanent Loctite.

3. If someone has a spare set of original pins that they want to donate to the cause, send them to me (PM me for address) and I'll take a look at doing #2 and post the process for the public domain. I might even be bribed ($50-bucks?) into doing this as a service on an exchange basis.

Yes, I agree that TGF should step up and resolve their problem. No, I don't believe it's worth this much complaining when there should be a simple solution if we want it.

Great to see a post by you GRROWL!

I used the TGF pins and they never worked properly and nearly drove me nuts. I complained to TGF and they sent me a second set, which, quite honestly, I never looked at too closely. I still have them and Art is welcome to use them if he wants to try is hand at fabricating something.

While I was waiting for TGF I bought the longer aftermarket pin in the photograph from OBI-WAN and I've had little or no trouble since then. I never used Loctite on the new pins and they are working fine.

Hi, Bob,

Yes, I post when I have something to say. In this case, it looks like a simple solution that someone just has to push until it's done.

When my pins fail, I know that I would come up with a solution, but if for the same effort we can solve this problem for everyone all at once, why not?

SOooo, we will take you up on the offer. Let's see who else steps up to the plate and we'll figure out where to send everything.

Thanks.

I purchased obi-wan's aftermarket pins, and it fixed my problems for good. After I got them adjusted (no locktite) I haven't had to readjust them at all.

In the pic' above you see the org. pin and one of mine. These have been installed in many tops to this date and work very well. The kit comes with the special tools and complete instructions to do the adjustment correctly. Many owners have done this installation and are very happy with the kit. I have them in stock and ready to ship. They are 125.oo inc. shipping. I have had them on the market for several years now. If you want one of these please contact me with questions or send the check to:

I suggest that you post this answer this over at: http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/016083-2.html
If what you say is true, I don't understand why the anger being expressed over there doesn't accept this as a solution.

Obi-wan's response has been a long time coming - I would suggest we wait and see if Art Stoner will come up with an alternative. He appears to be a very reputable vendor............

I saw the comparison pictures for the earlier post. But can anyone say if the hard tops purchased last summer (I think a lot of 10 or so of which mine was one) had the long pins, short pins or just different pins!

I'm pretty certain TGF is still using the short version. I recall Obi-Wan offered to work with them on a longer bolt but they weren't interested. When I told them I was having trouble with my pins they mailed me some short ones.

I got a price on 3 1/4 inch pins made from stainless steel
I'll be ordering 50 of these...I'm still working on the
other components that will give some side flex but will lock
and not loosen like the OEM ones... I'm hoping to sell them
in the 40.00 dollar range per set

Can I get a count of how many would be interest in buying a set

Don

Ed...I'll sell them in Canadian funds plus shipping....I was thinking your right in the middle of the USA and I'd send all of them to you...to ship out, It's a lot cheaper to send them from in the US or you could just take them to Tulsa and save all the shipping cost....Of course you could charge
a delivery fee

Bob..nice chatting with you today....I'm thinking of a
Neoprene Flex bushing Housing Sleeve to give the pins
some side to side flex and help with the problem and still
keep the pins tight on the hard top

Thanks for all your technical input and hopefully
we can come up with an inexpensive fix to
this long standing problem with the hardtop

I'll be using my brothers shop to do the work

Revised for clarity

Don, We can do that for real. I will be more than happy to be the EXCLUSIVE Midwest USA distributor. (Wait until Alley Cat sees HIS price, lol).
If they are ready by Tulsa, I can take them. That is only about 8 weeks away, me thinks.
Just let me know.
