Prowler Trivia Test

During the preliminary design of the Prowler the hood was to open from the back to the front but was decided just before production that it should open from the front to the back.

This design was scraped because.

A. Cheaper to make it open from the front to the back.
B. Could not design a hinge system strong enough.
C. Failed crash test and considered a safety problem.
D. A new front end would have to be designed.

Hmmmm, I'd say cost, but with a hood like the Prowler's, if hinged at the front (as the prototype is) a head-on frontal impact could pose a serious problem if it became unlatched in a crash... like right into the windshield! I'll gladly take a couple hinges mounted in front of me for this reason.
The width of the hood at the windshield is just narrower than the windshild itself.

A. Cheaper to make it open from the front to the back.
TRUE. Weight and cost were considered alot when creating the production version. One reason the power top from the prototype didn't make it into production was due to weight as well as cost. The prototype roof opened much like the SLK roofs, only five years before the SLK came out.
Personally, I would have liked to see the power roof as an option.

B. Could not design a hinge system strong enough.
Already designed on the prototype. A prop rod could support the weight when the hood would be opened. (I don't know if the prototype had a prop rod though.)

C. Failed crash test and considered a safety problem.
See above

D. A new front end would have to be designed.
Based on the hood alone, I don't think so. The design already existed on the prototype. Suspension and bumper regulations played the part in appearance changes of the front between the production version vs. the prototype.

I believe the answer was B. I ask Jerry that question because I would have liked the hood & trunk to open as on the concept.

I was offered a lot of money for mine.

I think this is the rarest of all the Prowler collectibles.

Sassy - I think there is one more rare - it is a Maisto (I think) that has Chrysler spelled "Chrystler" on the bottom. These were pulled from the shelves after a couple of weeks.

Cliff I started a thread on this proto type a long time ago asking about the different rims on it and I think Al said about the mispelling well I have one of the ones they must have fixed and sent back out to resell. I Put it under a magnifiying glass and first part of the chryler is raised letters but last ler isn't been scraped off and etched in.I also thk someone said the front end would need to be bigger to accept the hood properly so D is my final answer SM..

Happy New Year to ALL..

Cliff, I have that model you are talking about. My dealer actually gave it to me for free! I wonder if it's worth enough to make up for the $4k over sticker he charged me! lol.

Seriously, does anyone know the value of the Prowler model with Chrysler spelled wrong?

Thanks,
Daryl

The Prowler on the base aka the Puddle Prowler is more rare and more valuable. I have recently seen the mis-spelled version on E-Bay at very reasonable prices.

The misprint car is only worth what someone will pay for it. I have 2 of them. They were the 1st one produced by Ertl. They are in American Muscle 1:18th scale with flag background.

I could have bought one for $40 at swap meet but decided to check mine at home 1st. You must remove it from the box and the base it is attached to to see it.

The car on the aluminum base would be one of the rarest. I think these were given to the dealers. I tried to get the one from the dealer I bought the car from but NO DEAL. I seen on on ebay that went for over $300. I would really like to have one but will not pay that much for it.

As far as I know the mispelling is on the car only. I looked at the box I had and figured I didn't have one. The guy at the swap meet told me that it was on the car. I came home and checked and YES it was a misprint. Then I checked a lamp Sue had bought me with a Prowler mounted on base and so I thought I should check it too, and it also was a misprint

Hi everyone,

I am a retired Chrysler dealer and as I read this thread and saw the photos of the "puddle Prowler", I remembered I had one of them at one time. I went to the storage area where all of my dealer memorabilia is and rummaged around and found it. It is just like the photos in this thread, in the original box, with the "puddle" and mounting screws and even has the letter to the dealers from Steve Torok, GM of the C/P division dated 2/5/96. The engraved platform (the "puddle" as it is called) was received by the dealers first and the model was presented to us at a later date. I had forgotten about it until I saw this thread. If anyone is interested in acquiring this model, email me with an offer and let me consider it. I am not sure if I want to sell it or not but if the offers are strong enough, I may be tempted. If I were to let it go, I would much rather sell it to someone on <prowleronline.com> than put it on ebay. I'll look forward to hearing from all of you. I'll do my best to respond to you promptly. Thanks,
Mike
