I have a Dodge 2500 with the 5.9L short bed ext. cab. a 20 foot AzTex trailer. 8.5 feet wide ( yes you need it that wide.) full drop backdoor. The trailer is 102" in height with a side door. I have the full compliment of Prowler accessories i.e. I made a short tongue for my trailer and it all fits. ------------------ |

I pulled to Crazy Horse with a Dakota Club Cab V-8, standard transmission and an 18 foot enclosed trailer. Eighteen feet is too short if you have a Prowler Trailer to carry as well. That was about the limit for a Dakota, don't get anything smaller. I preferred the standard transmission, but you have to pull in fourth gear, don't bother trying to use fifth gear. It took about 1000 miles for that to sink in even though Wildcat starting telling me long before that! I averaged 11.8 miles per gallon. ------------------ This message has been edited by Dave Mills on 01-10-2002 at 04:58 PM |

SF, I have logged many miles trailing my KAT.. IF you want an enclosed trailer then a Diesel truck is a MUST.. You can do it with a v8 gas ford,Chevy or dodge but you MPG will not be great ... I did it with f-150 super crew on my trip to grand canyon with open trailer and got only 8 mpg and towing an enclosed will be worst.. I own A Lightning and it is not the best setup for an enclosed trailer but it would do fine with an open trailer.. I just sold my 01 F-250 crew cab TD and it did Great last year in my trips to crazy horse and woodward doing 80mph getting 15 mpg and going through mountains with NO problem.. Texas roll-back is the best open trailer you can buy they are listed on the front page and I don't know much about the enclosed ones... |

You gotta ask yourself a question. WHY do you need a trailer? A little over a year ago I bought a Sloan (same as GaryC's Texas RollBack for all intents and purposes) to haul my Viper from Seattle to Rhode Island. I ended up in Ri wishing I had spent the extra money for an enclosed. Two weeks from now I pick up my new-to-me 20' enclosed trailer custom built for another Viper owner (Wing King) for his GTS. Need I say more? How often will you use it? How far will you likely tow? And I guess...how much can you part with? An open trailer is nice....the Sloan (or TRB) are a breeze to work, no hassle, and you will NEVER spend 15 minutes at a rest stop...NO WAY...not gonna happen! You might find yourself stopping your trip early in the afternoon/evening so you can get a good parking spot at the motel....then taking off about 4AM to make up driving time. Short distances are not a concern IMHO. By the time I got to RI I would KILL for a hose and a nice place to wash my car!!! I stopped by Reno to see my sister (no...Seattle to Ri DOES NOT go anywhere NEAR Reno...I know!!!) and the car sat in the Nevada desert for two days....I was going crazy! Now, when I make the trip back to Seattle in June, I have NO WORRIES! I can lock it up, keep it clean, lug all my other junk around with the car....I'm a happy person! Now, if you are gonna pull with a Suburban-type vehicle (meaning NOT a pickup), then an open trailer might do well since you'll have plenty of storage space in the rig. I pull with a 95 Ram 1500, 5.9, BUILT tranny 4spd auto, full tow package. I have recently been looking at trucks...but the times just aren't right at this moment. I'd stick with a 3/4 ton or 1 ton of your choice (mine is Dodge), and I was leaning towards the Cummins (or diesel of choice) as my research showed it was THE towing machine. There are some fairly good priced 2500 and 3500's out there....look at Woodhouse CP in Blair, Nebraska (ask for Bill Pemberton). GOOD LUCK!!!! Sometimes it is ALMOST as fun to tow the Viper as it is to drive it!! Now all I need is a RED truck!! ------------------ |

I have a 24'x 8 1/2' enclosed Cargo Express trailer and pull it with a `95 3/4 ton 4x4 with cummins diesel. I can put car & trailer in it and still have room to put other stuff in it. One suggestion, get the hook rail that is inlayed in the floor like in the side of a semi trailer to tie down the car. This way you have alot of flexibility in tieing down. With D rings you are limited to how the straps go. If you never haul anything but the cat no big deal, but I use mine for more than just the cat. Starflame. I pull a 20' enclosed with Dodge 2500 Cummins diesel. I had 1/2 ton gas powered Dodge Ram & it kept shifting out of Overdrive. Gas mileage was around 5 to 7 mpg when pulling... It pulled open trailer OK. So, I updgraded to the Diesel... Towing is a breeze... It's actully a little scary, all of sudden you notice you're going 80 mph & don't realize there's a trailer behind you... One other thing on the trailer that is a MUST have... A another door on the driver side of the trailer. This is called an escape door or something simliar... It's mounted above the trailer wheels. With my Prowler, the Prowler door is high enough it will open right outside the trailer... With two other vehicles I've towed (one car & one truck) the door won't go over the inside trailer fender. So, you crawl out the window & through the escape door... ------------------ |

I have a 2500 or 3/4 ton diesel truck and would definetly point you in the DIESEL direction when it comes to towing. Also diesels have no problems with altitude changes because ther is no carb. I sure like the look of the GM DuraMax Diesel, suppose to have the most HP from a stock engine. JMO Alex ------------------ |
