Good thoughts Rich. I retired at 55,,,and after one year found out I was bored. I can live off my present retirement, but not do the things I want to do, so back to work I went just to make more and spend it on fun. One thing my mother told me three months before her passing: "Son, don't deprive yourself of anything you want or want to do in life,,,,,,,you'll regret it."
I now live by her last words to me.

AC, My Dad taught me that lesson as well but he never said a word...
he retired early at 60 instead of 65... spent five years enjoying his life.. he learned to ski and traveled all over North America and even to Austria with his new ski pals... took up scuba and joind a diving club, went sky diving, visited family and friends all over Canada and the US. learned to Windsurf. Took up Golf. and on and on...

The year he would have retired at 65 he found out he had cancer... three years later he was gone.
I'm glad he had those five years of fun, after a lifetime of working hard to support his family.

Thanks for the lesson Dad...

Jesus guys! I don't disagree with having fun and living life! I only told him to save up 6 to 9 months of living expenses for the tough times that always are looming around the corner. You would think I asked him to become like Scrooge!

Quincy, don't take it personally. Everyone has a different opinion about almost every subject. I used to think much more conservatively than I do now. I had a heart attack and decided it was time to enjoy life a lot more.

I have to agree with Ed. Too many of my friends have worked themselves to death and didn't stop to enjoy anything. I guess they thought they would do it all when they retired. I went through a health scare early in the year and I decided it was time to have fun and not worry about the money.

I suppose a lot of your 'life style choices' are based upon how you were raised, and 'when' you were raised. Both my parents were raised during the Great Depression. They lived a very frugal life style, and always 'hoarded' goods in the basement for expected hard times. One can not help but to have these 'traits' engraved into your memory banks. Our family was not 'well to do' so we were raised in a very frugal environment. I also remember well the oil embargo years and being laid off in 1978 with a new wife, house, car payments, and zero nest egg. I also remember the mortgage company threatening eviction if payments were not made in full every month. Having worked in the auto industry all my adult life, I have also seen many down times, and not a lot of up times. So Ed, you are correct, each persons experiences play on their individual life style choices; past, present, future! That said, I still think its prudent to have some availiable cash stash 'just in case'. But, you can bet if I were to find out I only had 6-12 months to live I would definitely start to party very hard!

Quincy, my mom is in an assisted living rest home. I just discovered that when she got a hair permanent a few months ago that she paid the beautician in installments, $ 10 at a time. She had a couple hundred in her purse but made payments. She does not need cash for anything, in reality. She was just hoarding money. That comes from living thru the depression and a lot of hard times.
My belief was that if you couldn't pay cash, you didn't need it. The Dr. bills got paid in full every month, just like every other bill. No extra money meant no extras, PERIOD. I no longer feel that way. But I do have some $ for a rainy day, so maybe that is why I feel that way.
I am just afraid Marty is going to ask for donations. lol

Quincy, Just so you know I had no problem with any of your suggestions to Marty. My response was more to another comment, which really rubbed me the wrong way.

if i'm lucky enough to be laying on my death bed, i would much rather be reflecting on all the fun i had in life, instead of how much money i had saved in a bank.
to my knowledge, we only pass this way once, so enjoy it now !!!
#1 is my choice

Rick - Orange is the top of my list for a second Prowler. As far as the caps go, it's your keyboard. Just remember I'm from Kentucky and read slow anyway.

Marty:

I think it all comes down to lifestyle and what you may need in a daily driver. All of us are different in our needs day in and day out.

Your kids are grown and gone from the nest. I don't think you need a vehicle to haul stuff or to carry clients in. You are different from somebody like me who needs to haul kids and their gear around and have to take clients/customers/ out to locations/lunch on a regular basis. You don't need practical, I do.

You seem the kind of guy who would go crazy driving a SUV, van or sedan as a daily. You also have Prowler blood in your veins. You have a lot of money and sweat equity in your Prowler that would be very hard to get back in a sell. I would suggest keeping your present Prowler to scratch your Hot Rod itch and get a new (or gently used) sporty car (Mustang, Corvette, etc.) with an OEM warranty as your daily driver. A hot pick up truck might be another thought.

Good luck whatever your decision.

Road in Jim Kenney's SRT-8 Charger yesterday. Thought that I wanted a SRT-8 300 but have changed my mind. Different sound, different feel...too cool!

You can have your cake and eat it too. Keep the Prowler and have fun with it. Drive the Charger daily, just try to keep back tires on it more than twenty miles. Works for two couples to dinner, work and going to church on Sunday before the drag races.

FINANCING EVERYTHING IS AN AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE. IT IS AN UNFORTUNATE EVIL WHEN NECESSARY, HOWEVER WHEN IT ISN'T NECESSARY IT SHOULD NOT BE USED. SAVE YOUR MONEY THEN BUY ANOTHER PROWLER WITH CASH. THE CAR IS EXPENSIVE ENOUGH. WHY FINANCE YOUR HOBBY BY ADDING UNNECESSARY INTEREST!!!

I think you should do whatever you will be happiest with. In the end it has to be your decision. I always wanted a Prowler. If you had told me I would have two, I'd have told you that was crazy. Do I need two? No. I keep one with the hardtop on and the other as the convertible. I drive them as it suits my mood at the time. I can't say that there is any other car that I'm at all interested in as much. Would I replace my Prowlers? Naah!
