I bought a new 2002 Silver Prowler a week and a half ago and already have a problem. The gas gauge never reads the correct amount, and it never goes above 3/4 of a tank no matter how full it is. Today my dealership put in a new sending unit and that did not solve the problem. I believe they also said they put in a new gauge and that didn't help either. The mechanic said he called the Chrysler Star hotline(???) and found no helpful information. Has anyone had the same problem or have any idea what could be wrong?

Thanks in advance,
A Stressed Out New Prowler Owner

I am not any help, BUT I have had my car for 3 years and 2 months and the only time the fuel gauge is accurate is when it is full. It drops like a rock immediately, giving me a heart attack the day I picked it up. I used a half tank in the first 40 miles. When the light comes on I still have 2 or 3 Gallons. So far it has not been a problem.
Leaving for Colo. Saturday and then it may become a problem. If you are a perfectionist, this is not the car for you. There are a lot of quirks, in my opinion. I can live with them.
Dissenting opinions to follow shortly.

I fully agree with Ed ... the car does have it's quirks, and as a perfectionist myself, I find some irritating but livable if you want to own and drive a car like the Prowler. HOWEVER, the gauge should read full and not 3/4 as you state ... it DOES drop like a rock as Ed states, but I have always gotten my '99 to read full when it is. Good luck.

Stressed, is it possible that your tank isn't full? Some have to turn the nozel handle upwards to get the tank to fill all the way and not trip.

I have the same thing going on with my new '01 Mulholland (700 miles now) except the tank reads full when I first start it up and will stay there for a while (15 minutes or so) and then registers the correct level, I THINK. I've tried tapping on the gauge face but it makes no difference. No big deal for me, but I make sure I reset the trip odometer and not go beyond where 12 gallons will take me. I'm living with it rather than going to the dealer.

I can get my 99' read full, but it to drops like a rock. I can use almost 3/4's of tank in a day of driving around. I always thought it was because I like to get a little heavy footed. Getting about 11 miles to a gallon.

If you are only getting 11 MPG there must be something wrong.

It is very hard to get some cars full. How many gallons are you putting in. If you are on 1/4 tank and it takes 8 gallons and is only on 3/4 then maybe the body control mod. is defective. But if you only put in 5~6 gallons maybe you only have 3/4.

My gauge is close to being correct but I to watch the angle the car is on as I fill it. If the car isn't flat when filling it can make it hard to get full

Mine is like Ed's kitty. Full at first, drops fast, when it shows E, there is still 3 + gallons in the tank.

2002silver - your problem sounds alittle different,,,,keep bitching until its fixed.

2002SilverProwler...........First of all, welcome to the POA board! Try not to get stressed out, we will attempt to get you an answer. I will talk to the appropriate people tomorrow to see if they have some sort of answer.

There has been discussion about filling the tank. Mine always reads "Full" when I fill it and it will stay that way for quite some time and then drop suddenly. Has always done that and as long as I knew that, I also knew what to expect.

Here are some links that might help explain that part of it and who knows, maybe that fix will help the other problem. In the meantime, I will see if I can get a more definitive answer!

I agree with Ken G. It must be the color becuase my 99 Yellow Kat has had no fuel guage problems. Did have a problem early on with having to take two or three stops to get the tank fuel but the dealer corrected that with a new filler neck.

Hey guys thanks for all the responses. Just to clarify, I know the tank is full because when I went to pick up the car the salesman took me to the gas station to fill it up because the gauge showed I had a little less than half a tank. The pump kept shutting off immediately after he would pull the handle so we thought the pump was not working. He kept pumping more gas in until it finally overflowed and the gauge at that time was still a little under a half tank. About 5 minutes after I turned it on I noticed it was at about 3/4.
CJ thanks for your help, I really appreciate it. If you find anything out please let me know. Thanks.

I havenít had any problems with the fuel gauge either. So add Mulholland Edition (or Midnight Blue) to the positive side. I fell like the empty mark is probably with 4 gallons in it (thatís a third of a tank right), but that doesnít surprise me. Also mine has registered full when full. Sounds like I should be happy that this is working properly.

I did find this quote in the Satisfaction section of a review of the Prowler on www.carpoint.com. When I read it again recently, I though it pretty accurately summed up the situation and applies here. It read :

Satisfaction: Prowler owners are so enticed by their vehicle that they'll never admit to any shortcomings.

Those "Orange Kat" gas gauges work perfect, a new selling feature. I'll sell you my working gas gauge for lets say $50k. Sounds about right to me. Of course when I do start the Kat up it seems to always be hungry so I feed her more GAS. I have noticed that some pumps are different in that they continually shut off when pumping and I have to adjust the angle I put the filler tube in. But Kat and I are buddies so neither of us complain, we just grin and talk to everyone. Enjoy!!

I got my car back, but it hasn't been fixed yet. The mechanic said he thinks he knows what it is now and they are ordering the part. I have to take it back up there the beginning of next week. CJ if you come up with anything let me know, I am doubtful this will fix the problem.
