BC-Attacks-Q&A 09-11 0935 BC-Attacks-Q&A,0934 Attack: Questions and answers on the terrorist attacks By RONALD BLUM Associated Press Writer Some questions and answers about Tuesday's attacks: Q: What was attacked in New York and Washington and when? A: At 8:45 a.m. EDT, American Flight 11 slammed into One World Trade Center, the complex's north tower, in New York. Eighteen minutes later, United Flight 175 crashed into Two World Trade Center, the south tower. At 9:43 a.m., American Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon. At 9:50 a.m., the north tower collapsed. At about 10 a.m., United Flight 93 crashed about 80 miles from Pittsburgh, and Rep. James Moran, D-Va., later said it was apparently targeting Camp David, the presidential retreat in the mountains of Maryland. At 10:29 a.m., the south tower toppled. At 5:25 p.m., Seven World Trade Center, an evacuated 47-story building, collapsed in flames. Q: What is the World Trade Center? A: A complex of office buildings in lower Manhattan near Wall Street, highlighted by the 110-story twin towers. Groundbreaking on the twin towers, designed by architect Minoru Yamasaki, was on Aug. 5, 1966, and the ribbon-cutting for the opening was April 4, 1973. About 50,000 people worked in the twin towers. At 1,368 feet, One World Trade Center was the fifth-tallest building in the world, according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. At 1,362 feet, Two World Trade Center was the sixth-tallest. Q: Who is responsible? A: Not immediately known, but federal authorities identified terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden as the prime suspect. Q: How many people died? A: Too early to tell, but hundreds of people aboard the planes died, and an untold number of others were feared buried in the rubble of the twin towers. Thousands were injured at the World Trade Center. Q: Wasn't there a previous attack on the World Trade Center? On Feb. 26, 1993, a terrorist bomb exploded on the B-2 level in One World Trade Center, killing six people and leaving a 200-foot-wide, five-story-deep crater. U.S. officials say bin Laden was the architect and also was behind the 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa and last year's bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen. Q: Where were the planes headed and how many were aboard? A: American Flight 11, a Boeing 767 headed from Boston to Los Angeles, was carrying 81 passengers, nine flight attendants and two pilots; American Flight 77, a Boeing 757 from Washington to Los Angeles, had 58 passengers, four flight attendants and two pilots; United Flight 93, a Boeing 757 from Newark, N.J., to San Francisco, had 38 passengers, five flight attendants and two pilots; and United Flight 175, a Boeing 767 from Boston to Los Angeles, was carrying 56 passengers, seven attendants and two pilots Q: How many people altogether were aboard the flights? A. 266. Q: How do we know the planes were hijacked? A: At 9:58 a.m., an emergency dispatcher received a cell phone call from a man who said he was a passenger locked in a bathroom aboard United Flight 93, said dispatch supervisor Glenn Cramer in Westmoreland County, Pa. "We are being hijacked!" the caller said. Also, Barbara Olson, a former congressional investigator and wife of U.S. Solicitor General Theodore Olson, was aboard American Flight 77 and twice called her husband. She described some details of the hijacking, including that the attackers were using knife-like instruments, law enforcement officials said. Q: When will commercial planes start flying again? A: The Federal Aviation Administration, which at 9:43 a.m. halted all U.S. air traffic for the first time, said the ban would not be lifted until noon EDT Wednesday, at the earliest. Some airports also were evacuated. Q: Where was President Bush? A: He was in Sarasota, Fla., when the attacks began, then went to Barksdale Air Force Base, La., where he stayed 90 minutes before going to Offutt Air Force Base, Neb. There, at the headquarters of the U.S. Strategic Command, which controls U.S. nuclear weapons, Bush convened a National Security Council meeting by teleconference. Two fighter jets circled the base and nearby roads were closed during the president's stay. Bush planned to return to Washington to address the nation on television. Q: Where were other top government officials? A: Vice President Dick Cheney remained in a nearly deserted White House. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, next in the line of presidential succession after Cheney, and other top leaders of Congress were taken to a secure government facility 75 miles west of Washington. Secretary of State Colin Powell cut short a trip to South America to return to Washington. Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan was returning from a banking conference in Switzerland. Q: What did the U.S. military do? A: The military was ordered to Threat Level Delta, the highest level, at least in the Washington area, according to Air Force Capt. Tatiana Stead at Andrews Air Force Base. Black-uniformed Secret Service agents with machine guns patrolled the White House grounds and fighter jets circled over the city. The Navy sent missile destroyers and other vessels to New York and Washington. Q: What was evacuated? A: Government and office buildings around the country, including the Capitol, the White House, the State Department, the CIA and the United Nations. All of lower Manhattan also was evacuated and will be closed Wednesday to all but rescue personnel. Q: What did Wall Street do? A: All financial markets closed. (AP) -- A passenger on United Airlines Flight 93 called on his cell phone from a locked bathroom and delivered a chilling message. "We are being hijacked, we are being hijacked!" Minutes later the jetliner crashed in western Pennsylvania with 45 people aboard, the last of four closely timed terror attacks across the country. Radar showed the San Francisco-bound Boeing 757 from Newark, N.J., had nearly reached Cleveland when it made a sharp left turn and headed back toward Pennsylvania, crashing in a grassy field edged by woods about 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. There was no sign of any survivors. "There's a crater gouged in the earth, the plane is pretty much disintegrated. There's nothing left but scorched trees," said Mark Stahl, of Somerset, who went to the scene. The Boeing 757 crash was one of four reported Tuesday by United and American Airlines. Two jetliners crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City and one hit the Pentagon in Washington. A Virginia congressman said the Flight 93's intended target was apparently Camp David, the presidential retreat in the mountains of Maryland, about 85 miles southeast of the crash site. United said Flight 93 left Newark at 8:01 a.m. with 38 passengers, two pilots and five flight attendants. Minutes before the 10 a.m. crash, an emergency dispatcher in Pennsylvania received a cell phone call from a man who said he was a passenger locked in a bathroom aboard United Flight 93. The man repeatedly said the call was not a hoax, said dispatch supervisor Glenn Cramer in neighboring Westmoreland County. "We are being hijacked, we are being hijacked!" Cramer quoted the man from a transcript of the call. The man told dispatchers the plane "was going down. He heard some sort of explosion and saw white smoke coming from the plane and we lost contact with him," Cramer said. FBI agent Wells Morrison wouldn't confirm that the plane was hijacked, but said the FBI was reviewing the tape of the 911 call. "At this point, we're not prepared to say it was an act of terrorism, though it appears to be that," Morrison said. Rep. James Moran, D-Va., said after a Marine Corps briefing in Washington that Flight 93 was apparently intended for Camp David. Reporters were taken to the top of a hill overlooking the scene. The crash left a V-shaped gouge in a grassy field surrounded by thick woods, just below a hilltop strip mine. The gouge is 8- to 10-feet deep and 15- to 20-feet long, said Capt. Frank Monaco of the Pennsylvania State Police. Investigators believe the plane crashed there and disintegrated, sending debris into thick trees nearby, Monaco said. "There's nothing in the ground you can see," Monaco said of the crash site. "It just looks like tiny pieces of debris." Michael R. Merringer was out on a mountain bike ride with his wife, Amy, about two miles away from the crash site. "I heard the engine gun two different times and then I heard a loud bang and the windows of the houses all around rattled," Merringer said. "I looked up and I saw the smoke coming up." The couple rushed home and drove near the scene. "Everything was on fire and there was trees knocked down and there was a big hole in the ground," he said. In Chicago, United CEO James Goodwin said the airline was sending a team to Pennsylvania to assist in the investigation and to provide assistance to family members. "Today's events are a tragedy and our prayers are with everyone at this time," Goodwin said. Without citing a death toll, United said Tuesday afternoon that it had identified all passengers and crew members on board the two planes and was notifying family members. No names were released immediately. In Pennsylvania's Richland Township, police Chief Jim Mock said air traffic control coordinators reported Tuesday morning that a large aircraft was heading toward John Murtha Johnstown Cambria County Municipal Airport in the township, about 60 miles east of Pittsburgh. The air traffic controllers said the aircraft would not identify itself, according to Mock, who is also the airport's emergency coordinator. Shortly after talking to the controllers, Mock said, a plane crashed north of the Somerset County airport about 20 miles away. "It shook the whole station," said Bruce Grine, owner of Grine's Service Center in Shanksville, about 21/2 miles from the crash. "Everybody ran outside, and by that time the fire whistle was blowing." Stahl was listening to reports about the World Trade Center attacks on the radio when he heard Flight 93 crash. He took pictures showing a billowing cloud and a large, black hole burrowed into the ground surrounded by small piece of airplane still on fire. "I didn't know what to think, it was shocking," Stahl said. At San Francisco International Airport, where the plane was headed, an evacuation was ordered. Bomb-sniffing dogs patrolled the hallways and a counseling center was set up for relatives of the people aboard Flight 93. "This is a time for compassion. It's not a time for long sermons," said the Rev. John Delariva, a Catholic priest who is part of the airport's counseling team. Unfortunately... this has turned into a case of kill or be killed... to do nothing provokes more killing because they can... to kill a few causes more hatred and revenge killing. We have been swept into the madness the same way we were swept into it before and it is too late to back out now. The only way to end this is to end the people who are responsble and all those who support them. They are rejoicing in the streets in some areas of the world... how sad... how utterly pathetic... all in the name of God. I'm sure now we have integrity in the White House, we can assume the best and the madness will be delt with swiftly (sarcasm). ------------------ |

Todd, I think your comments are really in poor taste at this time. I don't think anyone's political leanings are very important right now. I think when he was Governor, Dubyah, didn't let the murderers off in Texas and he wasn't groping little girls under his desk. Let's wait a couple of days to see how he reacts. |

Never have felt this way before....or even experienced anything like this. It seems all like a bad dream ; something that you would some day wake up, and everything would be back to normal. I think, the thing that hurt the most was actually seeing the people taking their own lives by jumping to their death. I also heard someone on tv...that survived, explained how.....in the WTC building....there were handicapped people...just...sitting in the halls, b/c they couldn't get down the stairs - all they could do was wait for the building to go down. One station, asked a little boy ( maybe about 5- 6 ) what happened...and all he said was " a lot of people are going to heaven " - it still brings tears to my eyes. The latest news is that, the plane that hit the Pentagon, was originally supposed to hit the White House and / or Air force 1. Also, 3 " Arabic " persons were found in a Mass. hotel. My heart goes to all those affected..... |

Just found out today that my uncle who has recently started working in the WTC, was on vacation this week. Very thankful, but still crying when watching the news. Brian - I used to work in a book store, and had the Nostradamus book w/ all his prophecies in it. I never looked at it, in fear of any of it becoming a reality. It's amazing you found that out. So scary, but let's hope it stays a vision, and not a reality. Larry - I love the article, I agree with CJ - someone should send it to the major tv stations, ect. |

It is unfortunate that we have three choices here. do nothing and tell those responsible they are free to do whatever they want, strike back like before and make more terrorists out of their friends and make them do more attacks for revenge, or, truly go to war with all the country's known to harbor terrorists... which, going to war with one will automatically bring the others in on it anyhow, thus, WW111. When a bee stings you, either leave the hive alone or destroy it, when the hive is in your living room... ------------------ |

I have seen the NOSTRADAMUS thing already. It is already being reported elsewhere as a prediction hoax. Something about the real translation was "the year 1999 and seven months" and the other verses were either from different predictions or made up all together. I do not know anything about Nostaradamus other than vague general knowledge, but certainly hope it is just a hoax. Marty ------------------ |
