Al, Glad your friend is OK, just waiting for word from my friend that works blocks away from Ground Zero. He was here last week for a visit. Really hate to think how these people that do attacks will top this. I hope and pray this is not the tip of the Iceberg. This has to be a World wide effort to stop the madness. Can't remember the last time at church but I will be there tonight. |

BC-TerrorismAttacks 15thLd-Writethru a0791 09-11 1161 BC-Terrorism Attacks, 15th Ld-Writethru, a0791,1110 URGENT Plane crashes into Pentagon; troops deployed in response to apparent terrorist attack Eds: Top 19 grafs with Bush convening National Security Council from Nebraska; raising reference to buildings evacuated; includes Hughes quote on banking system; military denies shooting down any planes By RON FOURNIER Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Pentagon took a direct, devastating hit from an aircraft and the enduring symbols of American power were evacuated Tuesday as an apparent terrorist attack spread fear and chaos in the nation's capital. President Bush ordered the nation's military to "high-alert status," and vowed to "hunt down and punish those responsible" for parallel attacks in Washington and New York, where the World Trade Center collapsed into rubble with a heavy loss of life. The president, in Florida at the time of the attacks, was flown at midday to the security of Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana, then later to the U.S. Strategic Command headquarters in Nebraska. Aides said he convened a National Security Council meeting by teleconference from there, and described him as looking forward to returning to Washington. The top leaders of Congress were led to the safety of an undisclosed location. Guards armed with automatic weapons patrolled the White House grounds and military aircraft secured the skies above the capital city. Within hours, long lines of blood donors queued up outside an area hospital. And Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, the city's Catholic leader, said an unusually large number of worshippers -- between 3,000 and 4,000 attended Mass at the downtown cathedral as the enormity of the destruction began to sink in. The departments of Justice, State, Treasury and Defense and the Central Intelligence Agency were evacuated -- an estimated 20,000 at the Pentagon alone. The FAA ordered the entire nationwide air traffic system shut down for the first time in history. The Pentagon, the nerve center of the nation's military, burst into flames and a portion of one side of the five-sided structure collapsed when a plane -- reported hijacked and carrying a number of passengers -- struck in midmorning. Secondary explosions were reported and great billows of smoke drifted skyward from the huge building in Arlington, Va., toward the Potomac River and Washington beyond. "The fire was intense," Rear Adm. Craig Quigley, the Pentagon spokesman, told reporters in a makeshift briefing at a gasoline station across the street. At midday, local hospitals reported receiving 40 victims of the attack, with seven patients in critical condition admitted to one facility for treatment of burns. "The whole building shook" with the impact, said Terry Yonkers, an Air Force civilian employee at work inside the Pentagon at the time of the attack. "There was screaming and pandemonium," he said, but the evacuation ordered shortly afterward was carried out smoothly. Law enforcement officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the plane that struck the Pentagon was an American Airlines jetliner that had taken off from Dulles International Airport on a scheduled flight to Los Angeles. Officials said one of the passengers was Barbara Olson, the wife of Solicitor General Theodore Olson, who argues President Bush's cases before the Supreme Court. Vice President Dick Cheney was in Washington, and conferred with Bush by telephone from a secure part of the White House, according to presidential spokesman Ari Fleischer. He added that first lady Laura Bush and the president's twin daughters also were safe. In a midafternoon briefing, Bush aide Karen Hughes sought to assure the public that despite the "despicable acts," the government was functioning smoothly. She added that while the New York stock exchanges did not open for the day, the financial system continued to operate, including the Federal Reserve Board. Armed personnel secured the runway at Barksdale Air Force Base when Bush's plane touched down there. During the day, aides said he spoke with New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and New York Gov. George Pataki as well as Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld. "The leadership of the Defense Department is OK. The secretary is OK," Pentagon spokesman Glenn Flood told reporters. Authorities immediately began deploying troops, including a regiment of light infantry, in response to an attack for which they said there had been no advance warning. Officials said two planes had crashed into the World Trade Center, and a third into the Pentagon. A fourth plane crashed 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, and one lawmaker, Rep. James Moran, D-Va., said after a Marine Corps briefing that "it was apparently intended to Camp David," the presidential retreat in the mountains of Maryland. The military denied shooting it down. "We have not shot down any aircraft," Maj. Gen. Larry Arnold, who oversees the defense of continental U.S. airspace from NORAD, said in a statement. Bush and others spoke freely about terrorism being the cause, and already there was speculation about those responsible. One U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there were unspecified indications that Osama bin Laden's organization was responsible. But finally assessing responsibility might be far down the road. In the meantime, there was no attempt to minimize the impact. The military was ordered to "Threat Level Delta," the highest level, at least in the Washington area, according to Air Force Capt. Tatiana Stead at Andrews Air Force Base. "This is the second Pearl Harbor. I don't think that I overstate it," said Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., referring to the attack 60 years ago that surprised the nation's intelligence apparatus and propelled the country into World War II. With Bush away from the capital, his advisers were preparing a list of options, including closing the nation's borders, according to a senior U.S. official. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said it was premature to discuss military options because investigators were still trying to determine who was responsible for the attacks. Away from the Pentagon, unexplained explosions were reported in the vicinity of the State Department and the Capitol. They apparently were no more than sonic booms. A torrent of people rushed from their office buildings throughout the nation's capital, eager to leave a city under siege. The cell phone networks were overloaded, clusters of people sprayed on the sidewalks and at least one suburban school district announced plans to close early. The Pentagon was hit a short while after the World Trade Center was struck. a plane, described by witnesses as a jetliner, made impact in the portion of the building on side opposite from where Rumsfeld's office are located. We are praying for all those that have lost their lives and their loved ones and friends. Retribution needs to be swift and sizeable. It's about time to show the rest of the world what the US is made of and we are not going to take it anymore. I pray that none of our servicemen are placed in harms way. But I would gladly join them if necessary. ------------------ |

I don't even know where to begin. I know some of you will disagree with me but I will be disappointed if we do not declare all-out war on whomever is responsible for this. I know violence is not the answer to everything but you have to draw the line somewhere. I used to be in the navy during the Gulf war era and will go back in a heartbeat if they should ask. Please consider donating blood in the next few days. BTW...I just heard from my broker that the financial markets will be closed tomorrow. I think it might be longer than just tomorrow. God bless America. ------------------ |

Al, I'm glad that your friend is okay. Leon, I hope yours is too. I don't know what the solution or response to this should be. Unfortunately, the U.S. military is not at it's strength and hasn't been for some time. That is a very scary thought in light of today's events. Hopefully, that will change now. |

I went to the local food store to stock up on supplies as deliverys might be slowed down in the next few days. When I came back, my friend was sitting here waiting for me. What a surprise and happy feeling it was to see her, even though I knew earlier that she had made it out. She caught one of the last subways out before transit was stopped. She told me the story of standing outside about a block away from the WTC watching the burning building and seeing people jump with limbs flailing. At that point the plane hit the second building. She was in the front of the building and didnt see the plane hit, just the fireball. She ran for her life as debris rained down to where she was just standing. She described the chaos thruout the city. I took her home and she went to sleep. Imagine, all this death in the name of someone's interpretation of the wishes of GOD. ------------------ |

The plane that crashed here in PA was below 6000 feet when it went over my house. It crashed about 15 miles from here. Everything is shut down here. The only thing flying is the military. Nothing at the crash site except for a huge crater. ------------------ |

BC-TradeCenter-Scene 5thLd-Writethru 09-11 1041 BC-Trade Center-Scene, 5th Ld-Writethru,1041 `New York is crying' Eds: AMs BC-Trade Center Crash By HELEN O'NEILL AP Special Correspondent NEW YORK (AP)-- There were no screams. Just a dark, eerie silence. And the stench of death. "New York is crying," police Officer Tyrone Dux said, unable to contain his own tears after surveying the smoldering rubble that was once the World Trade Center. "It's like nighttime there," he said of the scene in lower Manhattan, which by afternoon was a hive of rescue efforts. "Dark. Frightening." The city looked and felt like a war zone Tuesday. Armed guards patrolled outside government buildings. Mass evacuations sent ash-covered pedestrians streaming across bridges. Ambulances screeched through Manhattan. A city skyline -- and psyche -- were forever scarred. After the initial shock, after the nightmarish scenes of people on fire jumping from buildings, came the rescue. A few blocks away from the World Trade Center, about 120 doctors and people with medical training traveled in a convoy of pickup trucks, ambulances, a dump truck and SUVs toward the wreckage. Their job: To find survivors and try to save them. Paramedics waiting to be sent into the rubble were told that "once the smoke clears, it's going to be massive bodies," according to Brian Stark, an ex-Navy paramedic who volunteered to help. Ad-hoc medical crews formed to accept blood donations. Barbara Kalvig raced to a triage center with a car full of colleagues from the New York Veterinarians Hospital. "We closed the hospital and brought a bunch of doctors and nurses," Kalvig said. "We just drove as far as we could." Nearby, a construction crew hauled two-by-fours and plywood to the emergency teams to be used as makeshift stretchers. Craig Senzon, 29, a neurologist volunteering at the triage center said of rescuers, "We felt a heaviness inside use that none of us have ever felt before." Before rescuers were mobilized, scenes of horror unfolded around the devastated buildings. "Everyone was screaming, crying, running -- cops, people, firefighters, everyone," said Mike Smith, a fire marshal from Queens, recovering at the fountain outside a state courthouse, shortly after the second tower collapsed. As a fireball engulfed the buildings, there was panic. "One minute everyone was casually walking, next there was this huge surge," said investment banker Mark DeAndrea, who works in an office beside the Trade Center. "It seemed like 10,000 people were rushing toward us, running like a herd of gazelles, crying, "Get out, get out!" DeAndrea crouched behind a pillar trying to figure out what to do. "It was so unreal," he said. "People were jumping out of buildings. It was horrifying." Frantically, DeAndrea tried to call his wife, but his cell phone wouldn't work. So he joined the surge heading back toward the ferries to New Jersey. At Pier 11, he said, "Boats were just filling up, taking everyone. Some people were threatening to jump into the water if they couldn't get on." Finally, the overloaded boat pulled away. "It was so scary. Everyone on the boat was just staring at the buildings. And then, as we passed the tip of Manhattan, they were there no more." Other workers from Trade Center offices wandered lower Manhattan in a daze. Looking down West Broadway, brown and black smoke billowed. Ash, two inches deep, covered the streets. Police and firefighters gasped for air as they emerged from the sealed-off area. At least three explosions were heard, perhaps from gas lines. Kenny Johannemann, a janitor, described seeing a man engulfed in flames at One World Trade Center just after the first explosion. He grabbed the man, put the fire out, and dragged him outside. Then Johannemann heard a second explosion -- and saw people jumping from the upper stories of the twin towers. "It was horrendous," Johannemann said. Donald Burns, 34, was being evacuated from a meeting on the 82nd floor of One World Trade Center when saw four severely burned people on the stairwell. "I tried to help them but they didn't want anyone to touch them. The fire had melted their skin. Their clothes were tattered," he said. Boris Ozersky, 47, computer networks analyst, was on the 70th floor of one of the buildings when he felt an explosion rock it. He raced down 70 flights of stairs, and outside, in a mob in front of a nearby hotel. He was trying to calm a panicked women when the building suddenly collapsed. "I just got blown somewhere, and then it was total darkness. We tried to get away, but I was blown to the ground. And I was trying to help this woman, but I couldn't find her in the darkness," Ozersky said. After the dust cleared, he located her. As most people fled the area, others were drawn to it -- desperate for information about friends and relatives who worked there. "I don't know what to do," a weeping Alan Rivera said as he stood behind barricades, hoping for word about his niece, who worked in the Trade Center. "I can't get through to her on the phone. ... No one can tell me anything." Nearby a crowd mobbed a man on a pay-phone, screaming at him to get off the phone so that they could call relatives. Throughout lower Manhattan, rescue workers and police officers wore surgical masks to protect them from the dust. At the city's hospitals, hundreds lined up to give blood, after hospital workers yelled on the streets, "Blood donations! Blood donations!" Thousands fled the city, streaming across the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges on foot, some sobbing, others covered head-to-toe in gray soot and ashes. With no buses, taxis or subways, the throng was left with no way home. "How do I get to Queens?" a woman shouted. "Start walking," a police officer yelled back. Businessmen who'd walked across the Brooklyn Bridge had stripped to the waist, their button-down shirts pressed over their faces. Passing cell phones back and forth when the rare call went through, desperate strangers called to each other: "Can you get out?" A woman pleaded: "Can you call my mother. This is her number."
