Has anyone thought about a reversed hood scope to draw the heat from underneath the hood? Think about it - I definitely have! Fresh air from the grill, through the radiator, past the motor, and where? Right into the exhaust system and the fire wall, and then back into the exhaust. What if you allowed the fresh air that goes over the hood, to draw the hot air from underneath the hood to be exhausted through the hood. Think about it! The trailing edge of the hood, like most every other car, is sealed by a gasket to the fire wall. For those at Woodward, remember the louvers in the hood of the factory test car. I'm far from being an automotive genius, but will more air flow around the engine, also increase better air flow into the engine? Especially since the air intake is under the hood - in ALL the heat that this motor puts out? Food for thought from a not quite so over the hill drag racer. (speaking of potential winter projects?) ------------------ |

T, I've thought about it, but by way of louvers in the hood and side panels. Underhood pressure might also be the cause of the flighty front end at speed. In the old days, we just used to raise the rear of the hood to help flow~thru. One prob is the double thickness side panels and the stiffener in the hood. You'ld be limited to scoop or louver placement. ------------------ |

Amazing huh John???? I think its a combo of the head flow and manipulation of the fuel and timing. Again, this is with only 10 lbs of boost initially, down to 8lbs at the end of the run. Matt wants to put in an electronic waste gate this winter that will allow tailoring of the bypass even more. I keep thinking of your grenede and wonder how much this puppy can take. Did they ever come up with a final diagonosis of what failed in your engine? That would be very interesting. I was just noticed something else. This engine pulls all the way to redline which means I might be able to pull strong all the way through 3rd at the track, and never have to worry about the slip into 4th. ------------------ Yellow is DCOOLEST This message has been edited by butchcee on 09-12-2001 at 06:22 AM |

Right Al, I dont think you will need the gears with this monster. Should be albe to get up in revs thru the traps. I've heard no news on ther gernade as yet. Bottom line would be the drivability of the final product. But man that looks good. Big block power,, ------------------ |

I'll have it back soon. I'm not taking the gears out,(yet) but you might be right John. Matt has put about 60 miles on the car and it seems to drive pretty good according to him. The dyno run was on an 80 deg, 78% humidity day, so maybe even better stuff on a cool day. He took it out last night and said it's awesome. ------------------ |

Well, My Cat is back~took long enough. Heres the scoop- Whipple blower,Heads flowed, headers, cats gutted, Ida management system , 8.5-1 forged pistons. At this time I'm only running 7lbs of boost and making 260 RWHP with about 305 ft lbs of torque. Power is down from other systems with similar boost because of the low compression. This is a safe setting for break-in and is plenty fast for now. With a slight power brake, the tires spin thru most of 1st and punching it from a dig will just barely hold traction.. My plans are for Ida Automotive to put in a puter wastegate and tailor the boost the way I want it adding 2 lbs at a time. The installation isnt bad and considering that the engine was out and back, all is well. The car came back in good condition also. On the down side, this thing is noisy!! Yes Gary, you were right. I am told that the blower whine can be made quiet by installing the stock air cleaner assembly to cut intake resonance. I'll be fooling with that . ON THE ROAD AGAIN ------------------ |

Thanks guys Rich, my main concern now it trying to quiet the intake so I'll try the stock airbox first and draw from behind the side panel. ------------------ |

Big Al, glad to hear you are back up and running. I hope you get it tweaked to your total satisfaction. Too bad you are looking at another couple of months of poor weather. Maybe we will have an early spring. I bet you are chomping at the bit to get it out on a regular basis. ------------------ |

Al - you gotta feel great about finally getting your CAT back. I hope you get some decent weather (no snow) so you can break it in quickly. I see you are thinking about having a computer management system increase boost in steps. What kind of power do you expect to finally reach and are you aiming for a specific ET time or just FAST !! Enjoy - you have earned it waiting this long. Marty ------------------ Driving my Dream |
