Weird problem. I’ve had my Prowler for about 14 months (1999 with 8.5K miles at the time, completely stock) and within the first two weeks it I would get an annoying “dinging” chime that wouldn’t stop shortly after start up. It didn’t always happen. Maybe every 4th or 5th start or so.

Over time I realized if I turn the car off and immediately back on again, the dinging would consistently ding at a faster pace. If I turned the car off and re-started it a third time, the dinging would constantly stop and I could then drive “ding-free.” No warning lights or any abnormal gauge indications, ever.

Over the Summer the noise went away and I thought it had cured itself. Unfortunately, as the weather got cooler (I’m in TX) it started up again. Any ideas on what it might be or how to disable the noise for now? Car drives great and there are no other know issues. The doors, the top, and trunk a properly closed but I’ve slammed each to make sure more than once. The seatbelts are secured. I’ve even “clicked” the passenger’s belt even though no one was sitting in that seat, just in case.

One source of a ding like that is the warning that the trunk lid is not closed completely. I know you said you have made sure it is closed but maybe the warning device itself has a problem. Just a thought. have you checked all the wiring harnesses etc. in the area of the latch?

Do you have runflat tires or regular tires? Were the Tire pressure monitor sensors removed from the rims? Did you check the tire pressure in all tires?

I agree with Steve, air increases in hotter weather in tires.
If air press in tires is close to where sensor goes off, when the temperature warmed up it stopped dinging. It's colder now and tire temps dropped triggering sensor again. It can also stop after your driving awhile because tires heat up when driving.

Thanks for all the quick responses and I think you might be on to something. The tires were replaced at the dealership I bought the car from with non-runflat Toyos. I don't know if there left the sensors in or if they removed them altogether. I'll have my tire shop look into that. One thing though. I don't get a low tire pressure warning light though.

In the above thread you can see how to unplug the tire sense .
If you have ding after that you should be able to eliminate the tire sense as a cause.

Batteries maybe dying one by one in the sensors.

http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/002369.html

Sensor is in the latch it self.

Just in case.
Part number 4865101AA

Cheapest bet would try the tire monitor first unplug it.
If that stops the chime or dinging there you go.

The tire sensors look different than a normal valve. You should be able to look at them and determine if they were re-installed. The bulb may be burned out. I am presuming you made sure there isn't a piece of tape over the light on the dash.
Good luck and let us know what you find.

My thoughts are along the same line as Ed, turn the key on and see if the warning light for low tire lights on the right side of the dash display, if it doesn't light the bulb could be out.

Sounds like classic chime for low tire, so my guess the sensors are in since when warm out it didn't chime.

How often do you check tire pressured? I had a wheel that would loose enough air to turn light on and make chime ring every month in the summer and every time the temp dropped much.

I would suggest anyone getting new tires and want their tire monitoring to work to change the sensors at same time. The batteries were to last about 10 years. So there are some cars out there that are over 20 years old with original tires and would guess sensors too.

I put new sensors in when I got new tires, but also put new wheels on too, so the original sensors are still in my original wheels.

FYI, For those with 97-01 (I think) use a different frequency and the sensors were real expensive, the 02 sensors are cheaper but the module in the dash must be changed also.
