As you probably know, I'm a new owner of a Prowler and am just starting to drive it.
The Prowler is a red 1999, with 2050 miles on it.
Every time I go over a bump or rough pavement, I experience strange sounds that can best be described as "loose screws rattling around".
I realize that the tight suspension will cause the car to vibrate, but I'm questioning whether there is something I can do about this annoying sound.
Your input would be most helpful.

| Gort | The panel below the side panels has been known to rattle. I had to tighten mine up. If you feel below the edge you can feel the screw. Check it out, of course a rattle could be coming from anywhere but check that location. |
| Weezy | You might also want to check the frame holes in which the front struts go down. It's easy to drop tools and nuts and bolts in those holes, I've done it. Keep a telescoping magnet on hand  |

| beachcat | You didn't mention if your top is up or down when you hear it. If the top is up, check the 2 front pins on your top. I noticed both of mine were very loose and rattling around the other day. |

I checked everyone's suggestions, and unfortunately did not find anything.
I took the Prowler out on the road this weekend, and tried to narrow the area down. It is definately coming from an area behind/beside my head, at head level.
I loosened the front and rear fasteners on the convertible roof, examined the area which supports the roof struts, and opened the trunk.
Absolutely nothing there, so the only other place it can be, is behind the rear panel (which contains the rear speaker).
I plan to remove the rear panel when I've got more time.
Am I correct that the rear panel is only held in place by push grommets? |
| georgieboy | Your Kat is 15 years old but with few miles. I'll bet your still driving around on the original run flat tires. The rubber in these tires has all dried out and the tires are hard. Every small bump in the road is magnified through the tires, the wheels and the car. Get some new soft rubber and the whole ride will improve and probably lose the noise. |
| catfish | do you really think that changing tires is going to get rid of a rattle,ill have to admit thats the dumbest answer to a problem ever.why not find the rattle. ------------------

| ed monahan | What is loose in the trunk area? Anything back there that can contact anything is magnified immensely by that huge (lol) open space. The sound comes up along the trunk lid next to the back fender and very close to your ear, where the soft top mechanism folds.
Couple of times I have put a couple of loose wrenches back there and forgot about them until I hit the first bump. Very loud.

| Weezy | I agree with Ed, there's lots of things under the trunk that can come loose, like wires, carpet grommets, the tie downs for the top, etc. that can give off a rattle. quote:

Next, I'm going to test the trunk theory.
The car will be in a parade next week (a quaint celebration in the colony called Canada Day).... catchy name don't you think ???
I will put the top down and secure it in the trunk with ties.....and then we'll see what happens.

By the way, the hard tire can actually CREATE the rattle. It takes something to jar something loose to cause a rattle. |
| Drew | If you cannot find where it's coming from behind you, sounds crazy but check up front, I had a squeak I swore was coming from around or behind the passenger seat, it was suggested that I lube the hood hinges... it worked! From where I thought the sound was surely coming from.... not even close. Good luck! |

Based on the extra input, I'll keep looking and let you know what the final result is.
