The center area with mileage etc. started flickering, then it and the oil, fuel and temp gauges went totally off. The tach, volts, AC, Radio and engine work fine. I have a battery that tests good only about a year old. |

I have two 1999s that have done the same thing. After going through all the wires, fuses and systems, I believe it is the BCM. It’s been more than a year, and the cars are on display in Houston, so I just haven taken the time to deal with them. I do have the purple back here at the house now and need to take it to the dealership to confirm this before trying to get them repaired. Too many other projects. The cars do run and drive, I just don’t drive them much anymore. |

Mine had a capacitor on the back of the instrument cluster that leaked and failed. Caused the same symptoms. Replaced capacitor, fixed it. There was a black glob at the base of the capacitor, so it was easy to find. |

Mine just started doing this two weeks ago! May I ask who diagnosed the capacitor melt down? Was it a Chrysler dealer? |

I removed the cluster and looked at the circuit boards. Kinda lucky it was a visible defect. I did have a Chrysler dealer check it before that, but all they could say was that I needed a new cluster. This message has been edited by ClayD on 08-02-2018 at 12:34 AM |

I took the cluster to a local speedometer shop to get the capacitor replaced. He had no way of testing the cluster, he just verified that the capacitor had failed. I reinstalled the cluster and all is good. Here's another thread with more info and a picture: http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/005603.html This message has been edited by ClayD on 08-02-2018 at 08:24 AM |

Just checking back with Chasgriffith. Have you been able to diagnose the issue yet? |

I plan to take things apart next week and send the part out for repair, hopefully it is the capacitor. I have another project - 1950 F1 pick-up that we just put a new TCI chassis under, gotta get it outta the way. I will update status. Thanks for all the help. |

Is your air bag light on as well? Mine is but nothing comes up on code reader. Otherwise same symptoms. Mine has been doing it off and on for a year but seems to be getting worse. |

I have read about 6 accounts of how easy it is to get the dash off - but my fingers are tired and the dash is still there. I made a tool and still nothing. How many clips are there? I am trying to work near the pillars - are the clips near the pillar to the left and right or straight back toward the windshield. thanks |

I made a quick trip to Northern Tool and picked up the set that Mike Mas mentioned in post on Forum 1 24102. The exact kit he showed was 12 bucks. Came home and in 1 minute the dash was off. THANKS It took very little effort. Pic below shows where I inserted the tool and the tool. Bottom pic shows the clips, inserting the tool was near 2 clips on each side. http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/image_uploads/DDD/dashboardtop.jpg[/img]http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/image_uploads/DDD/dashboardunderside.jpg[/img] |

Just an update, I have the cluster out. No visual of a capacitor fail. I'm checking with the ebay vendor to see if they are still doing the repair. I'm replacing the dash speakers and ordered the MB Quartz. will advise if they fit. |

I've talked with two people in the Dallas area that repair clusters. One guy had worked on a Prowler and found the cluster was ok, but there was a PCM failure. Has anyone seen that??? With the possibility of the PCM going out - I was wondering if it would have made sense to stick the diagnostic tester in before ripping out the cluster - Would that have detected a problem with the PCM? Just a thought. The other repair guy had not worked on Prowlers. I sent an email to the link someone provided (ezelectronics)and they are still doing Prowlers and he said not all the problems are capacitors and capacitor failures are not always visible. |

Most cluster related computer problems are caused by BCM, not PCM. Only a factory scan tool will be able to diagnose Cluster/BCM problems. Did you try performing the cluster self-diagnostic check? This will isolate the cluster and show if cluster is good or problem is somewhere else. It sequences through all gauges and lights. It shows gauges as varies check points, ie, oil high, oil 1/2, oil low, etc, etc. You can plug cluster back in without having to seat cluster fully into dash. Just be careful of odometer reset shaft. |

Just updating. I sent the cluster in. Will advise as soon as I hear back. Replacing the dash speakers, the MB Quart ones will fit, they are a bit taller, I used spacers to keep them off the metal at the bottom. Dash fits but you can't use the stock covers. They sound good, stock ones were blown. |
