I know this has been hashed out in the past. But with a lot of new, fresh members on the site, can we get a feeling for this?

Do you prefer your bumpers on or off?

Are you concerned about the safety aspect, otherwise would take them off?

All 4 off or just the fronts removed?

Any other bumper comments are welcome.

...I have removed the front bumpers on every Prowler (9 I think) I have ever owned

...no safety concerns

...before turn signal kits were available, I mounted the front turn signals inside the grill, looked fine, easy to do

All mine are ON. I'm too lazy to take them off, besides I personally prefer the ON look.

If you want the look, I would say take them off and replace with after market kits that are out there from GaryE or Tom Mills.

If you are worried about safety, then keep them on and paint them with the color of you car.

I took my front ones off, looks awesome.

Good poll Fibertop ... sorry, meant Beachcat ....

Agree with those above that like the designed look of bumpers on, and have both fronts and rears still in place.

Thought about painting them to match the car, but IMO, some colors look better painted than others. So on and grey they stay.

One of the first things I did when I got my Prowler is remove the front bumpers. I couldn't stand the look of them on the front of the car. I also modified the rear bumpers by stripping off the rubber covers, cutting them down in size to make bumperettes and powder coating them black to go with my black and gold theme. There is no safety advantage to having the front bumpers as they are only rated for a 2 and a half mile per hour collision. LOL. The back bumpers do protect the rear of the car to some degree. As for turn signals, I originally went with the Tom Mills kit which is fine, but recently I removed and sold them and replaced them with my own custom version using small LED motorcycle turn signal lights which are much brighter. For me, driving a completely stock car, any car, is too boring. I enjoy customizing them to my own taste. After all, I'm the one who paid for it. LOL.

Front off, never had a worry about safety. If someone backed into it in a parking lot might help on damage. If you are driving and crash it doubt they would help much

Rear painted gloss black with chrome shimmers

Seen a yellow with body color rears and just didn't care for it. IF I took the rears off would be for a set of REAL ROD chrome bumpers.

They front bumpers take away from the lines of the car sticking out so far. The rear not so much since they follow the body lines

Front off and I have no concerns regarding safety. Rears are on but painted to match the car. Before I took the fronts off I also had them painted to match. If you keep them on I think this is a big improvement over them being either stock dull gray or stock dull black. Definitely better than the stock gray on the 99 and prior.

No matter what anyone says...I believe that the ft bumpers DO help in a crash...even if they did 'break off', they will have absorbed some of the 'crash energy'...
Since I'm more worried about my passenger than myself, I will only remove the left ft bumper!

The rear bumpers are actually less critical than the fronts regarding impact. The primary concern expressed by owners is the look with the bumpers in place.

I can tell you that removal of the front bumpers does impact the critical timing of airbag deployment. I have seen the frontal impact events and understand the engineering associated with removal of the bumpers. Chrysler was responsible for meeting Federal safety standards. The bumpers are part of that compliance.

The safety standards have evolved further since Prowler was originally certified. The front bumpers have a purpose as has the magnesium cross car beam and the side Kevlar straps.

And yes, one of CJ's cars has the bumpers removed. They were removed prior to her receiving this car. Her other two cars which were purchased new and still have the bumpers. The '99 has black bumpers while those on the '02 are painted body color.

It's a free country. Thankfully you can still modify your car to your liking. Even this may be coming to an end if you're following current events.

I prefer on.

Question. Several have said no concerns about safety. What else would you be interested in doing that might fall into that catagory? No seat beats? No safety glass? No air bags? No padded dash? Just curious.

I purchased the latest Prowler with the front and rear bumpers off and they did not come with it. I took the front off my last prowler and left the rear on. I still have a set of fronts but no rear. That being said I probably will not put them on. If I decide to I will have them painted. I do worry about someone hitting it in parking lot/slow speed impact but I am extra careful driving it and parking away from other cars. The wrecks I have been in a Prowler (side impact and a rollover) the bumpers would have made no difference but the seatbelt saved me.

LOL!

I have no bumpers. I believe there is a small risk but one I am willing to take to get the look I like.

Bob already posted about my cats, but I would just add that I do prefer the bumpers to be on. I'm not comfortable with the CAL KID car that doesn't have them. However, I cannot change them.

Great post but difficult for me to answer as I'm always back and forth with it... My 1st Inca gold in 02" sold in 04" had bumpers on in Black... Loved the look.. My new Inca Gold purchased this year 2015 still has the bumpers but painted Gold (Front and rear).. I like this look as well... That said, I do also like the look of those that have removed the bumpers in the front... So for me I like all the looks (For the exception of the rears removed)... They all seem to work and look great on the Prowlers...

My Kat already had the bumpers removed at the time I purchased it. Initially my intent was to remove the Mills rear pan and reinstall the rear bumpers but that never happened and I have grown to like it as it is.

I might feel more comfortable having the rear bumpers on due to having been rear ended many years ago. I feel I have more control regarding an accident and potentially avoiding it if I see it unfolding in front of me. Although I spend a great deal of my time checking the rear view mirrors, I am still a bit paranoid.

When I hit that deer a couple years ago at a slow speed, the only damage was to the left fender, the windshield, and a little to the right (passenger side) door where the deer struck the mirror on the way back down.

I imagine if the bumpers were on, the damage may have been worse or possibly made air bags go off which would likely have totaled the car so I was just as happy to repair the car.

Back in '97 when I fist saw the Prowlers, I thought to myself that if I owned one of these, I would remove the bumpers; however, with the purchase of a Black Tie, I think they look appropriate for the color; besides, the front bumper gives me something to sit on at car shows. LOL
