Well the first time we came to the conclusion it was excess flashing from the casting that was not machined off. Well just now had the car in the air to do some pre Power Tour maintenance and look what I found, this is not flashing is not a mark in the frame but a crack in the main frame rail, the weld is fine, I guess the battle starts again. ------------------ |

Bob - What is the year and mileage on that Prowler? I have a bottle of Silver touch up paint I can send you, that should hold you for a few thousand miles at least. Glad to see your not going to let it stop you from going on the Power Tour!

Looks like there will be lots of controversy now. Aluminum air hardens over time. Ever try to bend an old screen door frame? It will usually snap before bending. There was a thread showing concern about the aluminum frame 5 years ago. Not sure if it was here or the PPC. If there is a design problem and DC decides to rectify the problem (fat chance like the wheels)I'm sure they'll consider things like the frame braces lots of us have added and the cars that have been hopped up. It will be interesting to see the outcome. |

Bob, what is the exact location of this pic on the underside? Al C., do you think that the braces have any bearing on this, that they have been tightened up, verses the flex w/o the braces? |

2000 with 40,000 miles. The location is the drivers side main frame rail where the cross member with the motor mounts weld to and just above the jacking pad. The location is so far away from the upper tower where my brace is ( the one I sell ) that I am positive it had no affect in this area. ------------------ This message has been edited by Bob Goetz on 06-02-2005 at 10:13 AM |

Just got off the phone with the shop the DC people told me to call about this and the tech said he can verify the crack upon my visit but can do nothing about it. Once he verifies then they need to make arrangements for a Alcoa rep to inspect and they will make the call on what to do. I wonder if we will be near the Alcoa plant on Power Tour? ------------------ |

Bob, since the location is just above the jack lift pad, do you think it may be from the way you may have over time jacking up the cat, or maybe placing blocks under there while working? / or seems only to be stress fracture only unrelated to jacking? ...and thanks for the reply(location) Rich |

I guess the type of crack will be Alcoas call, I have never jacked the in my shop from the frame jack point, I made a plate that goes on my floor jack and raise it by the control arms 4 inches at a time not to twist the car to the point the locking rod in the steering column jams and place blocks under the tires. So if it was caused by the jacking point I guess that again is a DC problem. The location of the crack really does not bother me for the short term as it is not near the A-arms, worst case they do nothing about it my plan is to grind a V in the crack weld it then grind smooth and cut a plate to go over the top and weld again. ------------------ This message has been edited by Bob Goetz on 06-02-2005 at 12:07 PM |

Bob, I grew up on a farm outside Toledo, Ohio. We sold off parts of the farm in the 70's and the 80's. The Alcoa plant that made the Prowler frame was built on part of that property. If you are anywhere near Toledo (Northwood, Ohio to be exact) you should stop in. Guy |

Alcoa just called me and requested pictures along with the Vin#, the person I spoke with was very helpful and assured me they would get someone out here ASAP. I think he was a bit surprised when I told him I was going on Power Tour with the car so it will have 3000 more miles on it before he gets to look at it. ------------------ |
