I have had one letter published in Car and Driver before....let's see if this one gets printed...I'm still pissed by that blowhard.

Here's what I sent.....

-----------------------------------------------------

"I was very offended by Brock Yates' statement in this month's column.....that if you ask any Plymouth Prowler owner, he/ she would be as embarrassed about their car as an Allante owner would be. Then he went on to compare the sleek Ford Thunderbird to the Pontiac Aztek?!? What is Brock smoking these days?

I have owned a Prowler for over two very happy years. My wife owns a turquoise Thunderbird, so we were both insulted by Brock's ignorant blanket statement that we should be embarrassed to drive those cars. We get more thumbs ups and smiles in our cars than most people would, and owning a Prowler is like instant celebrity. I am still ear to ear with smiles even after driving my Prowler for over two years! How many cars can do that for a person? Both cars win shows too.

For your information Mr. Yates, the Prowler was a "Tribute to the American Hot Rod" and had a PLANNED limited production run of 5 years from it's inception. Only dealer greed kept the car from selling as much as it did. Dealers in 1997 were asking $150,000 for a car with an MSRP of $45,000!

The Ford Thundrbird is a current victim of dealer greed, and dealers still TODAY are asking $55,000 for a car with an MSRP of $38,000. So who's fault is it that these cars didn't sell as well as they should?

Brock should remove his oversized cranium from his rectum and go to www.thunderbirdnest.com and www.prowleronline.com and see how "embarrassed" the respective owners are who post there. Those cars have a fanatic following and a very loyal base of owners. Nobody is embarrassed there. I can't believe these cars were compared to the Aztek!

I'll pull my Prowler next to ANY of Yates' coveted cars and see which car gets the most attention and thumbs up. I may have to rethink renewing my long-time running subscription to Car & Driver if I am subjected to reading elitist trash. And for the record, I am using his book "Cannonball" (which I bought) as kindling for my first winter fire."

Great write up...Do they have a web site/e-mail? It would be great if 3600 members of the POA sent them a negative reply on his comments?

Nice response, but none of them will ever understand the specialty cars....they are missing that gene.

Excellent, please let us know if it gets published. I'd take our kat out for a spin if I was not so embarrassed. LOL

Glad to see that I'm not the only one who sent a letter, but they'll never get published.

In the other thread that started this discussion, I posted Yates' office phone number. I'm betting that he'll take far more notice of calls and messages direct to him than of letters to the editor.

Call Brock up and say "Hi!" - his secretary is very nice.

BTW, my good friend is still having post-traumatic stress syndrome from the pics posted of Yate's monstrosity he calls a street rod...not sure if he'll ever recover fully...

I'll tell you how embarrassing it is to drive a Prowler. I stopped at a public park yesterday to use the restroom, and parked where the car could be seen from the main road while I went in to do my business. The Kat was the only car in the lot.

When I came out, there was a guy with a C5 Vette parked next to the Kat admiring it. As I walked up, he quickly pulled away to avoid being noticed admiring the Kat. Now, who do think was embarrassed?

By the way, I have nothing against Vettes. I think they are really cool. Just not as cool as a Prowler.

here's my embarrasment !

i pulled into the coffee shop and in the corner of the parking lot , away from everyone else, was a newer firebird and a vett in obvious posing positions... at odd angles... the owners standing in front of the cars , posing also. i didn't really see any photographers but it looked as they were waiting for one. i just sat there with my coffee while everyone that drove by pointed, stared, thumbs uped and smiled at me and the kat...a few people came over and commented on the prowler and how great it was to see something different, unique and so damn fast looking ! after about 15 min ... the bird and the vett left, together, probably lookin for another spot.... they were not even getting noticed....

i was very tempted to follow !

Thanks Guys...I've had an oddly successful rate of getting letters / photos printed in magazines though, so don't be surprised to see it in print...

The stupidest thing Yates said in his rant was (paraphrasing) "...that Cadillac Allantes and Plymouth Prowlers were an embarrasment, just ask any owner..." Now why the hell would anyone shell out good money to drive a car that embarrasses them? His statement doesn't even make sense.

Great letter! He is one guy who (like Bob Lutz said) just doesn't "get it"! Never will.....

I am so embarassed about owning a Prowler that I have two of them!

Imagine how embarassed Mike Krehel must be!

If we are so embarrassed about our cars why do we look for reasons to get groups of them together for cruising, and when we do people like the ones at that small town we stopped for lunch at feel the need to come over and tell us how cool they are, the lady from the Drug store down the street called the bar to ask them what kind of cars they are. So the nice lady comes out from behind the bar and ask's me Jerry W, Jerry N and Roman who makes those COOL cars you guys are driving? By the time we were done with here she was convinced the were designed by Franz Cushman, of Cushman Auto Cars in Germany they cost about $100,000 and they only made 500 of them. You had to be there.

97's MSRP was only $39K. The most I have heard ASKED for a 97 from a dealer was $125K, but not saying none asked $150K. The most a 97 sold for new in 97 was $141K at auctions. (2 sold for this amount. Obviously purchased by very embarrassed owners.) Good letter otherwise.

I was originally supposed to get a '97, but before I picked it up someone from Ohio offered to pay $20,000 over list for it. I sold it and waited for the yellow I now have. I must have been really embarassed to wait an additional six months just to get one!

Me too!!!

I'm embarrassed every time I receive a Peoples Choice or Drivers Choice Trophy at a car show I attend.

It also embarrasses me to see the crowds that stand around the Prowler and take pictures.

I was really embarrassed the time that out of all the cars at one show, my Kat was the one on the front page of the next morning's newspaper!

The reason I take the Kat to the shows is not that I expect to win anything, I just like the Hot Rod - Show People atmosphere. It's nice to talk to people about a car most have never seen up close.

God I'm so embarrassed!!!

We all have the same stories about the thumbs up, the waves, and the smiles. Is it possible that Mr. Yates does not know any of this, or is really just trying to be elitest? Being in his profesion, I ask again, is it possible he don't know these things and hasn't heard the stories? What do you guys think?

Hey jimscool, I just got back from my second cruise to Halifax in the last 11 months. Wish I would have known there was a Kat fanatic up there when I was there. The pub crawl that I was on was one of the most fun times I have had on a vacation. Does Brock Yates think thatI should be embarrassed to go to Halifax ? THWH
