For those of you with open car trailers, could you help me with some information?

1. What brand and type of trailer do you use? (i.e. ramps, tilt, etc.)

2. What length trailer do you have? Is that a good length?

3. What tow vehicle do you use? Recommendations?

4. In Dodge trucks, is a Dakota with V-8 5.9 L enough? Ram 1500 V-8 better? Does 4x4 help? Is at least a Ram 2500 (3/4 ton) needed?

Thanks in advance for your help! Home to be at a across-the-country cruise soon...(Canada??!!)

Bob, I have an enclosed and the 2500 is best for it.

an open trailer you can pull no problem with the Dakota/Durango. If you are buying new get the trailer towing package and it will pull open just fine.

IF, i was getting an open I would look at the Texas rollback some of the other owners have. No ramps to deal with. The car is 14', so if you do not have a trailer an 18' would be fine. IF you have a trailer I would go with 22or 23 foot

I have a 24ft enclosed Wells Cargo trailer. Pevious to this trip to the Texas Stampede I had been pulling this with a Ram 1500 SWB Quad Cab. This truck handled the trailer just fine and I could pull at just about any speed I desired, However running 80 mph is only got 8.6 mpg. We just purchase a 2004 Dodge Durango with a Hemi. Going to Texas I was getiing a lot of swaying with the trailer. Power was not a problem but I could only run 65 mph because of the sway. I averaged 10.6 mpg. At the event they suggested I move the car 6 inches forward inside the trailer. I did this for the trip back and again I could run any speed. We ran around 80 mph almost all the way back with no problems. Once passing I even got up to 90 mph. Coming back I averaged 9.6 mpg. On the trip out and back I noticed that for every 10 mph I added to my speed I would lose approx 1 mpg fuel economy with the Hemi.

Diesel would the the best if using open or enclosed, YOU will feel no hills, gas mileage 14-17 towing, diesel is cheaper, no need for 4x4 unless you go to da snow,,,4x2 Diesel in the snow especially is DANGEROUS,,,I will never own a gas tow vehicle again,,, make sure you tell us what you get...

P.S. the diesel is mo money and will have to run many miles to pay for the diesel, but living in the land of hills and tranny eating grades,,,Diesel is the only way to fly.

Diesel is a $5K upgrade. I pull my trailer two or three times a year. I could not justify the upgrade cost. So far neither of my Hemi's has had any problem pulling grades. The Ram has pulled some of the steepest.

If anyone has pictures of their Kat trailers (open or closed) hooked up to their tow vehicle, could you post pix?

Thanks!

Bob, I have an open featherlite. Approximate weight is 1200 or 1300 lbs. I was driving the smaller Durangos at the time so weight was the overriding factor. Your Dakota will pull an open trailer easily if it is a V8. My 5.2 did a good job. My second Durango had a 5.9 and the current '04 has the Hemi. You can see from Rich's post that a Hemi can pull anything and it's lots of fun to drive daily. If you get an open trailer consider the front wind guard to protect the car and an aluminum trailer to keep it light.

Bob, how about the just announced Ram SRT10 Quad Cab. 500 hp and towing capacity of just under 8000. What a machine!! Or the new Ram 2500 Power Wagon - heavy duty with 32" wheels (or something like that)

Ours is a Classic (the choice of IHRA). It is a 21' open trailer with a beavertail with ramps. 21' gives you an 18' deck. We added a blast shield from Texas rollback and it works great for keeping debri from hitting the cat.

We tow with a 2004 Dodge Durango with a 5.7L HEMI engine. We got 12.7 mph with the Durango towing my cat on the trailer which is approximately 4800 lbs. total.

Re: question #4. Depends on terrain. Dakota 5.9 is plenty with an open trailer. Ram 1500 V8 better? Depends on the size of the trailer. 4x4 doesn't necessarily help. Ram 2500 not needed.

Anyone looking for a new open trailer? Seen this model yesterday - 18' Sloan's Kwik Load, nice unit.
2004 model - 7000#GVW- Torsion Axles - under chassis lighting - storage compartments = $3150,,,$400 more if you want a front bug/debris deflector installed. The trailer sure had all the features to tow a Prowler. Longer sizes available.

If interested,,call Dave Sorkow in Tucson, Az 520 - 977 - 4541, and that Larry from Phx. sent you.

We picked up an open 18' trailer and we will put one of these guards on it. Probably get the diamond plate one.

C.J. Your picture shows a load leveling / anti-sway set up with your hitch.

Brand?

Pros & cons?

With my open trailer I used to run it with a 4.0L Ford SportTrac with no problem, other than a sway issue. Now have a 5.3 Chev, piece of cake.

I have a 20-foot Tommys Trailer all aluminum open trailer. I pull it with my 4.7 liter hi-output Dakota quad cab with 3.92 gears. I previously had a 16 foot enclosed trailer that was about at the Dakota's limit for pulling. I had the power (once I started listening WildCat!), but the wind would throw it around some. I went back to an open trailer.

Guy , With a guard that tall go with the clear Plexiglass. You will enjoy pulling the open trailer much more without your rear vision so severely impaired. Not to mention the glare from the Diamond plate coming back at you through you rear window. Shorter guards are not a problem and for them diamond plate is fine and for me preferred. Best of both worlds would be a tall guard with diamond plate on the bottom and Plexiglass on the top.

Rich,

Good point. The guard is about three feet tall and I was looking at this shot thinking it would only reach the bottom of the back windows. I suppose I could get the plexiglass one and put diamond plate on the bottom. Hmmm.

You could just put some duct tape on the bottom of the plexiglass and make some marks on it with a felt tip pen.
Just trying to help. lol

With the shorter guard I can actaully see the rear corners of the trailer in the rear view. That comes in real handy when passing.

Well, I went with the diamond plate and glad I did. I have plenty of vision over and around with the Durango. Here it is mounted on my trailer.

For Ken and anyone else interested, this trailer, minus the rock guard, is a great trailer and is available new from Curtis at C&S Trailers in Clovis. 559-323-8309 These are $2,000 including built in ramps, brakes, wiring of your choice, tax, permanent plates, and delivery to southern CA. The rock guard was an additional $300.

What is the weight of the trailer as it looks to be heavy?
