I would like to make the Texas Stampede. I really don't want to drive my Kat the 1900 miles each way. So i'm thinking of buying a enclosed Trailer. I found one made by Haulmark (airstar)Its $4800 for a 16' and $5000 for a 18'. I measured my Kats and they are about 14' long. I just want you to know i have little towing experience. I just ruined my rear tailgate on my Truck this past summer when i couldn't get the snow mobile trailer off my hitch. Moving my (walk-behind.) I jumped up on the back of the trailer! it scratched the whole gate going up!!So here i am standing on the back of my trailer with the tailgate scratched to hell! If i get off what happens!!!You guessed it i scratched it all the way down!So back to my question, if a prowler is 14'long and i can buy a 16' should i go for the extra 2'. Is it going to be any easier to park, Tow?? I don't care about the few hundred $$$ should i upgrade to a 32" side door or is the 24" enough! upgrade the tires or anything else? Give me your opinions.I going to tow it with my New Supercrew Cab so i have room in the bed for storage. Thanks ------------------ |

CT: I have an 18-foot Haulmark and I wouldn't go any smaller than that. I did not upgrade the side door however, I would recommend that you get the optional door on the other of the trailer. It sure makes it easier to get in and out of the car. I would also recommend the optional panel on the front of the trailer to act as a splash plate. It really gets messed up when hauling in bad weather. |

Chuck, for a big guy like you, I would suggest you not only need to get a wide body trailer, but also the trailer side access door for the drivers side of the vehicle. Other wise the only way you will be able to get in and out of the Prowler is by having the top down and climbing inside. Also to give yourself room to move around to tie the Kat down is to get the 18 foot trailer. With my side access door I can even get in and out with the top up. |

I am a little smaller than you I have the Snake with the top down and climb in no problem. the side door is the way to go. I would go with the 20 its the smallest I would do, Tows better and got more room to move around. What is your tow vehicle????????? Email whealy he might be selling his, its sweet. I have owned 18-46 footer, the longer the more stable, check your tongue weight, critical........ |

With a 16 and only a foot front and rear to balance the trailer CORRECTLY might be impossible. I wouldn't chance it. This message has been edited by Gary C on 01-25-2004 at 01:55 PM |

CT, I have a 24' with a side door, which makes it easier. I have owned my trailer for 12 years, so here are some recomendations I have for you. (1) Buy a trailer with plenty of room for your car.(length and width) Remember, you have to drive it in, then remove your self from the car. Some of the newer trailers have a little more width inside. Trust me, get the width. I am 5'10", 175 lbs, and I have trouble entering and exiting the car inside my trailer. (2) Look for a trailer with narrow or no inside fenders in the trailer. An obsticle to avoid with the Front Prowler fenders and wheels when loading and unloading. (3) Get at least a 22 footer. It will make your tie down proceedure easier. (4) Get heavy duty axels with electric brakes. (5) Get heavy duty coupler( 2& 5/16) (6) If your truck is not a Dually, Get Equalizer hitch. (without the equalizer your trailer will constantly sway side to side and when a Tractor Trailers pass you it will be a nightmare, and you could loose control. (7) Look under the trailer at the floor tie downs. Usually they are only screwed down to the wood floor. If so, put a steel plate under the wood floor at each tie down. (8) Add the electric brake control to your truck, if you do not have it. Jim |

CT, one more thing. Get a trailer where you can center your car over the axels. This will reduce your tonge weight, and will help your tow vehicle ride. Jim |

What about the small trailer setup that basically lifts the towed vehicles front wheels off the ground, similar to what U-Haul will rent? Anybody using something like that? |

Tongue weight is 13 to 15 % of the weight of the trailer loaded. |

I think towing it that way Kat Dreamer puts all of the road trash on the car and all of the miles on 1/2 of the car. I have 20'enclosed that I have been very happy with! Spare tire, yes, equalizer hitch yes, anti sway device, yes, beaver tail, absolutely, clean, dry, protected car when you get there..priceless! |

Chuck; I have a 24' Pace shadow GT and I would not go any shorter because I do not like the way the shorter trailers pull empty or loaded and the long trailer is easier to balance. I would get the following Torsion axles, two roof vents with the rain & wind proof covers. Best tires offered, rubber floor cover, 4ft side door and four 12 volt ceiling lights. I would not buy a bottom of the line trailer and make sure you get it in the wide body format. ------------------ |

With the low profile stance of the Prowler I am not sure a tow dolly would work. Also the Prowler has a front wheel drive transaxle mounted in the rear. So unlike RWD cars I believe this could be hard on the transmission. Seems to me that even in neutral there will be parts moving in the transmission. |

hi chuck, man could i tell you stories about hallmark trailers. i had one for two days(ordered it brand new) and it was a horror story tried to take it back and had a major war with the dealer(i won) next day ordered a car mate trailer, 10,000 lb with many extras and the big extra, the left side opening door. i got a much better deal then the hallmark, and the trailer is made 10 times better. i have hauled my prowler with its trailer, my race cars, and my show cars in it, with with complete peace of mind. i have a good connection for this make now, so if you want to go that route, let me know your bud-sam |

quote: the drive wheels must be off the ground. To tow a Prowler like this would mean backing the car on the ramps. I would bet the damage to the car after one trip would buy a nice enclosed car hauler. The reason you see cars pulled on them 9is because they are front wheel drive. I know a guy that hauled his beautiful `69 Torino back from KY on one of these and had dents in the doors from were it hit turning. |

Chuck. I have 20' enclosed. I would not get one shorter than 20'. I've carried C5 vette and Ford F150 in the trailer. The Prowler fits easy & perfectly in the 20'. However, you may decide to tow something else down the road (besides the prowler). I think the 24' is the most common lenght for the race car guys (gives lots of room for tool boxes and extra parts, supplies... The driver side escape door is a must. The Prowler door actually opens outside the trailer on my setup. Another ease of use is the aluminum drive on ramp extension for rear door (mine is 16") and was something I added after purchasing the trailer. Drive in & out is as easy as pulling into your garage. I had to upgrade my tow vehicle once I decided on enclosed trailer... I have an 01 Dodge 3/4 ton with cummins diesel. The absolute best towing vehicle I've ever had... ------------------ |

A lot of us here have them or had them, the rollbacks are great to show off your ride. I loved the Texas roll back, 5 minutes and ready to go. |

For me an open trailer is ideal,I purchased one a couple of years ago, trailered last year to Tennessee and back and trailered the Viper to an event in Detroit. For the cost and the ease of loading on and off, can't ask for more.Trailer is 16'with another 2 foot extension at the back. |
