I thought it might be good to start a thread for the ones from the East & Midwest. For those heading to Deadwood from PA, OH, IN, MI, IL, or anyplace else on the eastside of the country. Please think about what you want to do, when you want to leave and how many miles you feel comfortable driving each day. We have people along the way that can help with the planning. How many would you want to travel with. The more the people, the better the planning we will need. How many tow rigs can we park in one place? How many are driving their CAT? Do we want to start out Sunday the 1st in Peoria, IL. Hey we can all drive John's cruiser saturday night.LOL I like the idea of Wall Drugs and any car museum. I like the traveling in a CATAVAN style. It is 4 months away but I guess it would be best to get overnight stops planned and hotel reservations in since it will be the week of the 4th. remember the KODAK MOMENTS guess it would not be the same to have tow rigs in the photo's, these might have to wait until Deadwood. ------------------ |

I agree with Larry, the sooner we plan, the better. I respectfully submit for your approval, the use of Peoria as a meeting point. Laddie would have a long driving day(estimating 863 miles from home - and Laddie, you're just South. WAY South!) as will others on Saturday. From Peoria to Sioux City Iowa looks about 448 miles, and can be done in about 6-1/2 hours. It's a good half way point as well. On Monday 7/2, we could do the car museum, the Badlands Nat'l Park, and into Wall Drug with plenty of time to spare and still arrive in Deadwood by 6:00pm. (assuming departure time of 8:00am) By the way, Indy to Peoria is an even three hours from the western side of Indy - about 200 miles. When I met with Larry going to Woodward last year it was a tick over 3-1/2 hours to the eastern end of Indy. Post here any ideas you may want to share, and any sights you may want to see. The more that's done now, the easier the planning can be and a fuller trip for everyone. ------------------ |

How far off the beaten path is "The Field of Dreams" in Iowa? I want to see that sometime but can catch it on the way back if it is way off the path. |

Ed, The "Field of Dreams" house is just west of Dubuque Iowa, where Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin meet. It's about 80 miles north of I-80. This is a very do-able sight to see, since Rt 20 heads east/west from Dubuque straight into Sioux City. Taking this route would be a bit slower than I-80, but as we found with Larry last summer going to Woodward, the "back roads" are far more enjoyable than the interstates. I drive I-80 alot because it's quick. For vacation, why not see the countryside. (and it's beautiful countryside with rolling hills and farms) Rough estimate of mileage from Peoria to the Field of Dreams then onto Sioux City is approximately 516 miles. Roughly 8+ hours drivetime, plus sightseeing time. Very Do-able. I'll add this to the tentative routing plans. Any others ideas? ------------------ This message has been edited by JohnS on 03-06-2001 at 10:16 AM |

I think John's suggestion of Peoria as stopping and grouping site sounds good. We can pick each other on the way there and along the rest of the way as well. Having made trips alone to CAAP, Woodward, Cruisin the Coast and Grand Canyon alone(single car) I'm anxious to try travelling with as many units as possible. Only want to get into Deadwood with a little time and energy left to clean up the Kat after the cross-country drive. As a side note, everyone needs to make sure they have Talkabout250 or better FRS radio and pack of batteries so we can easily communicate along the way. (Found my best price at Wal-mart.) ------------------ |

John, If most people are not interested in Field of Dreams, I would suggest we skip it. I want to see it but only if the majority wants to. I can see it some other time if it is not of interest. |

Larry, they filmed that portion of the movie on a real farm in Iowa. They were going to return it to a corn field but the public interest was so great that they left it the way it was for the movie. I don't know if it is paved all of the way. I haven't visited the web site for over a year. I think it is www.fieldofdreamsmoviesite.com. I will give that a try. It is a pretty neat site. I loved the movie and would like to see the field and farm, etc. I can't believe that you don't TOTALLY believe me, Larry!! Would I lie? Alley Cat is the only one that ever misleads anyone. Yes Larry, It's a real place. I've been there before. I even bought a coffee mug there with the heat sensitive sides that disappear when a hot liquid is in the mug. It looks like stalks of corn until you pour in the coffee - then the baseball players appear as the corn disappears. Pretty neat! As far as details, the place looked just like in the movie. As I recall, the roads were paved except for the last 100 feet or so. Next time I'm in that area I'll scoot over there and check it out. Also, there is a model company in Dyersville Iowa, Ertl I believe, but they may be closed on Sundays. I'll check that as well. They have a HUGE customer service/sales room. Don't they make a Prowler model? (I can see small trunks filling up fast...) Prices were far below retail when I was there a couple years ago. Ed, It's not that far out of the way, and it does offer an alternate (better?) route to Sioux City via Rt 20. One of my travel programs also lists a "scenic route" heading further north into southern Minnesota, but I think we would need an extra day for that one. It goes through Minn. and North Dakota, dropping south at the western edge of the Dakotas. I'll look into this one again to refresh my memory, but I recall it was a seriously longer drive. How does everyone else feel about the Field Of Dreams visit? ------------------ |

Rough plans for Sunday 7/01/01 drive out of Peoria: Head out to "Field of Dreams" in Iowa, (possible stop at Ertl Model Co. IF they are open) then head west on Rt.20 in Iowa to Sioux City. Approximately 500 miles, and with a 2 hour stop-over at Field of dreams, we should be at the hotel with plenty of daylight left to clean up the Prowlers. (Leaving at 8am, we should be able to make Sioux City by 7pm) Monday 7/02/01 from Sioux City to Deadwood, a possible --- From the "For What It's Worth Dept" --- Lastly, I am planning on continuing West after Deadwood ------------------ |

Opps, I shoulda checked first... The Nat'l Parks Pass does NOT apply to Mt. Rushmore. Near Deadwood are Wind Cave and Jewel Cave. They offer different levels of visiting and "touring" of these caves. You can check out other Nat'l Parks at http://www.nps.gov/parks.html ------------------ |

Who is in charge of this Cat a van? I am not, don't want to be and am not volunteering but someone needs to step up and take charge so we can get our acts together soon. Dave Mills is going to Columbus to meet up with Steve and then drive to someplace in Indy where we (Ohio People) will meet Wildcat and the Indiana people and then on to Peoria, as I understand it. Are we going to Field of Dreams? Let's make some final plans soon. Is anyone else from Cincinnati going? Who wants to be the road boss of this expedition. |

Hey Ed, I thought this thread was Wildcat's! Actually, it would be very easy to co-ordinate from Indy or Peoria. If no one steps up, I'll take the lead from here. Perhaps the best first step is that we get a count on who all will be coming through Indy and Peoria. As previously mentioned, arrive Saturday sometime (June 30th) in Peoria, IL. and depart for FIELD OF DREAMS on Sunday morning. I already have routes made out from Peoria, but would rather have those coming through this way to look at a couple maps and see if there is anything on anyone's agenda we can see & do. (See previous posts for rough tentative plans.) DavidN, can you have Erica contact her folks for an idea on a place to spend Sunday night in Sioux City? If anyone is interested in joining the Ohio, Indiana, and IL travelers, please post an updated note here so we can get an idea of hotel requirements and any travel ideas you may have. We're only six weeks away from Crazy Horse. How time flies! ------------------ |

John, If you are the leader we won't get lost (GPS). Sandy and myself will be accompanied by Dale and Karen, so we need two rooms (one for me and Dale and one for Karen and Sandy) lol. We finally got our act together as what we are doing here in Cincy. Who else is coming. I hope we can hook up with David N and Paul, as well as Laddie and a whole bunch of others. |
