At the Las Vegas event someone wanted some of Dick's caps but they would not work on his trailer. I know they have worked on other trailers but I tried two diff. caps on this one and they didn't fit.
Someone recently posted pics about a different axle set up on their trailer so some of the trailers may be different.
I would take one off your car and try it on the trailer before screwing them up.

Good to know Ed, I thought they were all the same.

Prior to that I thought they were all the same, also.
Also, Dick says there are several different variations of the caps. They are diff. colored plastic for one thing.

They are never screwed up doing the magnet mod. The magnet does not interfere with any other operation.

Again, I know of folks who lost center caps with the magnet mod. I won't give their names, if they want to post, they can.
If you don't use the correct adhesive you can lose one, for sure. If you don't prep it correctly, you can lose one.
If you do it correctly it will work, I am sure. You posted you had to "fit" one by bending and/or flexing it.

I know of some who have trouble with the Dick fix also.

But that has nothing to do with whether the magnet mod will work on the trailer. Doing the magnet mod on a new or broken center cap will not "screw it up" in any way.

The ONE center cap I had an issue with was warped, probably from heat damage and had the thinner magnet that was used in the prototype. The final, thicker magnet has no problems pulling in the cap. Ask anyone how it sucks it right in.

If you don't prep it correctly, if you use the wrong type of adhesive, it will indeed be screwed up. Trailer or car.

Will it screw it up because of the magnet coming free and bouncing around inside the cap?

Trust me, those magnets will not bounce around even it they did come loose as long as you center hub made of steel is still on the car. You have to be careful handling them because they will pinch your fingers. These are not the magnets you played with as a kid.

The magnet will stick to the car. The question is will the magnet remain stuck to center cap. If you don't prep the cap and use the correct adhesive, you could lose the cap.
If you put the magnet on the center cap and it doesn't work on YOUR trailer, you will be out of luck. That is why I said to take a center cap off of your car to make sure it will work, FIRST.
The trailers are not all the same. There were different wheels and center caps on the trailers apparently. Some trailers had hub caps.

Padroo, you make an excellent point! Even if it separates, they aren't going anywhere. I'll be installing mine tomorrow.. Extra peace of mind

Thx

Good to know Ed. Many have mentioned two-part epoxy which is what I am going to use. I'm also going to take my Dremmel to the inside of the cap to help the epoxy hold better. Is it necessary to scuff up the magnet surface as well?

Thanks for the useful info!

It's a no-brainer folks.

Scuff up the surface of the cap and use a 5 minute, 2 part epoxy with the recommended magnet and it's done.

Simple as pie. Don't listen to the fear mongers. This mod could not be any simpler.

I agree, if Beachie can do it, most anyone can.
I wasn't throwing fear into anyone. I guess it was a stupid idea to tell him to try it on his trailer to make sure they were the same. I realize that is very time consuming and expensive to remove a center cap from the car and try it on the trailer first.
I then told him to properly prep and use the right adhesive, again throwing FEAR into him.

I started this thread because YOU trashed the first one. Now you are trying to trash this one also.

We all get it that this mod has cut into the sales of you and your buddy's product. But sometimes something better comes along and you will just have to live with it.

Your snide comments and remarks are glaringly biased and transparent. It's as plain as the nose on your face.

You already brought up the issue of the warped cap but you decided it needed to be discussed again.

You already brought up the issue that someone allegedly had lost a cap (AND urged them to post about it) but you decided it needed to be highlighted again.

The base prep has already been discussed in this thread, by me, but you decided it needed to be brought up again, insinuating that this was a more difficult mod than one might think.

I don't go on your thread, trying to cause concern in peoples minds. So please stay the hell off this one.

Yes, you can lightly sand the surface of the magnet as an extra measure.

For now, giving this a try on the one cap I have that has broken tabs.

Last question - has anyone who has done this had issues with pulling the caps back off the car? With such a strong magnet, are you finding the caps are being strained a lot when trying to pry them from the wheel?

Thanks

Weezy, don't worry, that is not a concern. Just try it and you will be impressed.

Thanks for this. I ordered the magnets. I will be lightly sanding the magnet and the cap then laying down JB weld 2 part epoxy

I did it to my driver's side front wheel, the only cap that was loose and had missing tabs. I have since driven it to Tucson, about 85 miles each way at 75-80 miles per hour and no problems. To be fair, I bought the car in Tucson and drove it home to Chandler, same distance.. and the loose one hadn't come off. Either way, extra piece of mind for $20 for all 4 magnets. I doubt it will come off - I also used the same epoxy to adhere the magnet and when I put it up to the wheel, that sucker jumped in to place in a hurry!

I am excited to try this out. It is cheap insurance to make sure my caps don't come off ever. Thanks again.
