To save me doing the same, what was the distance from axle to cap?

the 1/4" thick magnets will work well for them. |

A friend just told me a quicker easier way to measure and yes 1/4" would be just right. Here's a thought - 1/8" magnets are a lot lot cheaper than 1/4" magnets, so would two 1/8" magnets attached to each other work as well? |

that would be experimental. But adding another surface might not be good. You could call K&J and ask. 1-888-SHOP-KJM (1-888-746-7556) or 215-766-8055 |

The blurbs that come with the magnets say to make the magnets work harder - ie maximize attraction - place a ferromagnetic backing plate against one side. They sell ferromagnetic cups designed to hold the magnets and accomplish this. What I found is that a 1/8" thick magnet placed in it's cup gives a thickness of 1/4" - just what is needed. I bought 3/4" diameter magnets that are 1/8" thick and when the magnet is placed in the cup it is near impossible to get it out. The cost of this spec of magnet was only $8.60 for a package of 5 magnets plus $1.40 each for the cups. That works out to $3.12 per wheel. While I have not yet glued them in place, the incredible strength of these magnets should have no problem holding the very light center caps in place. The magnets were available at Lee Valley Tools which I believe has outlets in the US as well as Canada. |

Sounds good. Let us know how they hold. You won't know until you try it. I would still try one of the bigger magnets to compare. You would hate to lose a cap. |

If you have ever played with magnets and I would assume most kids did these are so strong they will bring tears to your eyes if you pinch a finger with one. I had my wheel off the other day and the magnets pull the center cap in tight. |

Well I tried the 1/8" magnets in their cup holders and they are just a little too thick to work. I am now going to try two glued directly to the caps and two more with a washer backing the magnet. I will test them out next weekend when I have a 700 mile trip and see how they do. As a side note when I tested one on a wheel the magnet came off the cap. I think the epoxy glue had not been properly mixed. |

I drove 695 miles on the weekend and didn't lose any wheel caps. I did hit a couple of pretty good potholes too, so I think that was a good test. One wheel has a single 1/8" thick magnet glued to the cap and the other three have a magnet with a backing washer glued to the wheel cap. I will now glue magnets with washer backings to the rest of my wheel caps. It looks like the trailers will require a little more thickness, so I will try two washers if I cannot find a thicker washer the same diameter. I removed the spring ring in my caps, but I left any of the plastic tabs that had not already broken off. They seem to help the caps position a little better than one with no tabs. |

Thanks for this great idea. I installed my magnets this weekend. The hardest part was getting the magnets apart. they are shipped with a 1/4 nylon between them and its still a bitch to get them apart. But now my center caps jump outa my hand and in place as soon as I get close. Great idea! |

Yes please be careful when separating the magnets people. They can draw blood if you get a pinch. Also, just a reminder to prep the surface of the cap so that the epoxy can touch some of the bare plastic and even though some say "5 minute epoxy" I would wait 24 hrs or so to be sure it's cured. Great description Bob about jumping out of your hand. That's exactly what they do! |

Just posting this to advise that I do not sell the magnets or make the repairs. This is a do-it-yourself mod and is very simple to do. I am happy to walk you through it if you have problems. Here is where you get the magnets and the part number: http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=DX44-N52 If you really feel you cannot do it I will help you out but really it is so simple. |

I noticed the maximum operating temperature is 176 degrees for the magnets. I assume the wheel hub doesn't get that hot to be a concern? |

Someone, maybe padroo, determined that this mod works for trailers too. |
