I was told about this post last night from a fellow ProwlerOnline member. He advised me to look up an old post by Alley Cat concerning the convertible top that hopefully would prevent my top from getting a tear in it. I located the post below, bought the material needed for $1.30 and installed the washer tubing in about 2 minutes.

Thanks Alley Cat for the post and it looks like this will prevent my top from getting any holes in it.

Alley Cat Old Post:

With your top UP, and rear window section folded up, follow the Electric Rear Window Defrost wire to where it is tied on top frame with tie-strap. BELOW that point, you will see a small section of the top frame construction that has a small L shaped piece of unprotected metal exposed - this is where the problem is. This point is where the fabric is wearing against the top WHEN lowering and putting top UP. When the top is fully UP and latched, you can put your fingers between the frame and the fabric and feel 1 1/2 inches of clearance. So you conclude this area is NOT the problem, BUT, it does touch and rub when lowering down and lifting the top up - I think it may even be rubbing that spot when the top is down and in the craddle space.

My fix - buy a foot of windshield washer tubing ( 1/8th" ).
Press on this tubing over that exposed small metal piece and leave another 1/2" extra off that point, so you will use about one inch of tubing. Even though most of you are having this problem on passenger side, do both right and left sides now. I'm hoping this will correct the problem and the rest of us will not have this happen to us - its a nightmare of a problem.

Thats a great idea.. Unfortunately its too late for me. I have a real small hole in that spot. Its about an 1/8 of an inch. I guess when that happens, there is nothing you can do but replace the top, right??

thank you for uprooting this oldie but goodie for us newbies. I did it today, and even with 4500 miles on my 99, I could see the marks on the inside of the top you are talking about.

Here is the detailed thread information post:
http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000116.html

Another good tip,,,use a tire dressing sponge to space the soft top material away from the latch mechanism,,,another problem spot where a hole or snag can start. An ounce of prevention goes a long way,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Thanks Howard for bringing this subject up again. We have many new owners that maybe this information can save them future problems with their tops. Many before them have paid the price to learn.

Alley Cat. Thanks for posting the pictures for everyone to see where the metal post is located. I also think everyone should look at your black deck lid protector on your car. I just installed a clear deck protector the other day which took about 20 minutes. This will prevent my deck lid from getting scratched by the convertible top.

The protector can be ordered from Z Graphics 419-476-8193 Cost Shipped %59.90.

I am now off to the auto store to buy an official Alley Cat Convertible Top Protector Sponge.

Thanks.

Howard

Hey guys,,,can I offer another deck lid protector [like the one in my picture above]?

3M - high quality product - from one of our own Prowler owner,,, who makes them and sells them as a side hobby.

Contact Paul - tectrum@wi.rr.com
He lives in Cedarburg, WI

He doesn't check his email everyday, so give him some time to answer your questions and pricing. I believe you can save some $$$ money on his DekLidProtector item over the other one listed here above. Paul might also be able to get you color choices? I've bought two from him,,,,and you will like his product

You can get ANY color you like - including metallics, pearls, shade-shifting, you name it. Just buy 5' of automotive graphics vinyl from any sign shop and do it yourself following the directions at: http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/Forum9/HTML/001065.html

The prowler graphic and lettering is readily available here by searching, not at all difficult to cut by hand.

Here's a partial repost:

Those are awesome deck lids guys. Thanks for the tips and I will get it done and post pics when I figure out how to do it. I think I will go with black as it would match the rear fender protectors.

Sure Geno,,,from Catfish Bruggeman,,,,find a body shop to save you a hunk of grill from a damaged GMC Denali SUV. Make a pattern from cardboard,,,,cut two pieces out of the grill section,,trim with dremel tool to fit. I added some plastic tubing around the outside of it to prevent the leather from getting cut.

Also under the trunk carpet you will see two plastic wire looms(?) that can rub against the top when is down in trunk . It is said that top will vibrate and rub against these if not strapped down and secured . I added more padding between plastic and carpet and always secure the top when down.

I will post pics when I get back home.

Glad to have the info about the top. Mine was showing at the pins with rubber hose. Too late for the latch trick it is thin there and under the bulge for the top release under the trunk lid next to it. Someone closed trunk on back of the top below back glass and cut it with latch loop. Outside still looks good.It don't leak yet but new top coming in April
