Looking to see if anyone has tried a solid pulley on there alternator instead of the pulley clutch. I told that the clutches were installed to elimatate engine vibration.
It seems like the factory clutches are starting to have problems. Mine is making a noise after I turn the engine off (15k miles). Seems like it might be a age issue rather that a mileage issue. Cost for a solid pulley is about $25.00, a clutch pulley is about $100.00.

Mat, be the guinea pig. Give it a try and report back. See if you get any vibrations.

No problem using the solid pulley. The clutch pulley was installed to minimize a noise/vibration at a specific RPM and at shut down. The early cars don't have one and run just fine.

I've been running the solid pulley for a few years, no issues at all.

Hey Guys:

Just finished installing new alternator (without clutch). Seems to be noisier than old one. Have 2000 with 14,000 miles. While I have the Prowler manualI can tell you DO NOT follow all that's listed. You DO NOT need to remove the frame rail, the headlight assembly. Loosen the power steering reservoir and let it hang. Took about 2 hours which for me is good since it was my first Prowler repair effort. Glad to answer question. Will keep you regarding noise issue.

you sure its the alt.and not the belts.if not set to proper belt tension they will make noise.did you use a belt tension gauge,i doubt that you did.set to 150 ft.lbs.since you have run it with wrong tension, change the belts and use a tension gauge.2 gauges ,one for each belt.make sure its the belts and not the tensioner making noise.once run with wrong tension they will make noise.

a while back, didnt feel like changing the belts myself ,so took to a indepedent repair shop to have them do it.loaned them my belt tenson gauges and wrote down spec.settings to set to.explained to them tension was critical on a 3.5 motor.when done, picked up car.very next day started car and could already hear the belts starting to make noise.took my tension gauge and cked belt tension, not even close to specs.needless to say i was pissed
,called owner and took back and they replaced belts again and finally got the message that the tension needed to be set to correct ft. lbs.fixed at there expense.never took my car back there again.

I tackled this job because I didn't trust ANY of the local Mopar dealers. Several do not have prowler mechanics. None of the independent shops were willing to do it. I let it idle for a moment or so and shut it down after hearing the noise. Thanks for the recommendation.

I was just in Greensboro two weeks ago to see my son and find a branch office space. I could have come over and watched LOL

Coming back down this weekend. Our new shop is off 40 on Gilford College road right at the off ramp.

Would love to meet you. I should be around this weekend at least part of the time. The 2000 Prowler Service manuals say tension is 190lbs +_ 10 lbs on a new serpentine, 150 on a used one. We are at 182 and I am going to recheck tomorrow. Send me a PM if you should have a chance to meet/

If any member needs a new Alternator or the clutch assembly, You can order an alternator from Pep Boys. The new unit comes with a new clutch. They are selling for $ 170.00 and takes a few days to order. If you are a Pep Boys member, They send you E Mails every 2 weeks with 20% to 25 % off your purchase when you order online. I just installed a new alternator on Gary Empfields Prowler and it took about 4 days to come in. The one good thing about getting the unit from Pep Boys is the clutch & the alternator come with a LIFE TIME warranty. If you do not have a Pep Boys near you, Go to their website & order it. They will ship it right to you. Just remember , the discount can only be used when ordering ONLINE.

PM or call Gary at Prowler Products as he has the box with the part number on it. I remember seeing the number on the box but didn't pay to much attention to it , I know Gary ordered it for a 2001 Prowler. It is the same as the 2000 year. I do not know for sure , but I believe all Prowlers use the same one. I am sure Gary can help you out on this one. You cant beat the warranty on their starters & alternators. I have bought many of their products over the years and they hold up very well.

I don't have the number. Gary ordered his for a 2001 Prowler. They do have a listing for it in their catalog. Best to contact Gary at prowler products as he has the box & receipt with the exact number. Best buy for the buck as it comes with a lifetime warranty which includes the clutch assembly.
