Tom,

I was looking at planetaries today and there are some good used parts out there fairly cheap.
Going to look at the broken bits tomorrow morning.

Engineers were mentioned a few replies back. This explanation is out of context but describes my experience. My dad was a great engineer. He died in 1997 at age 59 unfortunately. Over the last 13 yrs I developed a product that will go into production this year, finally. Cant say what it is right now, but I went through hell with engineers, to the point I lost all faith in them awhile back. Briefly, this idea began in my shop and was built and rebuilt many times until the basic design worked, although not well. We hired an engineer at great expense to help and some progress was made but still wasn't reliable and had issues. We paid lots of money to a number of engineers and got delays, excuses, and little of any use. When the design finally gelled it was way too expensive to manufacture (I was in the manufacturing bizz 1999-2007). Finally after years of struggles, problems, broken parts, despair, testing and head-scratching I had something that worked and solved the problems myself. Despite not being an engineer, I learned to make sketches of parts 2d and 3d on paper. We needed them drawn up in CAD and 3d modeled based on the new manufacturing methods we intended to use. An engineer was hired to do this. A year+ went by and the parts passed stress analysis but the CAD dwgs and 3d models had so many errors and none of them seemed to be able to deliver a final dwg we could trust to have no errors. Things dragged on and on-for years and it seemed like a nightmare. We finally found a foundry who took interest and had a motivated staff and engineers. They moved quickly. After going through this whole ordeal and based on some experience in aviation, I'm not so certain engineers as a whole are capable of much lately, with a few notable exceptions. There is an inclination within to risk installing a larger oil cooler/fan combo and spin-on external filter rather than trusting factory engineers to get it all right.

Like most professions there's the Good, Bad and Ugly.

I can say I've met all of the above.

If you search this site, you'll see none to slim Transmission Overheating problems. Input/output sensor, yes. 4th gear O/D issues, yes.

Prowler trans cooler is a good design and gets the job done. If there's a weakness, it's location can be subject to foreign objects striking it. But, very rare.

I personally would not invest in redesigning/refitting/ replumbing a new trans cooling system.

"If it An't broke, don't fix it."

PS... Check to make sure trans oil cooler fan is operative.
Replace cooler bypass valve.
Make sure all valves in valve body assembly move freely and bores are not worn.
Solenoid Switch Valve and end plugs are not sticking.

Good advice and makes sense. I'll pass it on.
Looks like I will need both planets. The amount of metal shavings in it all was mind-blowing. I've seen aircraft and car engines with that much metal after a blow up. But the planets are chewed up in an awful way. Now I'm doubting reusing the valve body, torque converter and oil cooler. They have a special machine to flush the cooler, but I am nervous about it still having metal in it after the flush.
What do you think?
I did find 62583A A606 5 gear planet set.

The 4 or 5 gear planet interchangeability is confusing.

Trans shop needs to find root cause of failure. With that much metal floating around something else failed.

How are the clutch packs? Oil pump? Broken snap rings?

Never reuse a torque convert after a failure. Rebuilt ones are fine.

Trans shop needs to evaluate condition of valve body and make a decision as to whether to replace with a rebuilt one.

Any reputable shop will have a cooler flushing machine, even if homemade. After one or more flushes your good to go.

5 gear planetary I believe was upgraded in later year Chryslers products, not Prowlers. Your shop can determine if your trans
can be upgraded without replacing to many other parts.
It's been a long while since I rebuild trans at my uncle's shop, so I'm going by memory.

4 gear planets have worked just fine in Prowlers.

Why yours failed still needs to be determined.

Make sure you get a decent warranty from shop. Drain trans fluid and replace filter after a few hundred miles on rebuilt trans.

BTW... How many miles on car and what year?
