Looks like North Texas is going to get a good chunk too. This should put the size of the storm into perspective for everyone. This is the latest info I have for the North Texas area. ANDERSON-BELL-BOSQUE-COLLIN-COMANCHE-COOKE-CORYELL-DALLAS-DELTA- DENTON-EASTLAND-ELLIS-ERATH-FALLS-FANNIN-FREESTONE-GRAYSON-HAMILTON- HENDERSON-HILL-HOOD-HOPKINS-HUNT-JACK-JOHNSON-KAUFMAN-LAMAR-LAMPASAS- LEON-LIMESTONE-MCLENNAN-MILAM-MILLS-MONTAGUE-NAVARRO-PALO PINTO- PARKER-RAINS-ROBERTSON-ROCKWALL-SOMERVELL-STEPHENS-TARRANT-VAN ZANDT- WISE-YOUNG- 525 PM CDT WED SEP 21 2005 ...EFFECTS FROM MAJOR HURRICANE RITA EXPECTED ACROSS NORTH TEXAS... HURRICANE RITA IS EXPECTED TO MAKE LANDFALL ALONG THE UPPER AND MIDDLE TEXAS GULF COAST PRIOR TO SUNRISE ON SATURDAY. RITA HAS INTENSIFIED TO A CATEGORY 5 STORM ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON SCALE THIS AFTERNOON AND AT 898 MB NOW HAS THE THIRD LOWEST ATLANTIC STORM CENTRAL PRESSURE EVER. FORTUNATELY THE HURRICANE SHOULD WEAKEN SLIGHTLY BEFORE MAKING LANDFALL...BUT IS STILL EXPECTED TO BE A DANGEROUS CATEGORY 4 STORM. AFTER THE STORM MAKES LANDFALL...THE HURRICANE SHOULD WEAKEN AS IT MOVES INLAND. THE LATEST FORECAST TRACK FROM THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER WOULD BRING THE WEAKENING HURRICANE NORTH TO NEAR HEARNE SATURDAY NIGHT AND NEAR DALLAS AFTER SUNRISE SUNDAY. MODELS ARE BEGINNING TO DIVERGE IN THEIR SOLUTIONS...AND THERE IS NOW MORE UNCERTAINTY IN RITA/S TRACK AND TIMING. THE RIDGE OVER TEXAS THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY EXPECTED TO WEAKEN SEEMS TO BE STRONGER THAN THE MODELS EXPECTED...AND THIS MAY IMPACT RITA/S TIMING AND LOCATION. IN NORTH TEXAS AS THE STORM APPROACHES WE EXPECT THE FOLLOWING EFFECTS: 1. HEAVY RAINFALL AND FLOODING. 6 TO 10 INCHES...WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS WILL BE POSSIBLE MAINLY ALONG AND EAST OF THE I-35 CORRIDOR BEGINNING LATE SATURDAY IN THE SOUTH AND CONTINUING THROUGH THE WEEKEND. WESTERN COUNTIES MAY SEE FROM 2 TO 6 INCHES OF RAIN AS WELL...AND MORE IS POSSIBLE IF RITA/S PATH PROVES FARTHER WEST THAN THE CURRENT FORECAST. EVEN THOUGH THERE HAS BEEN A DROUGHT IN MUCH OF NORTH TEXAS...TOO MUCH RAIN LIKELY WILL FALL IN TOO SHORT A TIME TO ALLOW SOILS TO SOAK UP THE RAINFALL. THUS...FLASH FLOODING MAY RESULT. A FLASH FLOOD WATCH WILL LIKELY BE ISSUED LATER FOR THIS WEEKEND. SHOULD RITA STALL OR SLOW SIGNIFICANTLY IN NORTH TEXAS...A WORST CASE SCENARIO...WELL OVER A FOOT OF RAIN MAY ACCUMULATE IN SOME AREAS. 2. STRONG WINDS. EXPECT 40 TO 60 MPH SUSTAINED WINDS...WITH HIGHER GUSTS IN SQUALLS...SOUTH OF A LINE FROM LAMPASAS...TO HILLSBORO...TO ATHENS SATURDAY EVENING INTO THE NIGHT. THESE WINDS MAY BE STRONG ENOUGH TO KNOCK DOWN TREES...POWER LINES AND CAUSE LOCALIZED MINOR STRUCTURAL DAMAGE. RESIDENTS SHOULD PREPARE FOR INTERRUPTIONS IN POWER SERVICE. ALSO REMEMBER...MOBILE HOMES OFTEN ROLL OVER DURING PERIODS OF HIGH WINDS AND CAN EASILY BE DAMAGED BY FALLING TREES. WINDS SHOULD TAPER OFF TO 30 TO 40 MPH SUNDAY MORNING AS RITA CONTINUES TO WEAKEN...BUT THESE WINDS WILL LIKELY BE FELT OVER MOST OF NORTH TEXAS. RESIDENTS ACROSS ALL OF NORTH TEXAS SHOULD SECURE SMALL AND LIGHTWEIGHT OUTDOOR OBJECTS. 3. A FEW TORNADOES. AS WITH ALL LANDFALLING HURRICANES...ISOLATED TORNADOES WILL BE POSSIBLE. THIS WILL BE MOST LIKELY ALONG AND TO THE EAST OF THE INTERSTATE 35 CORRIDOR. 4. TRAVEL PROBLEMS. INCREASED TRAFFIC ON INTERSTATES AS PEOPLE EVACUATE FROM THE HURRICANE. WET ROADS...HEAVY RAINFALL AND INCREASED TRAFFIC COULD LEAD TO DELAYS AND ACCIDENTS. SOME AIRLINE DELAYS WILL BE POSSIBLE. ALLOW EXTRA TIME TO REACH YOUR DESTINATIONS THIS WEEKEND. DISSIPATING HURRICANES HAVE MOVED ACROSS NORTH TEXAS MANY TIMES IN THE PAST...TYPICALLY WITH SOME WIND DAMAGE AND FLASH FLOODING AS WELL AS RIVER FLOODING. RESIDENTS AND THOSE PLANNING TRAVEL ACROSS NORTH TEXAS THIS WEEKEND SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR THIS SYSTEM AND STAY TUNED TO THE LATEST WEATHER INFORMATION. CNN today , german edition Rita is the third most intensice storm ever , hit the USA Hurricane Rita's winds were at 180 mph today as it spun closer to the Texas coast -- where it is projected to make landfall early Saturday -- and as thousands of residents began streaming from the Gulf Coast. The storm, which now is history's third most intense, "could be worse than Katrina," which devastated southeast Louisiana and coastal Mississippi a little over three weeks ago, said Max Mayfield, director of the National Hurricane Center. |

well, Tim and I are staying at our body shop here in the city of South Houston. We have 10 of our personal cars here that Tim is worried about. We boarded up our home in Pearland and left last night. We really hope we have a home to come home to I was very upset leaving our home last night. We have plenty of food and water here at the shop and we are hoping for the best. Pray for us and all others here in south Texas. |

Teri - You'll be in our thoughts and prayers. I hope you two are making the right decision? I know the cars are important,,,,but when they are talking about 175 mph winds and water coming in,,,,I'm thinking head north Good luck and keep in touch! |

Just heard 45 is North Bound ONLY from Houston up to Buffalo. That is an evacuation route about halfway to Dallas. If you need a place to stay page me at 888-348-0304 or send me an email. Kids and pets are OK. We are about 10 miles north of DFW airport. |

We had a change of plans as well. It looks like we are staying in our house to tuff it out. I'm more worried about all of the cars on the road right now. The way traffic is, a good number of people may see the storm from their cars on the highway. They say it is a 30 hour drive right now to Dallas. Good luck and God bless. Scott |

Looks like Rita is weakening to 150 MPH winds form 175 this morning and they now say it is Category 4 and may weaken to a Cat. 3 - still a MAJOR Storm! Also - landfall is now projeted to be betweeen Houston and Louisana border so Houston may not get direct hit! Too bad it won't just go away altogother! |

As far as airports go, they said all flights are sold out, and only 25% of the people that work there showed up today, so everything is delayed by about 4 hours. A total nightmare. Scott |

I was planning on heading out for this thing. Had an offer to go to Conroe (about 45 miles north of Houston). *She claimed she didn't remember making the offer.* So I had family in San Antonio that said I could come up there. My house will DEFINITELY sustain damage and I will be surprised if it's livable when it's over. I just wanted to get the car out to a safe place. The rest is insured adequately I believe. I figure when its all over with, I'll have lost everything but the car. Traffic was so bad attempting to get out was pretty much useless. Taking hours to get nowhere. Would have to stop to fill up (IF I could find gas) every 3 miles at that rate. A friend offered to store my car in their shop and let me ride out the storm with them. I accepted their offer. It's just another house, not a compound like the museum. Wish us luck. Someone asked if they were going to use the Astrodome as a shelter. The answer to that is a resounding NO. Not before the storm, not after the storm. I've been thru a cat. 3 before. Always said I wouldn't want to be around anything higher. This should be ... interesting, to say the least. I can't get that song out of my head... "Ridin' the Storm out"... (Might be the last song I hear.) |

We also had an awesome sunset up here! It definately was a lot more orange than usual, and you could see the high cirrus clouds moving in ahead of the storm. Hope everything holds together down south. |
