Here is another fun time . . . We went to a 'Chevy only' car show, just to view the cars, in our PT Cruiser. Parked in the parking lot nearby. Had a good time and met this guy that was taking pics for the show. A couple of months later one of young guys that we know says he saw our PT in a magazine. It turns out the guy taking pics was also doing it for Orlie's Lowriding Magazine. Not a bad deal, PT in an article about the Bow-Ties Guys Car Show and we weren't even in the show.

Usually I have no Problems with Car Shows. On Street Rod (like NSRA )Meeting I dont go with the Prowler, I use my 1934 Ford Coupe , because Street Rod stays most times for Pre-49 cut up year. Even if it is a hard discussion, because many modern high tech street rods are so close in design to a prowler ( or even look newer...)I (we) can not go in. Many Shows have cut up years , and it doesnt matter if I show up with a Prowler, a Lambo , a SSR or ... ( I sould try to put full fender on the Prowler, build a 1933 Grill in ,get a 33 Title and tell, here is my 33 High Tech Rod... Anyway , on a 50th car show i want to see only cars from 1950. ........ condor |

I'm sure to get my A____ ripped for the following coments, but I've got to get this out.............. I have to level with every one, if you've never been behind the scenes producing a show, you never get a grasp on the phyche of many exhibitors. On one had, you want as many cars as possible, on the other, there are (sometimes) good reasons to exclude or have a cut off year. As I indicated in an earlier post, it's just not fair (IMO) to have vehicles 10 years old or newer (in a competitive event) placed in the same classes as 30-50+ year old vehicles. There's little (if any) sweat equity involved in the newer vehicle and yet many owners feel they are entitled to show and compete for trophies. There is a significant number of ego driven owners who aren't happy with anything other than "winning" the big one. Our tenure with the local show was one of the greatest educations we've ever experienced, and wouldn't do anything different if the opp' was avaiable. We felt it was best to build a car show, for car people, and by car people; how would we like to be treated if we went to a show somewhere else? The best form of marketing would be pure hospitality, & that every car/owner was equally important as the next. We took imput each year from the participants and let them know their opinions were really imnportant. What made our task cumbersome was trying to deal with the trophy hounds (a mimority to be fair) who just had to have center stage. Mind you, the trophy hounds are not just the newer car owners, they are in many classes. There is a far greater reward (if that's what you're looking for) in talking to people who "used to own one" or "I've never seen one up close" than shoveling another "$10 trophy into your garage. Ask any bowler what they think of a shelf/basement full of trophies........ This is why Carol & I enjoy using the Polaroid (see previous post in this thread) so much. The spectator will walk away (never knowing our names) thinking, "Wow, those were nice people (who just happened to own a Prowler). A much kinder legacy than the people next to them who brag about how many trophies they have..........." Prowlers are a blessing in life, owning one is a second blessing. We never feel the need to be in some show to enjoy...........but there are ways to be part of them. This message has been edited by Ed W. on 03-16-2005 at 02:39 PM |

I think that every time a Prowler is shown and the publics questions are answered, bit by bit the nay sayers i.e. negative car magazine articles are silenced. Ed W. I admire the fact that you and Carol stepped up to the plate and produced almost ten years of car shows! I am sure you ran into more than your share of trophy hounds but you find that in any competition. I've seen Little League games and Jr. Beauty Pageants break out into fisticuffs. I believe it's all about balance. I enjoy showing my car as well as driving it. Stone chip trophies as well as $5 trophies are both, pages in the Prowler log book. Right now the highlights in my log book include driving from Pigeon Forge to the Biltmore Mansion with over 100 Prowlers and and being invited to attend World of Wheels and all the wonderful people that I met, talked and laughed with along the way. If I am excluded from a show, no foul. As halicat stated earlier the biggest enjoyment in showing is hearing people saying 'Cool I've never been this close to one before.' The Prowler is in a class all by itself. I have no desire to compete with a restored rod. I respect them and admire them. I am usually put into a 96 or newer class, or as The Great Pumpkin stated in a parking lot in 'only' classJeff |

Jeff, I couldn't agree with you more. Balance is paramount. Your metaphore of car shows being like little league games and pagents is very sound. We all know it's the small segment that cause these issues. Well done, my good man! |

quote: That was a great time, Ed......I don't mind doing those kind....and I'll do that again for you........I just don't see the "trophy" thing. I agree with what you said..I like to talk to people about the Prowler and answer questions they may have......but to go and sit at car shows every weekend just to try to bring home another trophy to clutter the basement (I already have too much in the basement) just isn't my thing. I'm glad that you appreciated I was there (it was my pleasure) but I thought it was cool that the Goetz's from Canada drove all the way down for that cruise night! |

You could always park off by yourself and have a sign saying, "please don't look at my car. It does not qualify". lol We were excluded from a local car show and the Vipers guys were across the street and asked us to join them. They allowed kit Cobras in the show, go figure. Another time we had 16 Prowlers at a diff. cruise in and everytime I go to the cruise in someone tells me that they had about 30 Prowlers there once, a few years ago. I think we made an impression and that is a lot better than a trophy, in my opinion. I just wish it would warm up so I could get out and Prowl a little more often. |
