Cj, Trust me when I tell you I have put MORE effort into your banner... It was a challenge trying to keep all that animation in your banner size under 35K. You do not need to do anything.... It has been changed on all your posts.

No offense, but I think the banners are getting too big! But still the best banners out there. ------------------ |

I'm with you Pirana! For those of us who are on dial up modems, the loading time just keeps getting slower and slower while we wait for all of the graphics to load. My suggestion would be to limit the graphics to an avatar only. |

Pirana and Larry Lord, Do not be mislead into thinking larger banners means larger loading times. The latest banners you have seen come up are still smaller in size and loading time than CJ's banner. I have a program that will calculate loading time and CJ's banner being the largest of all takes 13 seconds to load using a 28.8K dialup connection. All the other banners load under that. Keep in mind depending on how you have set up your browser, once these banners load into your browser cache. They will not get reloaded but referenced from your computer disk. If you have your browser setup to upload from site everytime then your diffinitely hating life. From home I connect to POA using a 26.4K dialup and I only see the download delay only once, but once I get those banners in my cache. Everything else loads under 10 seconds. Don't think I have a fast line, I do not!! My fast line is at work. The theory is keeping images below 40K bytes is still acceptable download times. The banners are all way below that number. Cj latest banner is actually smaller than the one she had before. Her older banner was 38K bytes. It now is 35K bytes. Most all banners are under 30K bytes. I would like to know of those reading this post, how many have this concern as Pirana and Larry Lord have?? They seem to be the brave souls to stand up and speak!! Please keep in mind the banners you now see are not taking longer to load. You just think because they are a little taller they must be taking longer to load. I'm keeping this in mind when I make these banners. If it will exceed 40K bytes, I will not choose that layout. I can shrink all banners to well under 10K bytes but image quality will suffer. This is just like horsepower, if you want more horsepower you will spend more fuel. If you want more fuel you will loose power. Later... |

Pirana and Larry Lord, What is an acceptable loading time??? 5 seconds Right now from what I'm seeing at a 26.4K dialup, there is a download average time of 20 seconds. What are you guys seeing?? If you guys have a stop watch, time the download time. You can clear your browser cache and hit reload on any given page and then hit the stop watch start button. Hit the stop button once the page completes. I'm a software engineer and like to have some data to work with. Thanks, |

I am also on dialup and really don't see that much delay. Keep up the good work Dan, I LOVE YOU MAN. This DF is the fastest loading site of all 5 that I surf everyday, thanks Mike K. |

Dan, since the server change earlier this month, the speeds seem to have increased for the better and please don't take this as anything against the banners. You do fantastic work and I know everone appreciates it as much as I do. My point was mainly that if people would only use the banner when they initiate a thread, it would save some time and space. Let's face it, how many times do any of us need to see everyone else's banner? After a little time, we all know who is who without the need for the banner. Maybe the solution would be to make the banner use optional by clicking a box instead of needing to click a box to not have the banner shown as we do now. Maybe in this way, more people would elect not to use the banner for every post. While I'm on my soapbox,,,I really see no need to list every item or plan that we may have for our Prowler in the signature line. This just makes the post take more space that need to be scrolled through to get to the messages. This seems to me a lot of clutter that could be eliminated. I feel that the signature lines have gotten too far out of control. Maybe just a limit to the amount of space or words that can be used would be a good idea. Personally, I think the best thing would be to just limit the graphics to an avatar. This would still enable people to personalize their posts but would cut down on the redundancy of both graphics. |

I just noticed how clean this thread looks and how easy it is to read when I posted my last message. Dan, A banner taking 13 seconds to load is not a problem until a long post has 8-10 different banners and also some repeats of banners due to replys from previous posters. This adds up quite quickly to long upload times doesn't it? This message has been edited by Larry Lord on 11-17-2001 at 11:37 PM |

I'm afraid I have to agree with Larry oin this one. Back some time ago I created an animated banner of my own and kept it under the size required but I recieved a note from the powers to be that it was taking 13 seconds to load and could I please not go to the animated one. I had no problem with complying to that request and removed it. I also am on a 56k line and as Larry points out that when you get a number of messages in a thread with even plain banners it does take a lot longer to load the more banners in it. This thread does load quickly for me as now there are only two banners in it.. My thoughts on the subject. ------------------ |

I love the banners, but to change the check from to delete banner to install banner would be a good move. I turn mine off sometimes. Guess If it was the other way around I would use it less. Now that I'm on cable I have no problem loading, but I remember not visiting some sites due to the LONG load time. and every 13 sec. graphics loading reduce the time cruising the net. See another example of Dan looking out for the slow guys without even asking to start with. What really suprises me is Gary C. is SO SLLOOOWWWW |

I'll drop my opinions here also. My thought is that if you are the starter of the thread or your first reply to a new thread, it is acceptable to have your banner inserted once during the entire thread. If you are making more than one reply post in that thread, no other banner should be allowed. This way, no duplications of banners in the same thread, which seems to be a waste of time. I also agree with Wildcat, change to insert banner as opposed to delete banner in your post. This should cut down the number of banners inserted, when not needed. I enjoy viewing the banners, appreciate the work Dan and others do in making them, and feel it gives the associates and new owners a personification of who we are and represent in our Prowlers. Also, I think about two or three rows of the 'message icons' could be deleted as well. Many are not used ever. For Donny Burnap, Marty Usher, Al Butchchee, and I save the tongue one in the bottom row |

Thanks for all your work, Dan, on my banners, but the consensus seems to be that it causes too much trouble. I have ALWAYS tried to stick to just using it once in a thread, whether I started the thread or not. I guess I will have to refrain from using it at all. Thanks anyway, I know it was a lot of work. |

OK, Here's the trade off that we've made. The show signature check box has always been checked (or defaulted on) whenever a post is made. We've made a change, so that now the check box is defaulted off. If someone wants their signature and banner to show up, all they need to do is simply click on the box when submitting a post. Let's give this a try and see if it helps. |

Banners are nice, but it is a matter of technology and how it spreads. All of our systems vary, and recently Donna and I found that the switch to cable modem made a huge difference in speed. Now everything comes up almost immediately, even the videos of burnouts download fast. But if you don't have the speed yet, complicated graphics are a nuisance. Once you've seen someone's banner what really matters is what they have to say. No need for any hassle, each of us is doing whatever we can. Thanks to Mike K and all the other people who make all of this possible for us . |
