Dan, the banners you provide for us all to use are fabulous! I have invited many friends to check out ProwlerOnline and they all come back saying how cool the banners are. Having the choice to use them or not is available so PLEASE keep on pushing out the banners. (Not to mention my boys get a thrill everytime they see the banner)

Thanks Mike K for all you do!

Great comment Mike G

Geez,,,I didn't want to start a war here or be a control freak. I was just agreeing with Pirana and offering what I thought to be a sensible suggestion and compromise. Sorry if I offended anyone with "my" opinion.

Save it, I guess some people are pretty happy now. I miss these banners. Enough said. This reminds of another site. And in the beginning of the end of that one. And the people inv,,,,,,,,,,,

Nah, never mind, you see, I remember, and knew more than some people realize.

And I never forget.

Whoa!!!! You are all OTT IMHO!!! (Over The Top)

ALL that has happened is someone commented about the size of the banners affecting page loads, and in my experience that concern has merit...especially when the thread gets long!

In response, ALL that was done by Mike (and myself) was to make the DEFAULT for showing sigs set as no. Basically what that does is puts the POWER in YOUR(the users) hands, does it not?

YOU(the users) know that there are some of your "friends" who have issues with too many banners.

YOU(the users) know if a thread *might* already have a bunch of banners in it.

YOU(the users) now have the ability to control that, or pitch in and help make everyone happy. (funny thing is...that was possible before if the a user UNCHECKED the box).

This is just a matter of everyone finding middle ground....but as soon as someone feels like "the fun is gone"...?????

I remember way back when....GaryC asked me to remove his Avatar because he was concerned about the page loading for others on dial-ups, etc. All this time I thought THAT was what this board was all about.

I have no clue what Dan is doing....but the only thing different here is:

Now you(the user) have to consciously check the box if you want to show your sig (which, by the way, is how the board comes "stock").

AND

When you(the user) do include your sig you are kindly asked to keep things like page loading, how many banners are in the thread, how long is the thread.....

The power is yours....so what has changed? Nothing. Nothing HERE had anything to do with anything Dan is doing...because NOBODY said NO BANNERS. A conversation ensued...and at some point people started picking up their balls and going home.

That is my 2 cents. Any Admin/Mod who disagrees (read that as Mike) is free to edit/delete...but I fail to understand all the emotions and anger.

(sig omitted)

PS You know what is sad to me? Almost every time there has been a request FROM the userbase...it has been met. Not always with lightning speed...but it gets done.

Then, when there is just a small POSSIBLE request from the other side...and it is pretty much discussed, nothing but attitude. Makes me wonder.

Thanks Tony for your reply, but your quote above is my issue. It was already posible to disable one's banner if one wanted to do so.

I'm done, (I think) on the topic. There is more to this than just banners, IMO. I'm quite sure of that.

I stick with my original response, its a sad day to have a few people, (and I do not mean you or Mike) who have issues, to control the ammount of fun the majority of people have on this site.

Tony, we are all thankful to Mike and yourself and the others that offer this site for us to share. All that could be construed as bad feelings against the POA for the apparent removal of the sigs were probably overreactions to the removal without knowing why. I can understand Dan's feelings when his many hours of work can be erased by complaints from those with slow dial ups . I also think this was an overreaction on Dan's part. Dan, your work in my opinion, was dressing to the site and since the site never complained, how about reconsidering and returning the banners , or at least let us know what's going on?

Hmmm, I see your point JD. (sigh)

I have NO IDEA about "other issues"!

Having seen your point, I hope that you can see mine when I say that MANY, MANY times people might WANT to uncheck the box...but forget before they post. This way just fails on the (I hate to say this ) conservative side.

In the end...nothing has really changed. Like I said above...users ask for something or voice a concern and we take action. Mike said above that we were just going to try this...see if it made a difference. Shoot, I've added features to this board when I was asked by ONE person...and that was never an issue of "a few having control" or however you phrased it.

SIDE NOTE: I appreciate your reply JD...seriously! When I saw there was already a reply after mine I feared the worst!! I did not want to offend ANYONE!! I am striving to make it known that nothing has changed....we're just trying something different!

Case-in-point: Everyone likes the link the the latest reply, right? How many people remember when that was FIRST implemented???? This is actually the SECOND time I have added that!!!! Constantly trying new things as the site grows....experimenting with sigs is just part of that. Again...NOBODY said "NO BANNERS".

I am truly sorry you feel the way you do. I am always here to help...accept ideas for middle ground...anything!

Tony,,,

This way just fails on the (I hate to say this ) conservative side.

I'm not conservative.

I am truly sorry you feel the way you do. I am always here to help...accept ideas for middle ground...anything!

I'd say put it back the way it was, but I feel the damage is already done what with Dan pulling the banners.

I say again, it's just a friggin shame. And these words are mild compared to what I really want to say. Some people,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Tony, I know you and Mike are always here to help. Trust me when I say that. Your hard work is much appreciated by me. I hope this comes to a good conclusion.

Dan and to all of those concerned:

I read the above and took it as a question, asking for opinions, which I gave mine. If I misunderstood that line, I apologize for giving just my personal opinion which was NOT a NEGATIVE AGAINST the use of banners. I have sat on, slept on, and have had this situation bothering me for 15 hours now - and if I'm one of those considered to be a "control freak", I want to be called out and named directly and state what I said to deserve this slander for giving my opinion. PLEASE CONTINUE TO READ MY NEXT POST, Thank you,,,,,,,,

To Dan and all those concerned:

My quote backs the use of banners in thread posts. I gave an opinion as to how many are needed/repeated in a thread, this is just MY opinion and was not to be taken as offensive towards Dan or any other person using their banners. I personally feel that I'm wearing a Target t-shirt on this topic, and would like the air cleared as soon as possible. I've always considered this a free speech website for everyone, not just a few. If I'm considered a control freak, I'll take that to heart and refrain from posting here again. You tell me.............................prowlertime@aol.com

As you said, this is a free site, and one can express their opinion. I'm not sure if you were refereing to me in the above posts or not, but I do have opinions, and I express them. Your telling me you would quit posting because of what someone says??? Really????

When I spoke with Dan about this, he advised me not to say anything. I'm not like that. I saw what i feel is a wrong being done to a friend of mine. Now, if that is being protective, sue me. But the results of this thread have shown what can happen.

LL I have had many new members contact me via E-Mail because they see I have this modification or that in my signature line and thus asking for information or assistance. So I think they do serve a purpose. I received one just before the weekend.

I don't know why this went where it did but I think until everyone is able to have the speed of cable modem that it makes sense to use banner once per thread.....I LOVE the Banners. and get to see what others have done If we are all mindful of the slower guys I think you will agree....am I wrong?

Wow, I go off for 2 days and all this happens. I have always loved Dan's banner (and any other banner for that matter). I have a fast connection, so I do not have to wait for it to load. What sometimes gets tiring is when one banner takes half a page, so after a small response you still have to scroll down way, way down to the next. And after a few short responses it goes a long way.

In no way or form was I upset at any banner. I love to see them pop-up. I have never asked for one, because I know how involve it is to make them. And I never wanted anything for free(and could not afford it anyways).

Keep on posting...
