Prices at our locations in NC & VA are now $2.559 to $2.699 depending on brand or unbranded and distance from the terminals. Rack (wholesale) prices went up 19 to 26 cents between last Tuesday to Friday. MD - You're right. Retail dealers are just the opposite of "making a killing". Most of their margins have tightened to marginal points or they are selling at cost. We serve approx. 160 stations in NC & VA. 16 went brankrupt in the past 18 months and 28 are for sale. A few are broke and don't realize it. Gene - Yeah many don't realize that you turn the inventory before you can realize the gain. Most people don't believe you when you tell then that retail street prices don't react as quickly as wholesale prices. You and I get killed in up markets and try to make it up in down markets. AC - I know you are not flaming us in the gasoline business. You wait to flame us on other more important stuff like Kat colors, weather, etc.! Mean Cat - In my opinion you hit it on the nose. Refineries have been shut down and you can't even get a permit for pipeline renovations much less expansion. Low refining and distribution system capacity along with increase demand results in spikes. To slow demand, prices keep getting bumped, but guess what - demand has not fallen. If retailers/distibutors aren't making money, who is? Major oil co.s and banks. IMO. The majors are charging more simply because they can (why does a dog lick himself?), but the banks/credit card co.s are really tonning it with little effort and are flying below the radar. They charge (in most cases) on a percentage of retail sales anywhere from 2.5 to 3.5%. 3% on $2.50 vs. $.90 (20 months ago) is a tremendous increase without any additional effort expended. Most retailers don't make a 3% margin in an up market and work their buns off. Pumpkin - As usual you facts are right on, but the actual amount of gas extracted from a barrell of oil is very dependent on the quality of the oil. The oil quality can vary greatly. Chromer can probably enlighten us here. Sorry for the long post, but you guys asked and I took the opportunity to vent.

I got allocation notices from Exxon AND BP this afternoon. Anytime this happens it's a sure sign of short term wholesale increases. My right hand man told me earlier this afternoon that the 3s we ordered last week in anticipation of $3+ retail gas are on back order due to demand. The final tab for the 2s (once prices went over $2.00) was $8,600. Over $3.00 all mechanical dispensers need new computers(totatizers in the heads) at $625 each and many electronic dipensers need new computer boards @ $325 each. It looks like going over $3 will cost us at least 18 grand. |

Major oil companies are having to find new words to describe profits, billions just doesn't cover it any more. Hard to find the financial need for reinvestment and increased capacity by the bigs. States with sales tax (i.e. Michigan @6%) must be smiling quietly. Would you prefer 6% of $1.75 or $2.60. Well that is a 50% increase in tax revenue without lifting a finger. Future for road construction money should be bright! |

I drove my 427 dual quad cobra to the closest gas station-became ill and had to go home at about 8 miles to the gallon! |

So why did congress pass and the president sign an energy bill last week that gives the big oil companies millions in tax breaks? Is it just pay back for favors? |

Mike - If I remember correctly, there are 6 states that have a wholesale component tied to their gasoline tax. As the wholesale price increases a percentage of the tax increases also. The problem is that many states do not "lock box" the gas tax. What should go to road construction/maintenence is often transferred to the general fund to balance the budget. |

Gas prices jumped 10 cents a gallon yesterday . That's over 30 cents increase in the last two weeks. Regular now $2.59/9 Plus 2.69/9 , Premium $2.79/9. If we place sanctions on IRAN it's going to get worse. |

The end of the price increases is NOT in sight. Arizona soon goes to 'winter fuel blend' to satisfy the environmental federal guidelines,,,,another 10 to 15 cents will be added We should have never allowed China to build cars, lol. |

AC - I think one of our big problems is that our government has never strongly supported development of alternative sources of fuel. Americans love their cars and love to drive. Unfortunately we're married to one source and one source only for fuel, so we are extremely vulnerable to price shocks like we have now. In my mind, it's like stocks, ya gotta diversify and create alternatives so that when this sort of crap happens we don't take in the shorts so hard. We keep hearing that oil is a finite resource and it's not going to last forever. I'd hate to see the US waiting and waiting and then scrambling to replace oil when the supply is running out. There are plenty of folks making a killing right now, but they're not anyone you or I know in POA. |

quote: I know the feeling.. I haven't taken my boat out since April. It just isn't fun anymore at these prices. I remember when I thought $1.99 on the lake was bad. Putting $100.00 in my boat would be like putting $5.00 in my car. The bad part is that without using it I'm spending about $1k a month for nothing! Wholesale prices actually corrected last night by falling approx. 2 cents. AC - The summer gasoline (lower Reid Vapor Pressure of 7.8) is actually higher priced by about 2.5 cents than the winter formulation (RVP 9.0). Change is 9/15 east of the Miss. I don't know the changeover date in your part of the country, but it probably about the same time. |

What ever happened to Gasohol? A 20% mix would sure cut into the barrels of crude imported. The government should subsidize that instead of all the useless crap they (sorry WE) pay for now. Charlie |
