For a moment, I thought about posting a picture of the cardboard door we're playing with. This is a much bigger project that it seems. The suicide hinge kits that are out there will not work! When I stopped by the body shop at lunch, they had 33 different hinges that they were playing with. I need my head examined! Because of the curve at the rear of the door, it will need to swing out and down. The trick is to prevent and binding. Once it's done - It will be SIC!!! Hopefully some pics next week. Everybody Keep your fingers crossed. ------------------ |

You know when I was stationed in England one of the guys had a car with suicide doors and he was riding as the passenger one day and the door wasn't all the way closed... You know what happened next at 50mph he held on and was pulled right out of the car and bounced down the side of the road on an English country lane. That is probably what saved him since he ended up on dirt from the begining but he was banged up really good... |

As we progress, I'll post a few more pics. Now I just need to figure out how to post multiple pics. ------------------ |

George - the finished project will be well worth it. Congrats on the first (I hope not only) to complete the suicide door mod. Let us know how it is to get in and out. Are you removing the door handles? Marty |

quote: George, MAKE SURE YOU PUT THE SAFETY LATCHES ON THE FRONT OF THE DOOR. These eliminate the door opening when they should be closed. I have a few friends with street rods with suicide doors and they have the safety latches, a real life saver. Looking forward to the finished product |

george, this is a huge project!being in the body business,i have a question.im assuming, that the rr. of dr. where hinge is.is going to open to the outside of lock pillar, meaning the whole dr.will open to the outside.whereas when hinged at frt,it opens to the inside.i guess i dont understand why dr.needs to move 2 different directions.from what i see,it should swing straight out, please enlighten me.when i say this is huge, most people don't realize just how huge.besides making hinge from scratch.rear lock pillar must be reinforced to keep dr. from sagging.then you must move the striker and latch to the front, which also means altering all of the dr.latch rods/parts to.then making it all fit and work, good luck george.its quite a lot of work, and done right will work fine. ------------------ This message has been edited by jan bruggeman on 04-28-2004 at 10:18 PM |

Here is the latest in pics. Both doors will be hung this afternoon! Drivers side was tough, as someone decided to put the gas tank neck in the way. Driver's side should go much faster. Once they are hung, we'll fill the hole in the door where the handles once were. Needless to say, welding is gonna screw up the paint - flames included. OH BOY! In order to prevent any "binding" the doors will swing out and down. As you can see in the pics, without any adjustments, the door will swing down to the ground when fully opened. We'll stop it just before it starts down, except for shows. Thanks for all the support! ------------------ |
