I'm investigating a new front license plate mount for those who A)have decided to keep their front bumpers on, and, B)have to have a front plate. Can those from the states who both have front bumpers and need a front plate respond, please?

I have mounted my front plate inside my Kat - ready to pull out in case I need it... I don't want any holes in my bumper if I don't have to. The dealership in Fillmore mounted the plate right on the front of the bumper - the tech said there are markings on the bumber where to drill the holes. I haven't looked. ------------------ |

In calif, your suppose too, I never have. No bumpers. There is a guy here who made a nice bracket for the bumper where the license hangs from the bumper. I will try to get a pic if you want. ------------------ |

I believe someone on this site has a hinged plate holder that can be operated from inside the car. When plate is up, if fits right under bumper. While no plate is the best, this may be good for those places that the law enforcers have nothing better to do than give tickets for this minor offense. ------------------ |

All I have seen on the market look to be either too low to the ground where they'll collect a lot of stone chips or too flimsy or too utilitarian. I believe I've got a design that will NOT damage your bumper but everyone's input is appreciated and welcome. ------------------ |

I made my own bracket with flat metal from hardware store. Heated it and made necessary bends. Attached to underneath at battery mount and metal body brace on front. Looks and works great. Sits level with the body between tire and body. Painted black. Cost $10.00 Joe Powell |

Texas has the same LAW, but we don't care. No one has ever recieved a ticket for this YET! The cops usually just want to pull you over to check out the Prowler! Do like Cliff did, carry it inside the car and show it when & if you need to. ------------------ |

Paul, I havn't used a front plate on any of my "special" cars and havn't been hassled. This was in Va.,and N.Y. I keep mine in the trunk. Take a chance-what is it, an equipment violation if caught? ------------------ |

The reason it is getting to be such a hot topic is because the "Photo Red Light Enforcement" programs are going up everywhere. These cameras take a picture of the front of the car and use the license plate in the picture to issue the citation. LAPD officers are even citing parked vehicles - they haven't hit the parking lot down here yet, but I expect it before summer is out. ------------------ |

Being legal has to be a personal preference. Myself, I attract too much attention from cops, it seems. I have received tickets for no plates on my "special" cars in the past. While many hot rods choose no to have stickers on their windshields, I also have an inspection sticker on my Kat. I recently had a TX Highway cop idiot give me a lot of problems at a gas pump about whether or not my Kat was legal. He was mostly upset over my stock exhaust pipes. Oh well, someone has to run around in bullet proof vests. Maybe there is more of a reason than we know. Also, I do not like their attention as I went thru chemotherapy in 1993 and 94. I am not over it and need to take quite a few prescription pills. I really don't want to get anything going on with a cop towards their necessity as my hair is a little long (after loosing it during chemo). It just pays to keep on rolling without attracting undue attention for me. :-Q |

Great input, folks. I don't want invest in this "cure" unless enough of you think it's worthwhile. I am shooting for a way to use the provided DC holder without damaging the bumpers. The more the merrier on this topic. I did not buy anything for this purpose yet, myself, prefering to just prop it up on the dash which looks butt ugly but saves me a cop "stop". ------------------ |

In Ohio it is required. I had the one that attaches to the frame on for a while. I recently removed my front bumpers and then took it off because I thought it detracted from the look. Not more than a day later I happen to be on the Ohio turnpike when I was pulled over. Not for speeding, but for no front plate. A ticket that cost me $80.00. The guy was an ahole. Tried to talk him out of it, but he wouldn't hear it. I refuse to put a front plate on now. He was shooting radar and probably had nothing to aim at since they are trained to aim at the front plate. By the way, from what I understand placing it in the front window will not stop you from getting a ticket. ------------------ |

I to live in Ohio and got a ticket for no front plate ($75.00). I got the realrod bracket. Cut it, added some hinges and brackets, connected it to a electric actuator with a cable. Now I can raise it up or down from inside the car.

kAT, I have to say that is the most innovative way of mounting a license plate. I would have that if it wasnt that I already removed the bumpers. Congrats. P_S are those hyperwhit bulbs in the kat.. ------------------ |

P_S are those hyperwhit bulbs in the kat.. [/B][/QUOTE] Blue Diamond 100W in the high beam (and boy are the bright) and Blue Diamond 65W in the low beam. I felt it was safe to put 100W in the high beams due to the fact that I don't have them on very long. |

JPO-Man, if you didn't want to attract undue attention, you sure picked the wrong car. Twitch-so far I've been lucky in NY-almost 1 year with no front plate- and not a peep from the locals! KAT2K-nice mount ------------------ |

So what percentage of the sold units have to have front plates by law? Mike K., you're really good about getting that kind of data. Any idea? As of now, most of you seem to not particularly care that it gets put out front. I happen to agree completely with the no-plate crowd but who needs the hassle and the higher insurance rates for exceeding your quota of tickets? Who's given a moments thought to higher insurance rate for "getting ticketed"? I know State Farm, my insurer, doesn't look kindly upon tickets. Maybe its the moving violation kind that count most. ------------------ |

I had a 1987 Camry that I bought new and in 1989 took it thru a car wash somewhere out west. The automatic equipment tore the plate out of the bumper. I never repaired it, the car has never had a front plate since and it is still driven daily. My mom had it for years and Sandy's daughter got it in Feb. when she turned 16. No one was ever stopped for no plate. Front plates are required here in Ohio. It makes it much easier for the police to spot a getaway car from a bank robbery or any other type of crime. Otherwise they would not be able to see any plate on oncoming traffic. I don't have a plate on the Cat and have been stopped once for speeding and nothing was said about the front plate. Radar is probably a much wider cone than zeroing in on a plate, in my opinion. But I don't know that as a fact. If I got a ticket for no plate, I might reconsider my opinion. I doubt that equipment violations get reported to your insurance company but it is public record so they could have access to it. I guess you have to do whatever you are comfortable with. Personally, I try to obey ALL rules. lol |
