I am thinking about buying a hardtop Prowler that I have seen for sale. Can you guys tell me the pros and cons about having a hardtop? Will the car still be able to be used as a convertible? Where do you store the top? Also, If I decided buy one with the stock top, where could I buy a hardtop from later? I can't find any websites with information. Please help. |

I am 6' and have been able to get my hardtop on and off alone as long as the car is sitting with one side lower than the other and I take it off from the low side. I used some towels to hold it up in the back so I can lift if off or set it back on the Kat. Aloha -- Glenn -- |

Glenn, I can do it myself also but not everyone is 6'3" with a big wingspan. I still prefer to put it on with 2 people. |

Hubbard, the hardtop is an after market option, there were no Hardtop Prowlers built. They are all soft top convertibles and even with a hardtop, you still have the soft top in the trunk. The only drawback is that you cannot get into the trunk with the hardtop in place. You cannot store a whole lot in the trunk so it is not that big of a deal. I can get the off or on by myself but it is MUCH easier to do with two people. Again, it makes it much quieter. You need something to protect the trunk lid where the hardtop (and soft top) sit or eventually you can see a mark from the rubber gasket since it vibrates slightly and rubs. Those vinyl protectors are available also. The hard top costs about $ 3400, I think. ------------------ |

A hardtop, IMO, only makes sense for colder clims. I owned a 911 S4 for about 2 years as a fun car for the wife to drive before trading it. The dealer threw in a hard top of the same color that another guy ordered and just disappeared. They gave me the top because after 10 months of just sitting on the showroom floor and no one buying it, they just wanted it gone. I thought this great. A $5,500 hardtop for free. It turned out to be a real pain. Everytime the wife was out in the car and wanted to put the top down, the hardtop was in place making it impossible. Everytime she wanted to leave the house in the convetible mode, the hardtop was in place and I was not at home to help remove it. We ended up taking it off and putting it on it's stand and there it sat (like at the dealership) for 10 months more before we sold the car. I liked the look of the 911 S4 with the hardtop on but, the wife wanted a convertible, not a coupe. The nice thing about a convertible is that whenever the mood hits you, you can drop the top. With a hardtop in place, that is not an option. We live in a part of the country where it's shorts and t-shirts almost year round and never snows. She would probably be more inclined to the hardtop if we lived someplace that had real seasons and alot of snow, IMO. |

Thanks guys. You have helped out alot. I had found a Kat on ebaymotors (Mullound Edition) with the hardtop already installed for $30K. It had 15K miles on it. But the guy has already so it. SO I guess I am still in the market for one. I think I will do the hardtop thing. Does it cut down on the interior noise much? My wife hates to drive the car because of the noise in the cabin. More drive time for me!!! |

Yes, it cuts down on the road noise about 75 %. It changes the entire look of the car and I am extremely pleased with my hardtop. I highly recommend it. Sorry I gave you an inflated price. This message has been edited by ed monahan on 02-17-2004 at 12:17 PM |

Ed you were close on the price when you include shipping. But then when he orders it and I talk him into a Weekender you were low. |

I have a hardtop on my Candy Red. I didn't think I would like it as much as I do!! I am a women that is only 5' tall, so removing the hardtop by myself is more or less out of the question, but it's easy with two people. My husband really likes it a lot. He sunburns easy and it keeps the sun off. It doesn't get as hot as the black convertible top. Also cuts down on some of the wind noise. I don't mind any of that, but hubby does! 1. Yes, it has more headroom and with the light colored headliner it makes it seem even more spacious and definitely cooler. 2. Obviously, it can still be used as a convertible. At the Prowler events, there are some who have been known to book a room with an extra bed just to lay the hardtop on when not in use (and I won't mention any names! lol). There are usually people with enclosed trailers who will offer storage space (thanks!). 2. With regard to daily and/or winter storage (for me), the roof came with a storage rack and cover which is on wheels and is easy to move around. 3. As everyone said, Bob Goetz is the man to contact!! He's great to deal with! ------------------ Classic/Beautiful - I'm referring to the Cat of course! |
