Paul BHello all, Im a new member. just bought a 99 red prowler with 1800 miles. ITs a car i have plans for to make a dream car over time. I have been shopping for a better sounding exhaust. Borla, Flowmaster, Gibson, etc, all can make a custom system, but is there anything out there Catback or muffler that fits well with little rebuilding? Ill have many questions over time, but from what i read on the posts, this is a helpful group. Anyone In illinois or surrounding areas please say hello!
Paul B
99prowler99Welcome to POA. You will find this site very helpful. I really like the borla catback system. Souds great and a simple mod. You will find different opinions on this subject but I think the borla is probably the most popular among members. Have fun and enjoy the car and the site. I know I've been saved by many people on this site.
pumpkinWelcome Paul.The fun begins.
ed monahanWelcome and congratulations on getting the coolest car ever. Lots of choices for the exhause. SSS, straight pipes, flowmasters etc. It is in the ear of the beholder. Take your time and try to make an event and listen to the various configurations. Beside listening to exhaust, you will have a blast.
GenoTexRun (don't walk) to your nearest phone and call Jay @ 800-669-3540. He will fix you up. Then take a two-three hour drive north and I'll help you put 'em on!

Sounds sweet, many say just like the Borlas, for less than half the $$.

fortsmithHey there. Before I bought my Prowler, I had a performance built '69 442 convert as my toy. It had a built up 455 with headers, a 3 inch exhaust, and flowmasters. The tone and sound was that of a high performance, high C.I.D. big block. Everyone knew when I was driving by. Deep and loud. That is what I went from. When I bought the Prowler, it had straight pipes with just the resonators on the ends. I did not like the sound at all. To my ears that were used to big block V8 noise, the straight pipes sounded like a mazda, Toyota, or other import that someone had straight pipes on. The raspy ...lawn mower like sound that came out of the back was not pleasing to me at ALL. So, I had the original muffler installed again and I like that much better. My humble opinion is that you can't make a v6 sound like a v8 due to the degree and resonance. If you are wishing for that, you might re-think your goals. Good luck on finding the right tone for your ear. Have fun with the car!!!!
DUSTIHowdy Paul,
congratulations on your Kat and WELCOME to the POA !!

In regard to your question I have to agree with Mr. GENO ,
we have the SSS muffler on both our Kats because it's
THAT great sounding !

Best of luck with your 'hunt' for the 'right' sound and again welcome to the GREATEST group of folks !

BeWareAs Fortsmith said your Prowler will never sound like a V8. However you can make it sound much better than the stock exhaust and in my opinion not like a Mazda, Toyota or other import. I have The original Borla exhaust which has different tips than the Mopar Borla and I love the sound. The SSS muffler Jay Harris sells is also excellent and cheaper than the Borla as you are just swapping out the muffler and not the whole exhaust. The Borla and the SSS are very similar in sound at least to my ear. Both the Borla and SSS are bolt on no mods required. One of the best sounding set up I have heard is like the exhaust on Eddie Powell's car. He used resonators from 63 Corvette side pipes. He had a local muffler shop build the exhaust installing an X Pipe in between the Cats and the mufflers. You can buy these on the internet. They are called sweet thunder. The only downside to this Sweet Thunder set up is that it is loud and as Eddie will tell you can be over bearing on long drives.

chasmccartI purchased an SSS muffler and also a new Mopar Borla exhaust system. I have not installed either yet. I have been trying to find a local owner with the SSS installed so I can hear it first. I have heard the Borla and it does sound better than the factory exhaust. I may try the SSS muffler with the Borla pipes just to be different. Waiting for spring.

embePaul,

welcome!
The exhaust was the second mod to my Prowler after the front bumperless mod.
As everybody before me I can only recommend Jay's SSS muffler. The closest the V6 can get to a V8 sound. I'd also recommend to drill out the two rivets per pipe which hold the sound deadening glass pack in the rear muffler. Once the rivets are drilled out just pull them out. They can be reinstalled if necessary by pushing them back in and shooting two new rivets. Gives that extra note to the SSS muffler.

Just for the fun of building it I made my own exhaust system with straight through pipes and only rear mufflers: http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/Forum9/HTML/002338.html
Sounds very nice, but also very different than the SSS muffler.

Rpowell593Go with Jay's SSS (sweet - smooth - and sassy), it was my first mod, and you won't regret it.
