Dead End DonI'm sure I violated several trespassing laws, the speed limit, contributed to the delinquency of a minor, and am guilty of reckless endangerment, but I gotta tell someone, and I figure my secret is safe on this board.

My son and I went to Pomona on Saturday for the huge L.A. Roadsters show. We got there really late, and had to enter at one of the back gates. On the way to the parking lots, we were driving along the back of the dragstrip bleachers, and, lo and behold!!!! The gate to the strip is unlocked and open.

There were several large signs that said "Track In Use - Do Not Enter!!!" However, due to lack of storage space in the Prowler, I did not bring my reading glasses.

Soooo....in we went, and parked on the return road. Nobody in sight, anywhere. Got out of the car, walked around to the starting line, looked at the Buster Crouch memorial plaque at the starting line, picked some rubber off the ground, and still no one.

Turn and face the tower, wave my arms around, just to see if anyone is going to toss us out. Nothing.

Look at son - he looks at me. I say "No way...but maybe we'll just take ride down the return road, just to say we did." So, we do. 3 times. No one, anywhere. The 3rd run was at WOT, figuring this just could not last.

Nothing - no one.

I said, "Son, remember to always do as I say, and not EVER as I do, and keep your mouth shut about this to your mother, or I'll kill you."

Pulled around the barriers to the starting line, burned out, and put the pedal to the metal!!!!!

Got THREE (3) WOT 1/4 mile runs in on both lanes before we figured we were really pushing our luck, and got out of there.

That was Saturday. This is Monday.

Still smiling (however, I do regret my actions, but only to a very limited degree).

Wally Parks, forgive me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

quincyMr. Don,
Great story!! That's what you call pure serendipity!!
halicatA great example for your son ....

"your never to old to be a kid"

proud of ya Don !

miagmReally good story! I would have done the same thing given the circumstances. :
pumpkinGreat story, would do the same.
ProwlinNMIt will be something that your son will always remember. A great story to tell. "hey dad, remember when we snuck on the track". I know I cherish memories like that with my dad.
Marty UsherBad Boy!!
TooHipCatDon,

Cool Story!!! Being with your son makes it all that more special.

Brian

tangled up in BLUEgood story.....memories forever.....Wally would approve

even if they had made you stop the story would have still been great.....you were in a no lose Twilight Zone situation there.....

...about 20 years ago I was introduced to Wally Parks at the US Nationals....always remember that handshake and the few words we had......very likeable guy..

Dead End DonOk - now I've got a question for all you guys like Laddie and Marty, etc., who drag their cars regularly.

On every lap (ran it in auto, then pulled it into auto-stick to hold it in 3rd), I spun the tires at the hit of the throttle, AND on the 1st to 2nd shift.

We can't do this in our stock cars on the street, and the track had plenty of rubber on the surface, AND the 1st/2nd shift occurred after the 300 foot concrete launch pad, on the asphalt and in the "groove".

So, why was I able to catch rubber in both gears on a race track??????

Marty UsherThe tracks are slick unless they have been prepped beofre a race session. At Hot Rod Power Tour day to track in INDY appearently Hot Rod didn't pay for trackto be prepped so it was slick the entire length. Lowering tire pressure to around 20 PSI will get you more grip.

If you're just making passes, escpecially alone and without a clock, it's kinda fun to have the tires break lose isn't it?

Dead End DonMarty, I would have thought that just the rubber in the groove would have provided enough grip, even without fresh VHT traction compound, to hold my tires....apparently not.

And yes, it was a blast to get a nice chirp in 2nd gear, along with the "tunnel vision" effect of going down an actual track....

Might have to take the car to some "run what you brung" nights....

How do our stock Cats do in the 1/8th mile against "kids cars" - Mustangs, misc. rice burners, etc.?????

Can we hold our heads up, or are we generally watching taillights??????

Bob GoetzIf you have gears and exhaust the kid cars will be playing catch up until 1000 feet, if you cut a light on them and shake them up you can beat em.

BeWareI beat an Neon SRT4 in Texas in bracket racing. I cut a good light, the kid freaked out and red lighted. I set my estimated ET at 14.70 and he had his set in the 13's.
Dead End DonIs a bone-stock Cat going to run in the high 14's?????????

My impression is that they are mid-15 second cars.

So, my question remains - if I take it to the drags, which are probably going to be 1/8th mile on amateur nite, am I going to be competitive with anybody out there, or am I gonna be sucking exhaust fumes and picking bits of rubber out of my teeth....

Marty UsherThe Prowler is a better 1/8 mile car than 1/4 mile. I have no clue what a stock Prowler runs in the 1.8 though. My only runs are with Nitrous on stock m otor with gears (8.2's - 8.4's) or my stroker motor no nitrous 8.5's.
CJ Shame on you!

Heck, if the situation presents itself.....I say go for it.

DED........the best (so far and have only raced 3 times) I've been able to do with my "bone stock" cat was 14.9. I have to work on my reaction times, though..

TriJimTo answer the DE Don - Here is my bone stock '01 Mulholland at Temple Dragway in Texas. 14.9595 at 90.45 mph

Don. You would make the Prowler Proud...

Stock Prowlers run 9.4 to 9.6 in 1/8 mile... Temps, would make slight difference (on either side of those times). The Prowler would do well against most Kid cars in 1/8 mile... Gears might improve .1 to .2 of a second... Again, depends on Temps, track conditions on the day of the race... The Best 1/8 mile time I've ever run was a 8.1?? with my slow Paxton...

Top KatI agree with "TUIB", " Wally would approve"!!!!
Great story and unforgetable memory for you and your son.

Hey Laddie,
Good to see you posting again. I was wondering what had happened to you and if things were ok. We missed you on the Power Tour. I seen you had registered on ************* but haven't seen a post from you anywhere in a while! Nice to see ya!

RPLLaddie,

How is your personal drag strip, oh I mean subdivision progressing? You haven't posted much on it lately.
