tangled up in BLUE...I just had this discussion again yesterday with another Kat owner.....

....with the invention of the so called "market adjustment" Prowler pricing was way above MSRP(window sticker) in the beginning, but settled in at MSRP within a year or so....dealers continued to sell the cars at MSRP, discounts below that rarely happened and all was well with buying and selling Prowlers....there were few used Kats on the market and they usually sold at or very near MSRP also....

....flash forward to 2001...DC decided to dump Plymouth and so anything carrying that name was now distressed merchandise.....DC opened up the gates and offered an $8K rebate on any new Prowler with the Plymouth name....overnight, new Prowlers went from approximately $45K to $37K....thus the used Prowlers were forced into the low thirty thousand range where they still seem to be today.....depreciation has been relatively small on the cars before and since the massive rebate program from DC on the Plymouth models....where would the prices be today had the rebate program never existed....we will never know ???

Here's an addional factor: When Chrysler announced the demise of prowler production in 2001, they also flooded the market and stated that the Prowler would be a current model through 2002. When production concluded on February 15, 2002, Chrysler still had production on hand to fill out the 2002 model year (which turned out to be more like 2-3 years). The oversupply of Chrysler Prowlers, combined with the massive rebate to the dealers on Plymouth Prowlers, certainly hurt the selling prices of used prowlers. Now that the new supply is just about gone, we must wait and see.

Marty UsherWhen you look at the numbers, low $30's is still 70 to 75 percent of the MSRP. For a car 3 to8 years old,that "ain't so bad"

Kelly Blue book trade in on mine is $18K now. It's amazing what the high mileage does to the book value.

ALLEY CATMarty - I've always found Kelly Blue Book to be a dealer tool. I much prefer the N.A.D.A. figures as being more realistic to both buyers and sellers. JMO

I'm thinking that the cats in the future might hold to around 25K range. The problems - new car buyers being able to buy a new Mustang, Mazda RX8, and many other cars in that price range = new car, no miles on it, full warranty,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but still, they don't have a CAT.

condorI bought my 2001 Prowler to a good price in april 2003.
Beginning of 2004. there where some 2000Prowlers in the 23000USD range aviable in autotrader.com
If you look today, most prowlers below USD 30000 have lots of miles , and are 1999 (some 2000) models. For me, the average Prowler used car price went up a little in the past 6 month.
What dorpps a LOT is the price of the Chevy SSR. In march this year the deales asking 44000 to 58000 USD for a 03/04 SSR . Today you get a 2004 SSR almost new for under 32000 UDS, dollar direction is still on the way down (.. will get cheaper a lot, soon) In yust ONE YEAR , a SSR dropps under the price from a used 2000 Prowler. >>>.
larrypenAt this time in my life have have been blessed with the ability to be able to have most any car on the market ( Not all but most) Some have more toys and buttons and some have more HP.. BUT NONE CAN MATCH THE PROWLER in looks and fun. Go spend 95K and when they walk over to the Prowler and pass yours try not to cry.. JMO (

MADMAX Its my understanding that any rebate programs offered never included the Prowler !!!!!!
CJMADMAX..........if you are talking about incentives on the Prowler.......no........there were never any offered. However, the Friends and Family certificates DO apply to CHRYSLER Prowlers (if you can find a dealer who will agree to sell it under this program). PLYMOUTH Prowlers do not apply.
ed monahanMadmax, When Plymouth was discontinued there was a $ 6000 (+/- $ 1000) rebate to the dealers which should have been passed on to the buyer. This was for "leftover" Plymouths after they changed to Chrysler. That was the only "rebate".

This is the first I've learned of the Prowler rebate program that may have inordinately depressed prices.

However inovative and competent the Prowler design and build has been...it seems that just about every decison about marketing the car was a disaster (for maker and
buyers)?

Looking back on it Link to POA Prowler Oversupply 12/00 the oversupply, price dive may have begun even before the rebate in 2001?

Ed - I believe there was another rebate to the dealers, after the production run of the Prowler was ended in February of 2002. First probably going for 2001 models still in stock, and later on I'm sure DC kicked out some bucks back for leftover 2002's still on floor plan. At one time after 9-11-01,,,as the economy swept downward, I recall several dealers selling the new Mulhollands and golds for $35,700,,,which had to be a figure adjusted by rebates to entice sales and move these units out of stock.

Flash forward 2005. I was interested in the comment from the gentleman from Germany about the Yankee dollar and his prediction for the next year –keeping in mind the US buck has recently been in somewhat of a free fall already.

If he represents the current thinking on the Continent about the dollar dropping a lot more and soon, this may become a self fulfilling prophecy as the foreign consumer holds off purchasing our good and services thinking everything will become still cheaper. The trade deficit becomes still larger, the bucks falls still further and interest rates go quite a bit higher.

It could happen easy enough but for the moment this is all known and already priced into the financial markets. If a guy had real conviction about it, he could play the currency market, on margin no less, make a bundle, and buy whatever car he wished off the profit.

When a franchise is discontinued, the manufacturere is obligated to buy back all of those vehicles. DC did not want to buy back the Prowlers and have to dispose of them, so they offered an incentive to the dealer to keep the Prowlers and sell them on their own. I'm not sure, but I don't think the dealers were obligated to pass that savings along to the consumer.

YellowFeverI believe there is alot more to the price drop and current prices then just the incentive or rebate in 2001.

For one, this is a toy car. This is not your typical family of four sedan that most would buy as primary transportation and while most of us can, most folks can't afford a 2nd or 3rd toy car to just sit for the weekends.

Second, the economy back then was faultering and the first thing most folks give up or don't buy are toys.

Third, 9/11 really drove point two home and probably caused folks who could have bought one to rethink it (I know alot of folks that were set to close on homes backed out because of 9/11, not sure why, but it was a fact).

Fourth, market saturation. Those that wanted one, had one (or most did anyway) which is why even after heavy discounting quite a number of dealerships still had new ones (some still do).

Fifth, you either get it our you don't. While folks in here like the design, alot of folks aren't all that crazy about it. We've had 4 and the wife wasn't crazy about any of them. She knew I liked them but, she couldn't figure out why.

The incentives may have accelerated the price drop but, I think there are any number of other things that contributed to it, IMO.
