| thomas leuschner | How can I remove the CHROME deck lid protector from my trunk lid without ruining the paint?
I am not getting a good feeling about this operation.
I would like to replace it with the clear 3M product.

| Kraut | If it was done right, it was installed using only water. As a result, it is not bonded and should lift right off. I haven't tried this myself, since I want to leave it in place.

True, but that's probably not the whole story.If the adhesive is the same as the 3M reflective films that I'm familiar with, the adhesive coating contains millions of encapsulated adhesive "beads". The soapy water is used for easy positioning, but when it is squeegeed, the beads break and release the adhesive. The adhesive strength may vary from "Post-It Note" to permanent, but I believe that you'll find it's more than the vacuum created by squeezing out the water. -GRROWL |
| Pantera | You can also heat the protector up with a hair dryer...It will make the glue release easier....I do NOT recommend using a heat gun...Too easy to damage paint... Once you get it off...WD-40 works pretty good at removing the adhesive residue. ------------------

| thomas leuschner | The trunk protector I used was purchased from a person on this site about 4 years ago I cannot recall his name.He made them. The quality of the plece was superb so I guess so was the glue.
I think I have a problem on my hands.

I went to the 3M site and found the removal procedure. It looks like I wont be able to do this myself.
Reads like I need a plan B ( Professional help ). Many thanks guys.

| catfish | tom, that decal is so easy to remove you wont believe it.as stated above use a hair dryer to get hot.heat about 12 inches or so of decal starting at one side.when material is hot start peeling up and continue.you want it hot,but not super hot.you can tell when you have it the correct temp,because it will come off pretty easy.if you get it the correct temp the adhesive will stay on the decal side when removing it.usually if not hot enough the adhesive will stay on the paint instead.i have no idea what companys material was used in the manufacture of these decals.all decals have some form of adhesive to hold them to the surface. ------------------

I doubt that the material used for the deck lid protectors is the strongest/permanent type, it should be more of a light/intermediate (but there's definitely some adhesive). Try the heat as recommended (not too much), and the 3M site says that the remainder should be removeable with mineral spirits (make sure you protect ("wax") when done). -GRROWL |

but I had some VERY expensive Boats with 3m Vinyl lettering on them, And we used " Easy Off Oven Cleaner" on them -took them right off.
After they came off we always used "Goo Gone".. great product sold at all Major hardware chains.

The reason I want to remove the one I have is to replace it with the bigger decal for the hardtop. Does anyone know if Paul is still around? His chrome decal was top shelf. |

Not all that difficult, but it did take two tries to work out the procedure. I'd be happy to answer any questions if anyone else is interested. -GRROWL
Third, if you're doing this for protection from the hardtop, it doesn't provide as much benefit as I originally thought: The soft-top uses a gasket that has contact surfaces on the paint like knife edges - yes, I would strongly recommend decklid protectors to everyone for the soft-top. However, the hardtop has a soft, round gasket where it makes contact. With over 4 years using the hardtop decklid protector, the soft-top has cut deeply into the vinyl. There is no indication whatsoever of a hardtop ever contacting the vinyl. I would take pictures except for two reasons: 1. The hardtop is on for the winter.
2. The car is being stored in a friend's garage until the new home for GRROWL/Sparky is built. -GRROWL P.S. - Future home for GRROWL and Sparky:

| ed monahan | If there is a little grit on the rubber gasket and if it moves slightly it will leave a mark. I don't wipe off the gasket every time I put the hardtop on the car. Dirt can also get on the gasket as you drive, I am sure. |

| catfish | do not buy and use the 3m decal remover,iv'e tried the stuff.makes a real mess you wont believe, and doesn't work worth a crap.always use heat and you'll have a much cleaner job.3m makes a multitude of great products,but not the decal remover. ------------------
