Can we make this a sticky?

I have photos to complement this.

This was contributed by Jon Hess on FB

I cannot recall how to upload photos on POA
Suvprowler Prowler
1: Lower steering column
2: Pull straight back on corners of dash near the door to unclip lower edge of dash and remove.
3: Unscrew cluster.
Disconnect Red and Blue harnesses. Slightly pull up on harness clips to remove harness plugs.
4: Remove screws and rear cardboard cover on the back of the gauge cluster.
5: Locate capacitor C9 (see photo)
6: Inspect for evidence of leaked capacitor fluid. Ie: brown or black residue at the base of the capacitor or the resistor below and IC above. Corrosion on those parts is possible.
7: Unscrew and remove green circuit board on left. Unplug harness to main board and set aside.
8: Unclip all wire harnesses from main circuit board. Release small clips on each side of ribbon cables and pull clips up to release ribbon cable.
9: Remove screws and main circuit board.
10: Unsolder the 2 capacitor terminals on back side of main circuit board an remove capacitor.
11: Use electrical contact cleaner and Qtip or soft brush to clean residue and corrosion from circuit board and affected components.
12: Install new 68uf 105C (32v or 50v) electrolytic capacitor. Confirm polarity is correct and solder on reverse side of the circuit board. Cut off excess capacitor wires.
13: Reverse above procedure to reassemble cluster.
14: Place cluster in dash and connect Red and Blue harnesses to test repair.
15: Screw in cluster and reinstall dash.

Back a few years (time flies) I had tried Eastern Electric and it came back that the cluster was not repairable. Just talked to them and they have another cluster in the shop where it looks like it may be the integrated circuit. I am going to send my board to them next week and they will test that. He is trying to find a replacement IC.
He did mention the leaking capacitor caused a variety of problems. This was a great post with the link to the pictures. So now I get to pull the cluster out for the third time.

I have a cluster where the C9 replacement did not correct the problem. Would be interested in how this progresses so that I can have this one repaired as a spare.

Tom, I just had mine repaired a month ago for $ 100 at a local TV/Electronic repair joint. Older guy, old time junky shop but it was fixed within two hours. Let me know if you want to try him. You can send it to me and I will take it over, about 15 minutes away.
Marc's Electronic repair on Colerain Ave in Cincinnati if you want to google it. He knows his stuff, I think

Thanks to Ed, my spare cluster is now completely functional again. Just tried it in the Silver Prowler this morning and it works perfectly!
Thanks Ed for all the help.

Glad it worked out so well. He said yours was more complicated and charged $ 150 but still worth it. If anyone else needs to have one repaired, I will be happy to take it over to him. Shipping was about $ 50, it weighs nothing but it is wise to put it in an oversized box so it doesn't get damaged. It took a couple of days for the repair this time.

I have yet to hear of this capacitor failure in 2000 and newer. Maybe this is the reason.

From another discussion.
The 1999 uses 5010273AB, but there is a 5010273AC. From what I understand, the AB and AC are not interchangeable, that the AC is for 2000 and later models. I have not tested this out yet.

I don't KNOW. I would be guessing. I have only seen 97s and 99s having the problem.

I am going to leave it as is for now. If more specifics come up I will add to it.

Rich, I did move the clusters between the 99's (both were bad) and my 2001 Silver while I was trying to diagnose the issue and I saw no difference when putting the 2001 into the 1999 or the 1999 into the 2001. The only thing that I did see is that the 1999 cluster was not working in either car, but once repaired, it worked in both. I did not think to look at the part numbers at the time.
