I have heard that if you do not trim the bottom edge of the factory Prowler mudflaps before installing that they will rub on the drivers/passengers side front when the wheel is cut to the extreme right or left. Is this true or not? If it is...how much should be trimmed off?
Thanks again for your help guys! You've all been a big help so far. Have a great day!!!

I have never heard that they rub on the car anywhere if they are not trimmed. They will rub on speed bumps so you will learn to be careful. Don't back over speed bumps as they can rip the bracket off of the fender. My advise is to install with nyloc nuts, not too tight. The factory instructions say to use thread locker on the nuts in the kit. That's nuts because the rear flappers come with nyloc nuts. (6mm x 1mm pitch)

You can trim them if you want. About 1" is good but they will still scrape on some speed bumps or don't trim them and don't go that way.

My flaps are the lowest I've seen. I have no rubbing and have backed over speed bumps with no problem.

Problems CAN occur with a drastic speedbump, and deep gravel driveways. Never back up then.

IMO trimming them reduces their effectiveness. I will turn 10K miles this week, and NO rock chips at all on either side!

I trimmed 1" and don't have any chips at 9k miles. I still drag over virtually any speed bump so I usually avoid them or go real slow. Without trimming I would drag over a 2 inch drop leaving my driveway.

I HAVE to back out of my driveway or I scrape...LOL.

There is talk of adjusting the fenders as well. I think you can add up to 1 1/2 inches of play depending on how you roll your fenders back or forward.

I think my mudflaps hang less than 2" off the ground.

Fuzzy flaps are much more appealing than chipped and dirty sides to my car. I've got mine about an inch off the ground.

That sounds like a challenge - the East Coast posse will inspect on Sunday.

Thanks again for your great ideas on the front mudflaps. It doesn't sound like I should trim them but just be ultra careful as to how I drive. I will try to NEVER back up over speed bumps. I will be sure to use a little Loctite if necessary.
As you guys can see...I am a "Newbie" to ProwlerOnline. I just can't believe the excitement that I get when I drive it. I pickup my Purple 97 next week...I can't wait!!! Only 9,600 miles on it and it's in pristine condition.
I once again want to say thanks for all of your advice cuz I know you guys have seen it all when it comes to problems with these cats.
Have a great day everybody!!!

TooHip, put the flaps on, turn the wheel all the way to the right and get out and look how much clearance you have.
It is pretty close to the ground! You can lose the fender or bend the fender braces by backing up, pinching the flap between the pothole, (speed bump, etc) and the back of the front tire. As the tire rotates it pulls the fender down in back.
Also beware of the front nose of the car. It is a lot farther from the seat than you can possibly believe. Don't lean into the car and release the seat back. Very powerful spring.

Before I put my mud flaps on, Cut a slice about 1/8 inch wide above the holes, this will allow the mud flap to pull out before you rip the fender.

Mud Flaps and the trim issue. When these cars were put together they must not have had a specific measurement on the adjustment of the fenders. You can roll the fenders forward all the way forward and will have no need to cut the flaps. And in most cases if you do not touch the fender adjustment and install the flaps and measure from the ground up they will not be the same, I have seen as much as 2 1/2 inches from side to side.

Hi TooHip...

If you have no rock chips after these miles with no flaps, you are doing OK.

Yeah the car has it's quirks, but it is as reliable as any other production car..and I drive mine daily.....this site has been amazing as far as knowing what to look out for.

Another thing to look out for is to take your center caps off and look for broken clips...then do a search here on "Hot Glue Treatment for center caps"...It will save you another headache...

Stromcat - it depends on the size of your fingers and how nimble they are. Seriously, with a small wrench you can do the job without removing the frront wheels.

I have over 70,000 m iles since I installed the front flaps and they definitely help. No trimming on mine either.

I put the flaps on without taking the wheels off, on the Candy. One fender was already pulled back and therefore it was very close to the wheel. That side took quite awhile to finish. The other side was really simple to do.

Thanks once again for all the advice from everyone. I will definitely take off my front wheels to install the flaps. It will give me a chance to inspect my pads and even throw a coat of wax on my rims while I'm at it.
Have a good remainder of the weekend everyone!

I've not trimmed the flaps on either one of my cats and I've had no problems.
