Things have been kind of quiet, bordering on dull around here. Let's hear something you accomplished or did that really WASN'T an accomplishment that is maybe a Once In A Lifetime or Once in a Century occurrence. 1. I was backstage at the SIMON & GARFUNKEL concert in Central Park. Too long of a story to tell here. 2. I heard a Catholic priests confession (twice). Back in the 80's, for real, and just realized how odd that is, just last night. Fire away. Let's hear 'em. This message has been edited by ed monahan on 12-26-2022 at 08:37 PM |

I'm still thinking about Dave servicing the Victoria secret models. LOL It is hard to follow that, but I'm glad both you and Ed are helping the priest out, everybody needs someone to talk to. |

I was hoping this would get some traction and we would hear somethings that were unusual or bizarre. I bowled a 300 game and have had one hole in one, which was TOTAL luck since I am a hacker in golf. |

I met Dick Van Dyke in DFW when I was 22 years old. I introduced myself and thanked him for being a great TV dad for a young man that grew up without a father. I met the late Gary Coleman at an ExxonMobil just outside of Houston Intercontinental Airport. He and his driver need directions and I was happy to help. My first cousin Donnie Dacus is the star in the American Icon movie "HAIR" and lead guitar in the group "Chicagp" |

I did the Pocono Raceway Driving experience. I had to take a class about racing on the track, after class they took 8 of us in a Ford extended window van around the track to show us how to take the corners and banks. The driver told us it is almost impossible to hit the wall. We were doing 115 mph in the van with 9 people. You got 3 laps as passenger with a real driver at 195 mph and 10 laps at 165 mph by yourself in retired race car. Real driver led the group so you couldn't go faster, which was a bummer. In class they told us you should never need the brakes, but I was trying to go faster, so I was riding the brakes all the way. I was tempted to pass the leader, they said if you did you would be removed, but on the last two laps it was tempting. |

I used to drive demolition derby. My first car was a 1964 Chrysler New Yorker with push button. They would not let you remove the stock gas tank and put a tank inside the car at this event and my gas tank was dragging the ground while I drove through fire. I didn't know it was dragging the ground. LOL I started putting a chicken on the roof of my cars. It was one of those large plastic lawn ornaments. I talked to one of the guys years later that drove with me and he told me everyone was trying to knock the chicken off the car. LOL |

In 2006 I was on a land speed record project to attain the diesel record for JCB. We acheived the record after Bonneville speed week. The car was the Dieselmax twin engined streamliner. The object was JCB wanted to get into the American market with their new 444 Diesel engine. The very next day the crew chief of the project, ( I was the composite bodywork guy) grabbed me and another two guys and said we were to drive back over to the salt as we have a job to do. Our job was JCB wanted to make a dvd and needed moving shots of the car on the measured black line on the salt. We took turns all day long to sit in the car, with Andy Greens helmet on ( he of outright land speed record fame) the canopy was closed and we were pushed by a tractor to 40 mph. The tractor pulled off and you rolled along to a stop at which point I jumped out and someone else jumped in. We all took turns and milked this for as long as we could! To think of sitting in the car we built, that not 24 hours before, gained the outright speed record, wearing the same helmet on the same track, just brilliant! That diesel record still stands today. |

I got to spend a month with Carroll Shelby at Indy. I was introduced to George Poteet, the Bonneville speed racer as Santa Claus. I've been blessed with many, many opportunities. Oh here's one, I was on the Prowler Team from before it was an approved program and was sitting across the table from The company President in the meeting where we made the decision to end production with 300 deep candy red cars. |

Now that is what I was hoping for with this thread. Some INTERESTING stuff. By the way, I gave bogus directions to Garrett Morris (SNL) and another SNL star at the concert. I have several witnesses who can verify it. THE FASTEST INDIAN is about the Salt Lake Salt Flats. Fantastic movie. |

An addition to my last post. In 2006 on the JCB event, our base was on Wendover airfield. We were in an old run down hanger with broken windows etc. the streamliner was on the right of the building. The historic significance of this was Donald Campbell did his attempts in the same position, same building. We were there for 4 weeks. Week 2 a bearded guy arrives and sets up his area next to mine. We got chatting. He had a crate arrive with a brand new Microlight in kit form. He built the craft. I asked if there was a chance of a flight. He said sure, come with me on day one. It was great to tell my boss to drive over to the salt without me as I’ll be flying over. Day one, did the flight, just fabulous. Did a very low fly past over the vehicle convoy carrying the streamliner to the salt flats. Just before we got the record runs, the pilot came to me with a problem, a bolt had come off the engine and hit the composite propeller taking a chunk out of it. He asked if I could repair it. I obliged but told him it would cost him another flight! He duly obliged and I did the last flight from the salt back to base. He thought the repair must be ok as I wanted to fly after the fact. Unless he thought I was crazy? Turned out the pilot was a chap called Richard Meredith Hardy. The first man to fly a microlight over Mount Everest….! I think I know who was the crazy one… |

In 2008 I was with a team from the U.K who were campaigning an Aston Martin GT car. The team were called Drayson Barwell. The series was the American Le Man series held all over the states. I have many memories of the events. Two events stick in my mind. One was the car was prone to catching fire in the exhaust area. I was part of the 3 man refuelling crew. We had jumped over the wall and waiting for the car to come in. We were all watching the car on the big screen and yes, it was on fire. Normally on a pit stop the first job is refuel and then tyres. I recall an unknown voice in my helmet saying, do we refuel first or do we put the fire out first! I remember us all looking at each other thinking, who on earth said that! Another time, the car was sat in the pit lane, door open ready to go but with no driver. The session had started. The reason why our driver was ‘busy elsewhere’ turned out to be that as he, Lord Drayson, current defence minister for the U.K. government, was on the phone to the then U.K. prime minister Gordon Brown! We missed 15 minutes of that session…. This message has been edited by Dave Haggas on 12-29-2022 at 09:46 AM |
