I'm going to be having new lower ball joints installed on my '99 Prowler w/24K miles. Since front wheels are going to be off, I'm going to have new VSLs installed at the same time and want to put on some ceramic brake pads (front). QUESTION: At 24K miles, are the rotors probably good for a few thousand more miles or should they be "machined" at the same time I have the new pads installed? Brakes work well at this time, no wobble, no jerking, no noise. Thanks. |

The rotors should be fine. I would just run my hand over them to feel if they were still good. |

Turning (machining) down or replacing brake rotors or brake drums should almost ALWAYS be done when installing new pads IMO.....Remember; these two parts are going to be "grinding" against each other to bring you to a safe stop and having BOTH surfaces perfectly smooth will make them both last longer and work most efficiently. But before you have your rotors or drums "machined" check the price of simply replacing them. The amount of time involved in resurfacing brakes and rotors causes the price, in many cases, to be higher than simply replacing them with a new set from China. And if you are paying a mechanic, think of this...The TIME (labor cost) involved in replacing the rotor is practically ZERO while he's already changing your pads versus paying him as a separate job done later...Git-er-done while he's in there! Brake pads have a life expectancy of about 25-30,000 miles and brake rotors have a life expectancy of 30-70,000 miles depending on how you drive. (DOWNSHIFT DAMN IT!....It makes driving more fun and it saves on the brakes) SPECIAL NOTE TO "GARAGE QUEEN" OWNERS: Since your Prowler rarely sees highways and almost NEVER moves, your brakes should out-live you thereby leaving them in great shape for when your widow and her boyfriend takes it on lots of great cruises after your boring azz is dead and gone BTW....If you don't do anything with your rotors or drums while replacing your pads ONLY and then, when they prematurely wear out or fail and you take them back to your mechanic expecting him to "make it right" guess what he's gonna say? Replacement or machining should be determined by a measurement if there are no other indicators of wear. But the front rotors are so cheap these days and given that the prowler brakes aren't the greatest to begin with, I would replace them. The price of machining can be almost as much as new rotors. Chrysler mini van rotors fit the Prowler. I would not replace them if they have a nice smooth surface unless you are interested in drilled and slotted rotors which is an option you may not have though of. In my opinion this option is nearly cosmetic and look cool. |

Dave. I had rotors turned at Napa Auto in Sonora last year for $15 each. |

Add some pizzazz to the front $160 for kit with ceramic pads.

A couple of years ago, I replaced my stock rotors with drilled and slotted rotors and installed ceramic pads. Quincy is right, the car does stop better. |

Turning rotors removes thickness. Thickness dissipates heat. Heat warps rotors. Warped rotors creates shimmy in the steering wheel when brakes applied. Another note...some rotors that may not be prowler specific may rust ...due to the open wheel/suspension design , a rusty rotor is not appealing.... The above “evolution” do not rust. If they are not warped, leave them alone. |

Always turn or replace rotors when installing new pads. ------------------ |

FYI,,, When in doubt.... the front brake rotors are the same as on many Plymouth/Chrysler/and Dodge minivans,,, so they are plentiful and really inexpensive to just buy new ones. |

I replaced the front rotors with slotted only - not drilled. It was purely a cosmetic decision. I also installed ceramic pads. I agree, the car does stop more efficiently. And it looks dang good! |
