ROCKVILLE, Utah – A man suffered critical injuries and a woman was taken to a hospital after a nearly head-on collision that occurred on State Route 9 Sunday afternoon. According to information from the Utah Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at 3:48 p.m. on State Route 9 at mile post 22, which is near the town of Rockville. The highway is only two lanes in that area and is marked as a passing zone. An eastbound Ford Taurus driven by Conlan Finnerty, 16 of Hurricane, began to pass an RV near mile post 22.5. A Plymouth Prowler being driven by Timothy Chard, 51 of Washington City, was traveling westbound in the same location. Finnerty braked hard and tried to swerve to avoid the crash, “but the two vehicles struck nearly head-on”, according to UHP. Chard was critically injured and was taken by medical helicopter to Dixie Regional Medical Center. His passenger, 34-year-old Erin Chard of Washington City, was taken to DRMC by ambulance. The extent of her injuries were unclear. The driver of the Ford and his three passengers were treated at the scene and released. The cause of the crash is under investigation, but officials said at this time they do not suspect impairment was a factor. |

Front bumpers on would have made no difference in that crash. Have you looked closely at the front bumpers? They are quite flimsy and only good in a low speed impact under five miles per hour. JMO. |

Wow, it looks like the Prowler made it all the way off the roadway onto the shoulder and still took a pretty hard hit on the driver's side (and then spun out?). All the debris is on the shoulder, nothing in the travel lane. I hope everyone can say a prayer or two for those guys. |

Sad, but it is a case is stupidity, 16 year old driver with 3 buddies, distracted driver, or impared how ever you want to look at it. He clearly didn't have good sight of the road ahead before he decided to pass the RV The road was wide enough had he used his head should have been able to made it a 3 lane but he lost control because he panicked It is a shame that the accident happened. Hope the Prowler owner and passenger is ok. |

In September 2008, he was transferred to the St. George, UT ICE Office as a Senior Special Agent, where he is assigned to Washington County Drug/Gang Task Force. During his 9 years in Utah, he became the President for FLEOA Chapter 74 and has remained the Chapter President for the last 7 years. I agree with Wildcat ...... a 16 year old dummy, first year license holder, with little or no road experience, making a really serious decision error. As he was in the wrong (the Prowler has the right of way), I seriously hope a civil law suit is launched by the family. |

This is an issue with someone not paying attention to a valid passing situation, that being the 16 year old, and or the RV not pulling over possibly to let people get by. I have been on the road many times where a motor home, or some other form of camper, is driving like 55 or 60 and not having the courtesy to pull over once in a while to let other people pass. |

Did you happen to notice the entire wheel assembly laying on the roadway? If you kick your front bumper with your foot, really hard, on the outer edge, you will probably break it loose. It won't come off the car, but it will need to be replaced, probably. Just sayin. |

The only thing I see the bumper doing that would be beneficial would be to trigger the airbag a millisecond sooner which could make all the difference. As we cannot tell from those views whether it went off or not, it doesn’t appear there is any damage in the area of the sensors. If the impact sheared off the wheel but did little to slow the vehicle it is entirely possible that the airbag did not activate. The point of impact is clearly in the Prowlers travel lane. Wonder why he didn’t move right to the shoulder to avoid the oncoming car. The pavement is certainly wide enough. Hope he recovers. How does everyone KNOW that the motor home was travelling BELOW the speed limit? The kid might have been going 80 MPH and came up on the motor home suddenly. If he pulled out to pass way too late the Prowler might not have had but a second to react. It is the kid's fault 100 %, either way. Hopefully Tim Chard will be able to tell them what happened. |

A lot of damage on the Taurus. It must have almost T boned the prowler. |
